The topic of this thesis is the prospects of development of Norway and Sweden within regional integrations. By 'prospects' is meant historical background, current position and an outline of the future development within the integrations. By 'regional integrations' in this work I mean such regional integrations either of which Norway and Sweden are members, or those they intended to join. Those are European Union (or earlier European Communities), European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and closely linked European Economic Area and European monetary union. The thesis aims at illustrating different approaches towards European regional integration on the example of Norway and Sweden, and evaluate prospects of their development. I would also like to assess their position within them. The first chapter gives the basic characteristics of the countries. The second chapter deals with the relations to the regional integrations and the positions within them. The last chapter outlines the future development of the two Scandinavian countries from both the country's and the integration's points of view.

In the context of continued institutional and economic crisis of the European Union, the new ways of international cooperation are sought. The thesis finds way out for European integration in an intergovernmental organization called European Free Trade Association. Based on a comparison of selected macroeconomic variables, economic freedom and governance structures, it shows that the organization is current viable alternative to the European Union. Research of the institutional structure confirms that the members of this association have better economic results in the long run, simultaneously they are maintaining national sovereignty and personal freedoms of its citizens.
