The first capital of the United states of America? The political and social development of Philadelphia in the second half of the 18th century and its importance to the establishement of the United states of America

This bachelor thesis is an analysis of the political and social development of Philadelphia during the 18th century, primarily in the course of the American War of Independence and shortly after its end. Particular attention is paid to the participation of local society in public affairs and Benjamin Franklin's influence on society and his contribution to the field of culture and education. Also a status and importance of the city during the war and its impact on the residents is taken into consideration. I concentrate on the First and Second Continental Congress placed in Philadelphia and the causes that preceded the first meeting. At the conclusion attention is paid to postwar Philadelphia and its status of temporary capital city and I try to answer the question whether the city can be considered as the first capital of the emerging United States of America.
