The media stereotyping of Czechs in the case of the National library

My bachelor thesis "Media stereotyping of the Czechs in the case of the National Library" explores stereotypes of Czech national identity / Czechness in the contents of Czech printed media. The media chosen are the weekly magazines Respekt and Reflex . The examined period is from 2nd March 2007 to 2nd June 2007, which means three months after the announcement of the winner of international architectural competition for the new National Library building at Letna. Qualitative content analysis method is used to define stereotypes based on the material examined. It is conceived as an interpretation of a media text. The analysis studies and interprets references found to the Czechs / the nation /the society. It examines what identity and character the chosen titles assign to the Czech nation. After that, the thesis examines the similarities and differences between the two titles. The research part is preceded by a theoretical part and a methodological part. The theoretical part explains the concepts of national identity and national character and stereotyping and describes the affair of the National Library from the point of view describing the historical problems of its premises, the course of the architectural competition and the final form of the design by Jan Kaplický. These doctoral theses deal with relationship between the architecture and the public, and a clarification of a role massmedia play in it. The particular affair related to the project of a new building for the National Library in Prague by architect Jan Kaplicky was choosed as a base of this work. Plans were designed in 2006 and 2007. The first chapter contains detailed descrioption of the affair and analysis of gathered material. It explores courses and ways mass media reflect choosen affair. And it also deduces conclusions relevant for the whole sphere of a mass media frame in which architecture operates. Implementation of a culture policy project of new building of National Library of the Czech Republic and its failure

The thesis focuses on a chosen public policy issue, as a part of cultural policy, namely on an implementation of a project of new building of National library of Czech Republic in Prague, arisen from an international architecture competition. This thesis has a form of a case study paper and investigates all relevant events and circumstances of the case, as well as interested stakeholders. They were characterised to disclose their possible role in implementation deficit, which occurred in the case. The aim of this thesis is to provide complex insight into the case, to find the point of implementation deficit in the process and to identify the values and hidden motivations of stakeholders. The thesis is divided into three chapters. In the first chapter, there is a summary of theoretical knowledge about public policy and implementation process and its analysis. The author describes three possible approaches to implementation analysis. Second chapter focuses on culture and its specifics, in the forming of culture policy. The third chapter is a complete analysis of the case, including event analysis and stakeholder analysis. In the conclusion, the author sums up the identified causes of implementation deficit and gives recommendations for possible future implementation of a similar cultural project.
