The Theme of Homosexuality in the Works of W.S. Burroughs

The Bachelor's thesis deals with the analysis and literary interpretation of three works of William Seward Burroughs: the novels Junkie (1953), Naked Lunch (1959) and Queer (1985). The starting point of the thesis is a description of the Beat generation and the author's literary output regarding his own experience and attitudes. The practical part focuses on describing the main characters with respect to their experience of homosexuality. The thesis also deals with the motif of drugs, which functions as means of escaping from the reality. It also anticipates the tragic end. The motif of the journey is also considered, as another opportunity to escape in the search for the individual identity and the meaning of life. The conclusion summarizes the ambiguity of Burroughs' works, expressing his emotional personal confession and also a sharp social criticism.
Searching for Freedom in Jack London´s Novel The Road and Jack Kerouac´s Novel On the Road

The diploma thesis deals with a comparative analysis of two famous works of American literature of the 20th century: The Road (1907) by Jack London and On the Road (1957) by Jack Kerouac. The starting point of the thesis is a description of the personalities of both authors, who experience similar feelings in different periods of time. The thesis focuses on the way how London influenced Kerouac. The theoretical part deals with the meaning of the journey in the epic tradition (Bakhtin). The practical part focuses on comparing particular themes and motifs of the discussed works, while dealing with different aspects of the journey (adventure, escape, meeting, searching for identity and for the meaning of life). The thesis also deals with the experience of vagrancy as a way of life. Interpersonal relationships are analysed in an individual chapter. This chapter draws on the work Way to Wisdom by Karl Jaspers. The conclusion provides a summary of the motifs which can show how London influences Kerouac and how Kerouac develops and transforms the theme of the journey.
Media reception of Allen Ginsberg may's visit in Prague 1965

Bachelor thesis "Media reception of Allen Ginsberg may's visit in Prague 1965" analyzes articles of the Czechoslovak and foreign periodicals, which react to the American beatnik's curious visit in Prague 1965. Author of the thesis first creates the biographical and literature context of the famous poet and briefly presents main protagonists of the "beat generation". The main part of a thesis consists of processing media reception and authentic visit of Allen Ginsberg. Author qualitative describes events from perspectives of witnesses, historians, also as contrasting perspective of StB agents, who wrote a final report of poet's visit in the Czechoslovakia. By the search retrieval, author searches thematic articles in the Czechoslovak official, exile, and foreign press. Analysis of examined material brings interesting differences between censored and unattached periodicals. Furthermore the thesis describes the effects of Ginsberg's visit to Czechoslovak culture, society and beat generation authors.
Works of Beat generation in Czech Cultural Context

The bachelors thesis deals with genesis, work, philosophy and life of the authors of the Beat generation. It is focused on the founding representatives in the United States of America and the representatives who had more extensive echo in this period in Czechoslovakia. Part of the thesis is analysis of historical context of both countries. The thesis is representing reflection these authors in Czechoslovakian context and translation of their work. In closing the thesis focuses on Czechoslovak authors who could be classified as beatniks.

The bachelor thesis Media reception of Jack Kerouac's writings in Czech periodicals aims to chart the Czech media's interest in the work of Jack Kerouac and analyze the critical acclaim of his work. There were chosen especially the reviews and the epilogues for analysis. The goal of this bachelor thesis is reached by the qualitative analysis using the semiotic analysis at the same time. The chapter dealing with life and period historical and literary context precedes the own comparison of the period experts' response - an acquaintance with the author's personality helps to understand the connections of the media reception of his work. Five books by Jack Kerouac were chosen for the analysis in order to - the individual chosen works were written in all decades in which the writer has written actively; the change of the critics' stances to his books from his early career to his creative block is apparent in the text. This bachelor thesis is based mainly on the literary critics' reviews, it draws information from the critical biography Memory Babe written by Gerald Nicosia as well as from the interview with forty-five-year-old Jack Kerouac by the poet Ted Berrigan, published as The Interview with Jack Kerouac for Paris Review.
The function of the language semiosis in Prago Union's music lyrics

This bachelor thesis The function of the language semiosis in Prago Union's music lyrics" aims to capture and describe the uniqueness of linguistic expressions in the song lyrics of Adam Svatoš, the songwriter of the hip-hop music band Prago Union. It also presents the band as a whole and summarizes its contribution to the Czech music scene. Through a semiotic analysis the thesis examines significant elements of the song lyrics and describes their content, message and characteristic expressions. Primarily, it focuses on characteristic signs and symbols as the main unit and tool of the semiosis, and interpretation of the signs in the context of popular culture, where the hip hop music belongs. Furthermore, it concentrates on the description of used semantic phenomena, the explanation of their occurrence in the author's work and its appearance in the lyrics. The thesis attempts to capture the originality of expression and the contribution of the artist's work. In conclusion, the author's work is compared to the Beat Generation poetry.

The Poetry of Milan Koch in the Context of Beat Generation and Underground Literature

Key words (in English) Poetry, Underground, Beat generation, Counterculture, Analysis, Interpretation Abstract (in English) This bachelor thesis is dealing with the relationship between the literature of Czech beat generation and the underground of 60's and 70's of the 20th century. The main topic is an analysis of two collections of poems by Milan Koch: Červená KarKULKA and Hóra Láv, which are interpreted mainly in comparison to the poems of the collection Blues pro bláznivou holku by Václav Hrabě and to Howl, a poem by Allen Ginsberg. The interpretation focuses on concordances and differences in poetics of those - but also others - writers, on motivic analysis, on the bound with the context of then time and also discusses the influence of the american beat generation and their texts mediated by the translations of Jan Zábrana in the 60's (from the part in Světová literatura magazine in 1959 to later works in context of the 60's). This work is also about the influence of Allen Ginsberg's visit in Prague on the early underground and finally, present text tries to widen the knowledge about the life of the poet Milan Koch, too.

This bachelor thesis deals with the movement of American authors of "beat generation" and the Czech context of this movement, headed by writer Václav Hrabě. The thesis summarizes the period cultural-historical situation in the USA and in Czechoslovakia, elaborates issues of "beatniks" in a most detailed spectrum and explaining their life and work. In this thesis is also detailed analysis of the life and work of Czech writer Václav Hrabě, in the context of works by American authors. Part of the thesis is a study relating to translation and publication of works of American writers of "beat generation" in period Czechoslovakia.
