Colonial thinking of Czech travellers at the juncture of teh 19th and 20th centuries

The subject of this diploma thesis is to look at the journalistic work of Czech travelers at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries through postcolonial theory, using the example of orientalist Alois Musil. It draws primarily on the psychoanalytic reflections of Frantz Fanon, the essays of Aimé Césaire, and Edward W. Said's conception of orientalism. The subject of the thesis is also to look at Czechoslovakia's "colonialism without colonies", especially through two theories: the non-colonial orientalism of Sara Lemmen and the colonial exceptionalism of Filip Herza. The intention of the thesis is also to mention the history of Czechoslovak colonialism, which forms the context of Musil's work, and to summarize research that focuses on the Czechoslovak image of colonies and the colonized. These serve, among other things, as a point of comparison with the results of the analysis of this thesis. The main aim of the thesis is to find out whether Alois Musil's journalistic work contains stereotypes of colonial thinking, or what specific stereotypes are involved. This bachelor thesis deals with the academic and popularize activities of Alois Musil Czech Arabist and Orientalist. The first part of thesis outline life of Alois Musil which is the key to understanding his publications, whether academic or purely towards the wider public. Biographical section aims to highlight moments and contemporary context, which led the priest originally from Hana begin the way of life of cartographer, ethnographer and ethnologist of the Middle East, parts of the Maghreb, the Horn of Africa and India, making him an indelible place in the human history and discoveries. The main part of the thesis is the analysis of academic and popularize activities of Alois Musil with special emphasis on the period of his tenure in the Czechoslovakian Radio. This part is divided into three subsections, each of them is separately dedicated to: academic activities, further popularize activities, and lastly works for Czechoslovakian Radio. These parts are based on extensive works of Alois Musil written in Czech and English language and his own lectures recorded for Czechoslovakian Radio after 1930. Shards of the history of the First republic. Oriental Institute, Alois Musil and unrealized travel to the Orient

The study is aimed at the very beginnings of the Oriental Institute in Prague. The main role playd orientalist Alois Musil, minister Rudolf Hotowetz and a lawyer Zdeněk Fafl. They prepared the official part of the institute – statutes, the members list etc. The main amount of work should be shaped according the results of an Oriental travel. From a letter by Alois Musil we know all the details he planned to undertake but finally due to his other scholar work this travel was canceled. However the plans from the letter show very clearly the role of the Oriental institute as an important economic and cultural institution.

The Thypology of Czech travelogue to the Orient, resulting in the second half of the 19th century.

The aim of this diploma thesis is to do a typology of the czech books of travel to the Orient written during the second half of the 19th century or the turn of the 19th and 20th century. Typology will be created on the basis of comparative analysis of morphology and thematic parts of the relevant texts. The basis for comparacy are the texts Vítězslav Hálek, Jan Neruda, František Klement, Alois Musil and Josef Kořenský. The work also insight to the development of travel literature, readers will also zoomed history of travel to the Oriental area.
