Space-time breakdown in Julio Cortázar's fantastic tales

As the title may reveal, my work will focus on space-time breakdowns in Julio Cortázar's (1914-1984) oeuvre. This Argentinian writer's work is centered mainly on the fantastic genre, specifically on tales. He is one of the most important representants of this genre in the zone of Río de la Plata, although for the most of his life he lived in Paris, where also many of his works were written. With help of other literary critics and theorists, I will try to define the space-time breakdowns in his creation. Tzvetan Todorov in his The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Literary Genre, distinguishes between three main categories: the strange, the fantastic and the marvelous. Another critic, Ana María Barrenechea, in her a little bit more vital theory divides the fantastic into these three categories: the natural, the unnatural and the mixture of both. As an example I will use four of Cortázar's tales. On those, I will apply the mentioned theories, nevertheless I will also point out the possible lack of clarity and obsolescence in them and will try to offer some new alternative solutions. Translation of Julio Cortazar into Czech language. Pioneers, suppressed and recent translators: Cortazar's legacy still alive.

(in English): Julio Cortázar is considered as one of the greatest literary figures of Argentina and Latin America of the last century and to him is dedicated this master's thesis, focused on translation of his work into Czech language. First part of the thesis is theoretically based, dealing with biography, creation and style of the author and then moves to figures of his Czech translators, problems arising from translation and perception and development of translations of Cortázar's works in Czech environment. The second part is practically oriented, pursuing the analysis and comparison of translations of specific works - two translations of a story The Pursuer by translators Kamil Uhlíř and Jan Machej and two versions of translation of a novel Hopscotch by Vladimír Medek.

Absurd reality through strokes and letters: interpretation of art in Julio Cortázar's works

(in English): Argentine writer Julio Cortázar in his collection of short stories named Historias de cronopios y de famas described with his original attitude and unique sense of humour many topics of mere life in very special context and in a very special way. One of these unexpectable views is slightly absurd interpretation of three artworks in a short story "Instrucciones para entender tres pinturas famosas". I am going to focus on comparison of existing scientific works describing the mentioned artworks and the point of view of Julio Cortázar. I would like to look further for the meaning of slightly surrealistic grotesque play and to underline the caricature of the scientific discipline trying to systematize such an open and changeable field as art. Subsequently I am going to have a look at his works in general. The significant imagination is making us wonder if the writer had been inspired by some concrete painting or he could have stimulate with his extraordinary ideas some artist in creation of a work of art. To illustrate this idea I am going to give several examples of paintings that are connected with the Cortázar's text in certain ways and compare the circumstances of the creation.
