Piracy in the Horn of Africa Region

The diploma thesis is a case study, which focuses on the identification of the key aspects influencing the presence of maritime piracy in the Horn of Africa region and the birth of Somali piracy. In accordance with the research questions, the thesis analyses the main factors that are influencing the birth of maritime piracy and the piracy itself the most. In the historical context, the thesis focuses on the causes for the piracy in the Horn of Africa region, as well as on the similarities between the historical and modern maritime piracy. The thesis also contains a detailed description of all measures taken against the Somali pirates. Based on the evaluation of the engagement of different international actors in the fight against the Somali pirates, the thesis analyses their role in association with the suppression of maritime piracy in the Horn of Africa region, including the legal enforceability, both in the historical context, and the international law, more precisely the national law, possibly international agreements. The analysis conducted in the boundaries of a case study has undoubtedly proven the advantage of an international cooperation while dealing with global issues, even if there are, seemingly insuperable, structural limitations. The Horn of Africa food crisis

This work focuses on the Horn of Africa food crisis. The food problem is one of the largest and oldest problems of mankind. This problem is closely related to the problem of hunger and poverty. Lack of access to food, raw materials and water is reflected in higher tension and violence, which then results in various conflicts. The work provides a theoretical basis for this problem. The following section describes the causes of the food problem, such as population growth, lack of education, land degradation, climate change, natural disasters and the like. The practical part is focused on the analysis of statistical data on demographics, economics, poverty, foreign aid, foreign trade and agriculture of the Horn of Africa. In the last part of the thesis, there are outlined possible solutions of undesirable situation in which the Somali peninsula is located, among them an increase in the population's education, stabilization of population, the development of agriculture, change of ownership of the soil, economic growth, integration groupings and food programs.

It is focused on the course of politics, analysis and future development of both regional and mutual conflicts. First part provides general characteristics of the region as the whole. Next parts deals in detail with each state separetely. There is also given special space to the Ethiopia-Eritrea and Somalia-Ethiopia conflicts.
Specifics and problems of countries in the Horn of Africa

The paper is concerned with the problems of countries in the Horn of Africa (Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti and Somalia). The first part provides general geographical, historical and demographic information about the Horn of Africa. Further it analyzes the political and security situation in this region, with a special focus on piracy in Somalia. The second part, in particular deals, with economic problems and region specifics problems such as an economic dependence on agriculture and the impact of climate change, further macro economical development, foreign aid, standard of living and the fall-out from HIV/AIDS on poverty. The last part describes territorial and commodity structure of foreign trade with special an emphasis on Ethiopia, where important role has coffee growing.
