Ondřej Suchý: portrayal of a journalist
Hedbávný, Marek ; Malý, Radek (advisor) ; Novotný, David Jan (referee)
This diploma thesis summarises the life and work of Ondřej Suchý with an emphasis on his journalistic activities in the press, radio and television. One of Suchý's projects in the Czechoslovakian TV was being a TV presenter in Kavárnička dříve narozených (1985-1995). He worked intermittently in the Czech radio from 1962 to 2018, presenting programmes such as Padesátník (1992-2008) or Nostalgické muzeum zábavy (1997-2008). As for the printed media, his name is mainly connected with a children's magazine Sedmička (1968-1971) and with an insert of Svobodné Slovo, Kvítko. This thesis also marginally covers Suchý's artistic work: he used to make a living as a caricaturist (he was known for his cartoon jokes about mice) or as a music lyric writer (he co-operated with Karel Černoch, Hana Hegerová or Dagmar Patrasová). He has also published over 50 books, mainly nonfiction; he focuses on biographies of famous actors, actresses, comedians and singers from the 1930s to 1960s. Further chapters cover his personal and professional relationship with his older brother Jiří, a critical assessment of his work by means of periodic reviews and an analysis of Suchý's journalistic methods. There is also an attachement which includes a thematic photo gallery.
Religious Allusions in Non-religious Texts in Czech Popular Music: “God has covered His face”
Opekar, Aleš
The paper deals with an abundance of sacred, mostly Christian symbolism in the texts of Czech popular music, whose contents are not religious. Christian symbols are used as a common supply of words, similar to everyday speech, and sometimes they are placed in layers of sequences, such as prayers for love and art. Sometimes they are used as poetic devices that enhance aesthetic effects. The core of the paper is an analysis of specific but mutually different approaches of three Czech singer-songwriters of three generations: Jiří Suchý, Svatopluk Karásek, and Beata Bocek. While Suchý works with religious rhetoric rarely but with great artistic effect, Karásek makes it a natural part of his songs, which in his day was a relevant extension into social and political topics. Beata Bocek’s topics do not match any expected style: she uses common language for singing about sacred matters, and sings about general human matters in soulful language.
Resisting Temptation:Mephistophelian seduction in Czech Theatrical Drama of the 1970's and 1980's
Imlaufová, Markéta ; Smrčka, Jiří (advisor) ; Kubíček, Tomáš (referee)
This master thesis deals with the topic of temptation in three Czech Theatrical Dramas of the 1970's and 1980's, inspired by the legend of Faust. These dramatic works represent different model approaches of dealing with such a topic. Thesis focuses on the principle of evil and its functioning. The temptation by Devil is therefore defined as Mephistophelian seduction, which occurs in drama plays selected as a subject of this thesis. The thesis analyzes and describes Mephistophelian seduction and its realization in theatrical dramas. Thesis elaborates the mechanism of evil principle and examines how the main protagonists are influenced in their acting and behaviour by this power. This thesis brings the power of evil into the wider context of "higher power" and describes relations between the power of evil and totalitarian power. On this base the historical and political context of the lives of the authors is considered as an important element. Based on comparison of all these aspects the principle of Mephistophelian seduction is reflected within its existential dimension. KEYWORDS Temptation, Devil, Mephistophelian seduction, protagonist, evil principle, drama, Faust, Mephistopheles, Václav Havel, Oldřich Daněk, Jiří Suchý
Two poetics of author's theatre: Semafor and Studio Ypsilon
Baloušová, Lucie ; Smrčka, Jiří (advisor) ; Píšová, Ina (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on small scene theaters which developed in the 1950s and represent a unique generational movement within the Czech cultural framework. This final project aims to describe the distinctive poetics of two of the Czech small theaters - the theatre Semafor and Studio Ypsilon. The description itself is based on the analysis of the original dramatic texts produced by their main representatives, Jiří Suchý and Jan Schmid. The thesis opens with the domain of the small scene theaters as such, its definition and characteristics. In order to provide a comprehensive perspective on the matter, the authorial theater and its specifics is further discussed. The main part of this thesis then concentrates on the origins of the two theaters, their profiles during the period of 1960s to 1990s and, eventually, their present form. Finally, despite the different conditions of existence of the two theaters, and the cultural, historical and political context, a comparison of the two poetics is proposed. KEYWORDS small scene theatre, author's theatre, theatre Semafor, Studio Ypsilon, Jiří Suchý, Jan Schmid, drama, dramatic text, poetics
Conceptualization of Music in the Lyrics by Jiří Suchý
Císlerová, Anna ; Vaňková, Irena (advisor) ; Lehečková, Eva (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with conceptualization of music in the lyrics by Jiří Suchý in the context of conceptualization of music in the Czech language. The thesis employs the methods of cognitive linguistics, mainly the linguistic view of the world and the conceptual metaphor theory. The goal of this thesis is to reconstruct the linguistic view of music and to identify conceptual metaphors that are used in the language material. The sources of the language data are firstly monolingual, phraseological and other dictionaries of the Czech language and secondly lyrics by Jiří Suchý. The research has shown that the conceptualizations of music based on the dictionary material occur also in the lyrics. However, the lyrics include more types of conceptualizations than can be found in the data from dictionaries. From this material it is also not possible to define, for example, the connotations of the word blues - the connotations were only found by looking at the lyrics. As the greatest contribution of this thesis we consider the discovery of parallel conceptual metaphors of music and language.
