Does the economic growth weaken and kill us?
Ságner, Petr ; Houdek, Petr (advisor) ; Potužák, Pavel (referee)
The thesis analyzes the impact of the business cycle (represented by unemployment rate) on health (represented by mortality rates). Regression analysis has been done on panel data for 20 European countries from 2000 to 2007. Using fixed effects method with inclusion of robust errors, confirms a statistically significant effect of business cycle on 3 specific mortality rates. I reveal, that increase in growth rate of unemployment by 1% point is associated with 1,4% decrease in growth rate of mortality due to liver disease, 1,4 decrease in growth rate of mortality due to traffic accident and 1,7 increase in growth rate of mortality due to suicide. This confirms the hypothesis about the short-term positive impact of economic downturn on human health, with suicide as an important exception.
Information and Communication Technologies in the Czech Republic
Honsa, Viktor ; Mičúch, Marek (advisor) ; Kovanda, Lukáš (referee)
Development of information and communication technologies (ICT) has recently increasing importance. ICT has therefore become one of the effective tools in process of optimization and increase of competitiveness on the market. As a result of this trend, there are already some studies, having ambitions to explicitly formulate their importance. The application of ICT in the Czech Republic is similar, but there are not many studies with such ambitions. This thesis analyzes (i) the relations between, the use of ICT, total factor productivity and growth of gross added value in the Czech Republic in 1997-2007 based on growth accounting and (ii) based on econometric analysis of panel data for the Czech Republic, also estimates the importance of selected determinants influencing adoption of ICT. The output of the thesis consists of (i) determining the contribution of each input and discussion of possible synergies of ICT capital deepening and total factor productivity and (ii) specification of variables that are, based on the formulated model, shown to be statistically significant and they may affect the adoption of ICT.
Getting cardiovascular diseases by owing car?
Sojka, Jan ; Houdek, Petr (advisor) ; Brožová, Dagmar (referee)
The thesis analyzes the relationship between the growth of automobilism and cardiovascular mortality using data from the 18 European countries from 1997-2003. It describes basic factors of prevalence cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and econometric analysis which was made by using Arellano-Bond model. The analysis confirms positive relationship between the amount of pasager-kilometres and cardiovascular mortality. Further it confirms negative relationship between the dependent variable CVD mortality and amount of bypasses, the GDP growth, education and coffee consumption. Among the explanatory variables marriage, smoking and dependent variable was found the positive relationship. Reverse causality was discussed consequently after using The Granger causality tests. The estimated results were used to discuss the recommendation for government policy.
Macroeconomic fundamental analysis of Europe, Asia and America with accent on banking sector
Petr, Pavel ; Veselá, Jitka (advisor) ; Sadílek, Tomáš (referee)
The aim of the thesis is analysing and evaluating the situation in each region through macroeconomical factors. First chapter is focused on Europe. The most interesting part of this chapter is the fiscal policy. Second chapter provides insight to fascinating Asia and its huge rise in recent past. Third chapter provides analysis of development of interesting economical values in America. Last fourth chapter includes econometrical analysis of relationships between time series of macroeconomical values and stock prices of representative bank shares from all regions enriched by equations for forecasting of future stock prices.
Do More Able Individuals Have Fewer Children?
Pokorná, Táňa ; Rieger, Pavel (advisor) ; Bartoň, Petr (referee)
The aim of this empirical analysis is to verify the hypothesis that more able individuals have fewer children. By abilities for the purposes of this study we meant the level of achieved education and wage. This study is inspired by the paper of M. Beenstock. Its theoretical framework is based primarily on the works of G. Becker. It is based on the assumption there is an inverse relationship between quantity and quality of children; quality means expenditures per child. For testing we use the so-called ordinary least squares method and the real data for the United States in 1992. We test the robustness of model which can be based on equations of different types and complexity. The paper also includes sub-hypothesis about influence of woman's education on number of her children. Results of the analysis confirm that education and the wage of individuals influence negatively the number of their children.
Wages and crime
Podlenová, Marcela ; Brožová, Dagmar (advisor) ; Hlaváč, Petr (referee)
A lot of papers on the relationship between crime and labor market focused on the link between crime and unemployment. The target of this paper is to explore the dependence of property crime rate on wages in all regions of the Czech Republic in 2005 -- 2009. I use data that comes from annual statistics of Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Labor. Property crime is the sum of thefts (including car theft), burglary and robbery. The result is that property crime rate rather depends on changes in wages. Falls in overall level of wages increases property crime rate. In this paper I estimate models with different wage measures, different deterrence effect measures and I examine the dependence of each part of property crime separately. Most dependent on the wages is car theft.
Analysis of inflation dynamics in Czech Republic
Hubálek, Ondřej ; Hušek, Roman (advisor) ; Formánek, Tomáš (referee)
Bachelor work is focused on analysis of inflation dynamics in Czech Republic using econometric models. Inflation with its impacts, costs and possibilities of measuring is described in the first part of this work. There is also described influence of Czech national bank on inflation progress and inflation targeting. Part also contains basic econometric models for inflation analysis and models of adaptive expectations. Consequently there is described theory of econometrics analysis, focused on ordinary least squares method. There are also described factors that can negatively influence significance of estimated models. In the concrete it is heteroscedasticity, autocorrelation and multicolinearity. The empirical part contains econometric analysis of inflation in Czech Republic by itself, using models described in theoretical part. There are also used other models, coming out of economic hypothesis. In the end there are selected models for inflation prediction.
Attendance of the Zoological Garden in Jihlava
Královská, Radka ; Hudík, Marek (advisor) ; Lahvička, Jiří (referee)
In this work I investigated the influence of selected factors on attendance of the Zoological Garden in Jihlava in the years 2001-2010. Each time series of monthly visitors were subjected to econometric analysis to determine the influence of explanatory variables on attendance. The work leads to the conclusion that attendance is significantly affected by air temperature, which was confirmed in all four models studied. Neither rainfall nor the price of admission didn't confirm the influence on the attendance of the Zoo, which may be due to low number of observations. The most significant impact on attendance had months of April and November, while other months were found to be very important in terms of attendance Zoo Jihlava.
