This bachelor thesis deals with the role of Ukrainian far-right forces during the Euromaidan and in the post-revolutionary period. The thesis is conceived as a case study that relies mainly on qualitative research methods based on academic literature accompanied by non-academic sources. The first chapter includes an introduction to the topic and provides research questions and thesis structure along with methodology and literature review. In the second chapter, the historical and ideological genesis of the Ukrainian far-right will be outlined along with a presentation of current far-right representatives including the most famous ones. In further parts, the activities and role of far-right forces during Euromaidan, their engagement during the war in the Donbas region, and their political and civil activities during the post-revolutionary period. The time frame of this thesis is limited to the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation in February 2022. At the end of each part, research questions will be answered based on the findings of the respective part. Those answers are then summed up in a conclusion. Internal divisions and problems of Ukrainian Orthodoxy in relation to the events of Euromaidan
Jungwirthová, Sára ; Zilynskyj, Bohdan (advisor) ; Kolenovská, Daniela (referee)
This thesis focuses on the reaction of the three main Ukrainian Orthodox Churches (Ukrainian Orthodox Church - Moscow Patriarchate, Ukrainian Orthodox Church - Kyivan Patriarchate and Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church) to the revolutionary events in the country that began at the end of the year 2013. I try to explain the role of churches in this social turmoil while following their changing attitudes and political influence. Their complex inner relations will also be part of this study. Besides that I analyse the way the concept of Russian world is implemented in Russia's foreign policy regarding Ukraine and how this creates inner tensions in the UOC-MP. I also mention the rise of religiously motivated violence which is a direct consequence of the Russian aggression towards Ukrainian territorial integrity. Due to the topicality of the subject, I relied not only on classical sources, but also on many professional religious studies magazines covering the events of Maidan.
Russian armed intervention in eastern Ukraine 2014-2015: evolution of tactical approach
Chalupník, Alexej ; Šír, Jan (advisor) ; Svoboda, Karel (referee)
The thesis deals with the Russian intervention in eastern Ukraine, in the period between February 2014 and the first half of 2015, with the focus on the Russian tactical approach in the operation. A chapter describing the context of the pre-war Ukraine, focusing on Russian- Ukrainian relationship and a brief introduction to the events prior to the war in eastern Ukraine, precedes the main body of the case study. I deem this chapter necessary for reader's understanding of the topic. This chapter is followed by the presentation of Russian strategic goals regarding Ukraine, which Russia aimed to achieve using its tactics in Donbas. This helps to determine the relative success of the Russian operation and the chosen tactics in the final conclusion of the paper. The main chapter describes the Russian tactical approach, which divides both the conflict and the structure of the chapter into particular phases. Transition of Russian tactical approach from the use of political warfare tools to the means of irregular warfare and subsequently to hybrid warfare, followed by a conventional, invasive attack by Russian regular troops, is depicted in the main chapter. The case study concludes that the Russian tactical approach in eastern Ukraine was poorly chosen or executed. The very limited achievement of...
Lustration laws in Ukraine: Between post-communism and post-authoritarianism
Srb, Jáchym ; Šír, Jan (advisor) ; Svoboda, Karel (referee)
The master thesis examines the phenomenon of lustration laws in Ukraine as a legal measure of transitional justice. It maps the history of unsuccessful attempts to adopt lustration laws from the independence in 1991 until the Euromaidan revolution in winter 2014. It then analyses the two lustration laws adopted in 2014 and their implementation between years 2014 and 2017. Finally it analyses the legal review that the laws have faced or are likely to face in the future. It comes to a conclusion that Ukrainian laws were not adopted after the independence in 1991 because of structural reasons and after the Orange Revolution in 2004 due to a lack of political will. In the second part, the thesis concludes that Ukrainian lustration laws adopted after Euromaidan were some of the most extensive ones in the region of post-communist Europe. Nevertheless, their implementation fell short of meeting most of their goals. In the third part, the thesis concludes that the laws might be spared constitutional review, but they are likely to face a negative scrutiny before the European Court of Human Rights.
