Literární noviny, Literární listy and Listy (1966-1969): The story of the demise of the Union of Czechoslovak Writers' weekly
Čáp, Johan ; Čeňková, Jana (advisor) ; Končelík, Jakub (referee)
This bachelor's thesis aims to describe the functioning of a weekly Literarni noviny, one of the most influential periodicals in Czechoslovakia in the 1960s. Between 1966 and 1969, the publication of this cultural magazine was stopped twice and Literarni noviny was renamed twice - first to Literární listy and later to Listy. In the theoretical part, the thesis deals with the phenomenon of cultural magazines in the 1960s, the functioning of censorship in Czechoslovakia, and important topics with which the periodical influenced contemporary discourse. In the practical part, using qualitative methods - historical-comparative analysis and text analysis - summarizes the content and graphic changes of the periodical in individual stages, and puts everything in context with other cultural periodicals of the time. Part of the bachelor's thesis is also an oral history interview with Vladimír Karfík, then editor-in-chief of the cultural section of Literarni noviny. The conclusion of the thesis shows the periodical changed structurally relatively little between 1966 and 1969 and the changes in content corresponded to the progress of media liberalization - the tightening or loosening of censorship. The unique interview with Vladimír Karfík complements some details that do not appear in the literature and is a...
Literární noviny in the 90s of the 20th century and Ludvík Vaculík
Havlíková, Anna ; Čeňková, Jana (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee)
This master's thesis deals with the cultural-political weekly magazine Literární noviny. The first part is dedicated to the forms of the Literární noviny from 1927, when the magazine emerged, to 1969, when it ceased to be published for twenty-one years. The main focus of the thesis is its second part, which explores the life of the Literární noviny in the 90s. On 5 April, 1990 the weekly was renewed as an appendix of the Lidové noviny, and two years later it became an independent magazine. Its chief editor was Vladimír Karfík until 1999. I did an interview with Vladimír Karfík, which is attachment of this thesis. I concentrated on the weekly's editorial composition, especially on the sections and its thematic structure, but also on the social and cultural context of the 90s. The main research method used for analysing the composition of the thematic structure is quantitative content analysis. The research questions are related both to the topics that formed the content of the Literární noviny in the 90s, and their transformation within that decade. I also used the elements of qualitative analysis, to compare the transformation of the front page of the weekly magazine in the above mentioned period. The third section is dedicated to the feuilletons of Ludvík Vaculík. I focused on author's feuilletons...
Milan Kundera's The Joke supervised. Critical reception of the novel in the context of its release and today.
Batistová, Anna ; Čeňková, Jana (advisor) ; Jonáková, Anna (referee)
Thesis "Milan Kundera's 'The Joke' supervised. Critical reception of the novel in the context of its release and today" deals with critical reflection of the novel 'The Joke' in the period from the end of the 1960's up to current reviews. The author dedicates first chapters to the cultural and political background of the release. The core of the thesis focuses mostly on critical reception of the novel, which is divided into three historical periods. In the first part of the critical historical analysis and qualitative analysis, the author examines critical acceptance of the novel in the aftermath of its release (1967-1969), in the Czechoslovakian and exiled journals and literary magazines in particular. The second part considers critical reaction to the novel throughout 1970's and 80's, and stresses outcomes of the reception in the sixties, official normalized critical reviews and the acceptance in the exile and samizdat literature as well. Finally, the last part of the thesis offers contemporary critical response to 'The Joke', analyzed on the basis of Czech journals, literary magazines and newly emergent Kundera's monographs and on the basis of French critical reception of the Milan Kundera's collected work in the prestigious La Pléiade Gallimard edition. Summarizing critical reception in each...
What is criticism, what is not and what use is in the world. Typology of Czech literary criticism in the years 1995-2008
Proroková, Marie ; Kubíček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Peterka, Josef (referee)
This bachelor's thesis describes the development of literary criticism conception and it's earlier typology. The thesis deals with the difference between literary criticism and reviews - how these dissimilarities appear in theory and in practice. The applicable typology for present Czech literary criticism has been suggested in this thesis. The typology mentioned divides literary criticism into two main types: text-oriented criticism and context-oriented criticism. It discusses the development of value conception and what is a value even nowadays. For contemporary literary critics it is originality, credibility of the work and composition. It provides information on how criticism is presented by individual Czech periodicals including Host, A2, Revolver Revue, Tvar, Souvislosti and Literární noviny.

Media content analysis of the IV Congress of the Association of Czechoslovak Writers in daily newspapers and culture press
Štěpánová, Petra ; Čeňková, Jana (advisor) ; Jonáková, Anna (referee)
The subject of this bachelor thesis is media content analysis of the IVth Congress of the Association of Czechoslovak Writers, which took place in 1967. Analysed press is: daily newspapers Rudé právo ("The Red Law") and Práce ("The Work") and culture press Literární noviny ("The Literary Newspapers") and Literární listy ("The Literary Pages"). This thesis contains not only the mentions about the IVth congress of writers but also the following events as regards the writers association because it had been tightly connected to this IVth congress. The thesis tries to compare the image created by the analysed media in 1967/1968 with the historic reality. There were two main aims of this thesis. Firstly, to learn if the analysed media reported objectively about the IVth Congress of the Association of Czechoslovak Writers, secondly, to find if there is a difference as concerns the freedom of press between the years 1967 and 1968. During the analysis it became obvious that all those media published incomplete and vague news about the IVth congress until the end of the year 1967. From January 1968 on, daily newspapers were allowed to inform about the IVth congress much more objectively, but after six months and mainly in the form of comments. That is against the main characteristics of daily press - to...
