Issues in British-American relations: the Falklands War

Diploma thesis Issues in British-American relations: the Falklands War deals with the special relationship between Great Britain and the United States and analyses in particular relations between their leading political figures - American president Ronald Raegan and British prime minister Margaret Thatcher. The aim of the thesis is to find out whether the special relationship played any role during the Falkland Islands War in 1982. The theoretical part is focused on the search for a definition of the term special relationship. I found different definitions of special relationship, but no universal one exists. The thesis operates with the definition of John Dumbrell, who says that the special relationship existed, specifically during the Cold War. The analytical part examines British-American cooperation during the above-mentioned conflict and the role of the United States as a mediator. The diploma thesis concludes that the special relationship played a role in the Falkland Islands War. It was reflected in the two countries' military, satellite, and intelligence cooperation. Falklands or Malvins? Czech view on teh War between British and Angentina governments

The main goal of this thesis is to explore the stance of former Czechoslovak media towards the Falkland and Malvina Islands war. The first part is focused predominantly on the conflict itself, historical claims of both countries, and their argumentation. Further, the steps of the United Nations General Assembly are listed, as an important part of media coverage at that time. The practical section represents the main pillar of this thesis. It investigates former printed media and their position regarding both sides of the conflict. Before the text analysis itself, censorship and other practices of former institutions are presented. These institutions were responsible for the stance of the media to be consistent with the Communist party ideologies. In the analysis, the daily press represented by Rudé právo, Svobodné slovo, popular science magazine 100+1 zahraniční zajímavost, magazine Nový Orient published by Academy of Sciences of the Czech republic and exile literature Demokracie v Exilu a Západ. The last military dictatorship in Argentina in the years 1976 - 1983

(in English) The thesis discusses the government of the most recent military dictatorship in Argentina in 1976-1983. The first chapter defines the basic concepts that are important for the proper interpretation of the work and provides a brief overview of the political developments and the situation in the country in the 20th century that preceded the last military coup. The main part of the thesis gives the characteristics of the period 1976-1983, that is rise to power, action and fall of the military dictatorship with a reflection of the development of relations with the USA and Argentina in this period of time. It also delivers a view of the Falklands War, which accelerated the transition from dictatorship to democracy in Argentina. The work also includes insight into the present in the context of the impact of the seven-year military junta to Argentine society as well as the question of the future of the islands, in the context of the continuing recognition of Argentina's claims to sovereignty over the islands.

The main objective of the thesis is to analyze the Malvinas war. The theoretical part deals with international conflicts in general. It classifies the conflicts, its stages and presents conception of preventive diplomacy. The practical part deals with the Malvinas war itself. It presents Argentinian and British point of view and explains historical contexts. It seeks to provide coherent arguments of Argentinian rights and argues with Brtish view-point eventhough the Malvinas are currently under British supremacy.
