Turkish Foreign Policy towards Syria between 2002 and 2011
Jirásek, Vojtěch ; Aslan, Emil (advisor) ; Horák, Slavomír (referee)
This thesis studies Turkish foreign policy in Syria between years 2002 and 2011. Justice and Development Party (AKP) ruled in this period. In comparison with its predecessors, AKP started to focus more on Middle East and its foreign policy was often called as "neo-Ottoman". AKP brought concepts of "zero problems with neighbors" and "strategic depth" into Turkish foreign policy. Turkey also started to use more "soft power" in this period. This work searches those four concepts in Turkish foreign policy with Syria. Although Turkish foreign policy with Syria in years 2002 to 2011 contains number of elements of neo-Ottomanism, "zero problems with neighbors", "strategic depth" and "soft power", it is impossible to say it was based only on these concepts.
The Causes of the Change in the Outcome of the Turkish Parliamentary Election in November 2015
Tkadlečková, Dorothea ; Aslan, Emil (advisor) ; Kubát, Michal (referee)
This bachelor thesis concerns the causes of the change in the outcome of the Turkish parliamentary election in November 2015. First, the outcomes of the June and November parliamentary elections are compared, and on these grounds the shift of the MHP and HDP voters towards AKP is evaluated. The results of the autumn election are then appraised through analysis of the inter-election period's events and the strategic steps taken by AKP. The thesis comes to the conclusion that the change in the November parliamentary election was connected to the events in the inter-election period, particularly the transformation of the internal security situation in Turkey and the parties' inability to agree upon the building of a governmental coalition. The shift in the November parliamentary election was also related to the strategic steps made by AKP to change the candidates on the parties' electoral lists.
Muslim Democracy in Turkey
Scholzová, Markéta ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Váňová, Ludmila (referee)
This thesis aims to analyze the transformations of concept of secularism from a long- term perspective of the formation and consolidation of Turkish republic between 1923 - 2013. Central contention is that secularism, as a social phenomenon, was originally understood as an integral part of state-led modernization project, sponsored by Turkish armed forces between 1920s and early 1980s. However since late 1980s and particularly under AKP governments (2002 - 2014) secularism - branded as Kemalism has gradually become a subject of intense conflicts and new interpretations seeking to reconcile Turkish secularist principles with new forms of public participation driven by Islamic symbols. Keywords Democracy, secularism, authoritarian regime, Kemalism, army, political parties, AKP, islam, religious symbols, islamic clothing
The Justice and Development Party and the European Union: Analysis of the interest in joining the EU
Vaňousová, Daniela ; Aslan, Emil (advisor) ; Najšlová, Lucia (referee)
This thesis aims to answer the question why did Turkish ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) dropped the consistent reform initiative and effort to ensure fulfillment of EU entry criteria after starting accession negotiations in 2005. To answer this question the paper analyses the interest of AKP in EU accession. The causes of interest in the EU are examined firstly and then it is focused on the reasons responsible for the loss of interest. The paper demonstrates that the transformation of interest of the ruling party in EU accession was influenced by the combination of two factors. The first factor was the lack of credibility of the accession negotiations with the EU and the ensuing improbability of membership. The second factor was the consolidation of the AKP political power. With respect to the nature of the AKP original interest in the integration of Turkey into the EU, the thesis concludes that the interest depended on the necessity of the accession process for domestic political purposes of ruling party. Afterwards the party achieved its objective, which was to get rid of opponents and secure their position in the Turkish political system, the AKP had no reason to try to meet all requirements of the European Union, given the unlikely outcome of accession negotiations.
The aspects of neo-Ottomanism in the Turkish foreign policies toward Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo
Nagy, Gergely ; Aslan, Emil (advisor) ; Pikal, Kamil (referee)
The thesis examines the aspects of neo-Ottomanism in Turkish foreign policies toward three Balkan countries - Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo -, focusing on the developments of the last decade. Turkey has become quite active in the Balkans and in these countries in the last few years, however, this activism is not without any antecendents. These areas were the core European territories of the Ottoman Empire and after the dissolution of this entity, Turkey still attached special importance to these countries, albeit during the Cold War relations were cooler. On the other hand, with the fall of the Iron Curtain, the rise of the AK Party to government position and Ahmet Davutoglu becoming Minister of Foreign Affairs in Turkey, the Balkans started to receive particular "limelight" in Turkish foreign policy. New ideas, expressions, approaches were incorporated into the forming self-confident and assertive foreign policy of Turkey. However, this new policy, referred to as neo- Ottomanism in many cases, infered criticisms too, from the West and from local politicians in the Balkans too. The thesis aims to remake and remodel this expression by highlighting other, more positive elements of it. Turkey's political, economic, cultural and military relations with Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and...
