Personality and Work of Jan Nepomuk Polasek (1873-1956)

This dissertation thesis focuses on the person and work of Jan Nepomuk Polášek (1873-1956), a distinguished regional composer and music teacher who spent a significant part of his life in Valašské Meziříčí. Throughout his life, Polášek devoted himself to creative work, which was, to a varying degree, inspired by the Moravian Wallachian folk culture. The thesis outlines the important phases of Polášek's life including his childhood and school days, first contact with music teaching, his studies at the Brno Organ School, and, last but not least, his relationship with Leoš Janáček. The Biographical part of the thesis ends with a subchapter devoted to Polášek's work in Valašské Meziříčí until his death in 1956. Polášek's body of work includes his compositions, music-related organisational activities, music teaching, publishing and folk song collecting. The aforementioned activities are presented and analysed in the remaining chapters of this dissertation thesis. The final chapter analyses selected instrumental, vocal-instrumental and vocal compositions of Polášek's, based on which it illustrates the key elements of his creative work. Folk songs from the thematic viewpoint

The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to provide a detailed overview about topics which occur in Czech folk songs. The basis for constructing conclusions is the analysis of songs present in Jindřich's reworked edition of a collection Nápěvy písní národních v Čechách, authored by a poet Karel Jaromír Erben and a composer J. P. Michael Martinovský. The practical part is preceded by a theoretical part, in which basic findings about the problematics of folk culture, more closely focusing on folk song, are formulated.

Sounds of Nature or Econarratology through the Folk Songs

The topic of the thesis is econaratology in conjunction with folk songs, which is subject to the laws of nature and forms a sort of mind set of the of nature life. Singing songs is an integral part of the narrative approach, narrative is complemented by tones and melodies for better memorization. The theoretical part defines the terms: narration, econaratology and folk song. I am interested in what place there the narrative approach in environmental education takes and what are its benefits. I allude to the use of narrative and folk songs as a means of education in practice. The aim of the thesis is based on research findings to determine the extent to which children are able to follow recordings of sound recording recognize and identify vocalizations of domestic or wild animals and industrial sounds of outside world. The research findings are utilized qualitative research, supplemented in some parts of quantitative research. The Phenomenon of Latvian Song Festivals

This work deals with Latvian Song Festivals as an important phenomenon in Latvian history which started in Latvia in 1873. Their basis lays in choir singing developed in Latvia on a massive scale in 2nd half of 19th century. The festivals probably continued old tradition of singing - so-called teicamās dziesmas which had a similar structure as modern choirs. The development of choir singing is connected with Herrnhuterian schools and pedagogical colleges. The personality playing an important role in this process was a chief pedagogue in Valmiera Jānis Cimze whose collection Dziesmu rota launched a discussion about the future of Latvian culture from the point of view of national identity. Although the structure of Latvian Song Festivals was taken over from the Baltic Germans the idea of national identity has been involved since the beginning. Forming of Latvian national identity was in its beginnings influenced by J. G. Herder's philosophy and his idea of Volkslied and Volksgeist and it is closely connected with Latvian folk songs. It corresponds with Latvian self-determination as the nation of singers.
