Taming Russian oligarchs:the case of Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Yukos
Matoušek, David ; Šír, Jan (advisor) ; Svoboda, Karel (referee)
The Russian oil industry has long been one of the most important and valuable oil markets in the world. During the Soviet era, the oil industry was subject to strict state control, but the privatization of industry in the 1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union led the industrial companies to be handed over to several businessmen who later became Russian oligarchs. In my work I examine the rise and fall of the most prominent member of the early group of oligarchs - Mikhail Khodorkovsky.
Lifting the crude oil export ban and its impact on US energy sector
Vopěnková, Andrea ; Stuchlíková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Neumann, Pavel (referee)
US Congress lifted oil ban in December 2015 after 40 years of its existence. The ban was lifted even though US is currently not net energy exporter or energy independent state. The aim of this theses is to state under which circumstances US approved the oil ban in 1975. Furthermore, the aim is to analyse the impact of current legislation and non-regulated crude oil export on US energy sector. The first chapter defines a sanction, its types, how we can measure its effectivenes and describes UN sanctions legislation process. The second chapter describes the Arab embargo from 1973 and last chapter analyses the impact of a new legislation on energy producers and refiners.
Systemic Risk in the European Financial and Energy Sector: Dynamic Factor Copula Approach
Nevrla, Matěj ; Baruník, Jozef (advisor) ; Buzková, Petra (referee)
In the thesis we perform analysis of systemic risk in the financial and energy sector in Europe. As the econometric tool for estimating dependencies across the subjects we employ factor copula model with GAS dynamics of Oh & Patton (2013b). We apply this model to daily CDS spreads. Based on the estimated results we perform Monte Carlo simulations in order to obtain future values of CDS spreads and measure probability of systemic events. We conclude that substantially higher systemic risk is present within the financial sector. We also find that the most systemic companies from both sectors come from Spain. Analysis of chosen Czech and German energy sectors. Energy partnership in the context of energy security and EU common market
Mohr, Luděk ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Petříček, Tomáš (referee)
The presented thesis compares chosen energy industry sectors of the Czech Republic and Federal Republic of Germany and more concretely analyses the degree of energy security of both countries within the context European region. Theoretical background is based on the concurrence of neorealism with neoliberalism and can be identified as main driver of the European energy sector. The thesis had been written as a response to an unexpected shift of German energy policy from fossil towards renewable resources. This change sparked broad public discussion which questioned these concrete steps of German government with regard to the country's energy security. The author of this thesis is, however, trying to provide the point that the development of the European energy towards renewable energy, as well as the finalization of the single energy market will in the long run substantially improve individual and collective energy security of all member states.
