Power to Resist: A Case Study of Czechoslovakia in 1968
Vodička, Ondřej ; Ludvík, Jan (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
Issuing threats of military action against opponents is a standard tool that states use to get what they desire. Yet, the history of issuing military threats has not followed realist argument about the decisiveness of power in international relations. In fact, more powerful states cannot get what they want through threats. It is puzzling why states resist coercion when facing a militarily superior state. To answer that question, this master's thesis seeks to explore the logic behind Czechoslovak unwillingness to comply with demands of the "Five" Warsaw Treaty Organization states, which demanded an end to the Prague Spring reforms. The 1968 Czechoslovak case is especially valuable for the crushing power asymmetry between the coalition of challengers and the target of the military threats. I extract four plausible explanations from the literature on coercion, which validity to account for Czechoslovak behaviour is then analysed. I argue, that the most significant factor was the domestic political dynamic inside Czechoslovakia, which served to Czechoslovak officials as the argument during the bargaining process with the "Warsaw Five". Besides that, it also limited the possibility to implement the demanded measures.
Medieval Manuscript Libraries of the Regular Canons of St. Augustin in Bohemia
Ebersonová, Adéla ; Doležalová, Lucie (advisor) ; Marek, Jindřich (referee) ; Vodička, Ondřej (referee)
This dissertation examines the medieval libraries of the order of Regular Canons of St. Augustine in Bohemia. The research is concentrated on manuscripts that were written before the end of the 15th century, together with handwritten parts bound together with old prints and fragments removed from manuscripts. The aim of the study is to fill gaps in existing research and provide a systematic overview of the libraries of canonries in Bohemia, namely Roudnice, Jaroměř, Karlov in Prague, Sadská, Rokycany, Třeboň, and Borovany. The research of these libraries is based mainly on preserved manuscripts. Their affiliation to the libraries can be identified with certainty thanks to ownership remarks, in some cases also by typical shelf marks or notes about the content of manuscripts, possibly by other circumstances connected with the history of the books. In addition, there are contemporary sources of the history of some libraries (library catalogues, inventories, records of gifts and testaments, notes about payments for manuscripts, records of the purchase of the books, or reports of the sale of manuscripts in exile). There is one chapter dedicated to each canonry, including a bibliographic overview, a brief summary of the history of the canonry and a detailed survey of the history of its library. The core...
Faces of Fury: Representation of war in the memoirs of military professionals, 1620-1649
Vodička, Ondřej ; Wohlmuth, Petr (advisor) ; Andresová, Klára (referee)
This master's degree thesis adheres to the genre of historical anthropology of war and warfare. Its main goal is to conduct interpretative research and comparison of variables of war culture, represented in the diaries and memoires of military professionals of the Thirty Years' War namely Robert Monro, Augustin von Fritsch, Peter Hagendorf and Sydnam Poyntz. Theoretical and methodological grounding for this thesis is provided by the symbolic anthropology in legacy of Clifford Geertz and Robert Darnton. Analysis of the war on this level allows for the better understanding of the unique character of the Thirty Years' War from the perspective of the motivation of common soldiers, their relationship among each other, with civilian population, with their commanders and with God too.
Geographic information systems
Vodička, Ondřej ; Palovská, Helena (advisor) ; Strossa, Petr (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on geographic information systems (GIS). The first part of this thesis introduces GIS, it shows their specifics and emphasizes the significance of standardization in the GIS industry. The second part describes the current situation on the GIS market. The GIS software is divided into different categories depending on the provided functionality and at the same time it is divided into an open source and a commercial part. Based on the categories, individual software products are introduced. The next part individually deals with GIS products offered by the Oracle corporation. The last part provides various possibilities, suggestions and recommendations for designing a GIS architecture using ESRI products.
