Czech stained glass windows from 1945 to the present
Sellami Žďárská, Veronika ; Pech, Milan (advisor) ; Mergl, Jan (referee)
The thesis focuses on a previously untreated topic. It deals with Czech stained glass from 1945 to the present. Based on the exploration of stained glass on both sacral and public premises, as well as on pieces created for the presentation of Czechoslovakia at international exhibitions, it creates a comprehensive picture of the development of Czech stained glass in this period. The first part deals with the renewal of glass making and professional schools. Most attention is paid to Josef Kaplický's studio at the Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design in Prague. The thesis also documents works of glassmakers and artists in 1950s. As a breaking point for the development of stained glass, EXPO'58 is stated. In 1960s, the World Fair in Brussels widely influenced activities of Czech glassmaker who started inserting stained glass innovatively into reliefs using other experimental forms. It also shows that, in connection with new technological innovations in 1970s and 1980s, stained glass was applied in reconstructed and new buildings. The text implies that after the Velvet Revolution in 1989, a change occurred in the State's approach to the support of decorating public buildings, and in the same period, new private artistic glassmaking workshops and stained glass studios were established. Cameraless photography of Běla Kolářová
Tomková, Zuzana ; LEDVINA, Josef (advisor) ; DVOŘÁK, Tomáš (referee)
The first part presents a brief summary of the historical genesis of cameraless photography in the context of the general history of photography. In line with G. Batchen's concept, the work emphasizes the autonomy of this technological and expressive process and qualitative comparability with the procedures and manifestations of classic camera photography. This "photographic history" culminates in the development of avant-garde photographic experiments, especially in the systematic development of Man Ray's "rayograms." Against the avant-garde concept (dadaism, Bauhaus, elements of graphic constructivism) is defined the concept of Běla Kolářová from the beginning of the sixties of the 20th century, which forms the very theme of the work. Specific procedures and concrete results of Běla Kolářová´s work ("artificial negatives", "X-rays of the circle", "light drawings") are observed in the context of the creative experiments of the Czech art scene of the time: visual poetry, J. Kolář's collages, Czech informel, neoconstructivism and geometric abstraction, „Confrontation“ and „Crossroad“ groups, etc. The originality of Kolářová's contribution is reflected through the analysis of the interpretation works of the Czech kunsthistory (J. Hlaváček, J. Valoch, K. Císař, J. Padrta and others). It is emphasized in what Kolářová's creation of photograms exceeds conventional classifications, and what specifically refers to non-derived creative resources and conceptualizations (M. Duchamp, R. Caillois, surrealism, W. Benjamin). From these comparative aspects, the conclusions are generalizing the contribution and importance of the cameraless photography of Běla Kolářová as a legitimate part of the history of Czech visual art of the second half of the 20th century.
Concept of The Environment in expert view of Czechoslovak architects 1960-1971
Chmátal, Jonáš ; Spurný, Matěj (advisor) ; Janáč, Jiří (referee)
This study analyses the concept of The Environment among Czechoslovak architects and on the field of architectural theory in the 1960s. Environmental problematic was frequent topic across different expert groups since end of the 1950s and especially in the 1960s. Architects was one those groups and they actively further developed this concept of The Environment and environmental problematics during 1960s. This effort had brought interesting theoretical concepts and ideas and was also influenced by general Czechoslovak intellectual milieu of 1960s. Architects also started to critically address the degradation of natural environment due to increasing industrial pollution. They also accomplished several successes on the field of environmental problematics. They managed to establish specialized field of study and played a key role in some international conferences and meetings dealing with environmental problems under UNESCO, OSN or International Union of Architects. This study indicates some of yet not well known intellectual riches of Czechoslovak 1960s and also points that continuous environmental degradation during the reign of communist party was not caused by insufficient expertise and the source for this major problem should be further researched. Key words: Architecture, Environment,...

Oral History of Interpreting in Czechoslovakia before 1989
Šindelářová, Marie ; Špirk, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Čeňková, Ivana (referee)
The objective of the present thesis is to describe the situation in the interpreting industry in Czechoslovakia before the change of regime in 1989. The thesis specifically focuses on self-taught interpreters. The primary objective of the thesis is to collect and present, in a comprehensive way, personal memories of such interpreters. At present such memories are diffuse in texts on various topics or in personal, more or less extensive, memoirs of some of these interpreters. In addition, the thesis aims to present such memories against the background of the general developments in institutional interpreting in Europe and Czechoslovakia during the relevant period. With this thesis being the first domestic study of this kind, the method of oral history has been used and complemented with the analysis of archive materials. The empirical part of the thesis is mainly based on 12 interviews with self-taught interpreters, who were active interpreters in the second half of the twentieth century in our country. Furthermore, it compares and complements this information with written sources from that period (in particular Ad notam, the bulletin of the Czech Union of Interpreters and Translators) and outlines the practical and theoretical aspects of the then interpreting activities outside institutional...
JAZZ QUARTETS WITHOUT HARMONIC INSTRUMENT DEVELOPMENT AND TRANSFORMATIONS FROM THE SECOND HALF OF THE 20th CENTURY TO THE PRESENT TIME
Kalfus, Petr ; SLAVÍK, Jiří (advisor) ; SOUKUP, Luboš (referee)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to describe and map the development of the phenomenon of a jazz quartet not containing a harmonic instrument and consisting of two wind instruments, a double bass, and drums from its beginnings in the second half of the 20th century to present day. My second goal is to point out historic transformations of style and changes in the roles of individual instruments from the point of view of composition on the one hand and interpretation and interaction within the band on the other. The practical section of the thesis demonstrates these transformations by showing specific examples in transcriptions. The last but not least of my objectives is to describe how this format reflects in my own musical activities and my personal techniques of both composition and interpretation.
Experimental film in Buenos Aires since 2001
Moralesová, Alexandra ; POSPISZYL, Tomáš (advisor) ; ČENĚK, David (referee)
Experiment in any art discipline attracts attention and is associated with the beginnings, immaturity, and experiencing the new. If in the 21st century an experimental tendency is emerging in film, a medium and discipline considered to be exhausted and in decline, it is unsettling. In Argentine film, experiment is first mentioned in connection with the non-conformist art scene of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Filmmakers Narcisa Hirsch and Claudio Caldini are representatives of that decade; they are also witnesses who connect this "first" era with the first and second decade of the 21st century, since they are, once again, among contemporary Argentine artists who turn to film as the medium for experiment. Whether or not it is possible to talk about a tradition of experimental film in Argentina is not as substantial as (acknowledging) the conditions which accompanied its rise in the two periods mentioned. The 1970s were a period marked by the regime of military dictatorship. The year 2001 represents a turning point in which economic, political and social crisis erupted. In both instances, the circumstances wholly pervaded the life of the society and its art and can be seen as critical. Whether crisis creates the potential for experiment is an open question underlaying reflections on the contemporary possibilities of experimental film and art in general. The present work aims to compare the wider social and cultural conditions and creative and production strategies of filmmakers in the 1970s with the conditions and strategies of the filmmakers working after 2001 in Buenos Aires. Furthermore, with regard to the expansion of the audiovisual scene and its transformation into the field of arts of the moving image, it proposes to look at contemporary experimental film in Argentina through the practices of authors from different fields of art such as Claudio Caldini, Pablo Mazzolo and Andrés Denegri.
