Reform of the Autonomous Statute of Catalonia and its relation to the Reform of Spanish Constitution and territorial organization
Fillnerová, Jitka ; Perottino, Michel (advisor) ; Urban, Traian (referee)
The diploma thesis Reform of the Autonomous Statute of Catalonia and its relation to the Reform of Spanish Constitution and territorial organization deals with the issue of Catalan autonomy and in particular with the recent reform of the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia in 2006. It is a complete reform, which provoked a controversy leading even before the Constitutional Court and divided the political actors both on the Catalan and on the Spanish level. The extension of autonomy in the areas of competencies, financing, doctrinal aspects relating to the recognition of Catalan as an official language and especially to the denomination of Catalonia as a nation, has caused a growing divergence between autonomous communities and could lead to the aspirations of other to acquire the same status or privileges as Catalonia. The Spanish Constitution does not provide any specific definition of territorial organization, which gives the autonomous communities the possibility to specify the scope and extent of their autonomy. The debate concerning the Constitutional reform, which could make the system more clear and effective, started as a reaction to the statute reform in Catalonia. In the current political context, the reform of the Constitution seems to be unreal as the two main political parties - PP and PSOE - are...

Substate nationalism in the EU. Scotland and the Basque Country.
Horanská, Katarína ; Kasáková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Urban, Traian (referee)
Diploma thesis "Substate nationalism in the EU. Scotland and the Basque Country" deals with Scottish and Basque substate nationalism and their secessionist objectives. Five for nationalism crucial areas have been chosen, analysed for each of the two nationalisms, and compared. These areas are historical background, language, will to form a nation, economy and political base of nationalism. Scottish and Basque nationalisms are very different in their essence, the first being civic, pacifist and inclusive, while the second is based on ethnic premises in a polarized society strained by violence. However, both nationalisms have strong desire to gain independence and also various similarities in some of the factors can be found. The second part of the thesis deals with decentralization and europeization of the two nation states of Spain and the UK in respect to their nationalists. Could the new European and domestic opportunity structures satisfy the Basque and the Scottish nationalists, or will these changes work as an additional incentive for their independence struggles?
The Impact of the europeanisation process on Spain
Urban, Traian ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (advisor) ; Rovná, Lenka (referee) ; Abrhám, Josef (referee)
This dissertation analyses the europeanisation process and its impact on Spain. Its main aim is to find answers to the following questions - which Spanish institutions were mostly affected by Spain joining the European Communities/European Union and how successful was Spain in putting their political priorities on the top of the list of the European Union agenda. It analyses the main impacts and emphasizes the institutional changes that were put in place with the aim of fulfilling the European political requirements. Having done the analysis using the appropriate tools, this dissertation comes to a conclusion that the Spanish membership in the European Communities/European Union had an important impact on domestic institutional structure and the political system. It also shows that in certain aspects Spain was able to push its national interests and to influence the European integration process in the areas of its priority interests. On the other hand, this dissertation also comes to a conclusion, that with the growing number of member states and the impact of economic crisis Spain has lost its productive power that was characteristic for this country until the end of 2004. Spanish-Maroccan Diplomatic Crisis (2001-2003)
Juklová, Jana ; Perottino, Michel (advisor) ; Urban, Traian (referee)
The thesis deals with the analysis of problematic fields in Spanish-Maroccan relations, in particular it focuses on the course and causes of the diplomatic crisis between 2001 and 2003. The theory of interdependence applied to the bilateral relations between Spain and Marocco represents the basic background for the analysis. In theory the pragmatic approach of consecutive Spanish governments should have a conflict prevention effect and thus it should cause the limitation of use of force. However, the diplomatic crisis shows that the development of cooperation between the neighbouring countries and the increasing dependence were not able to prevent the increasing tension between Spain and Marocco. This tension is mainly caused by the issues related to the immigration from North Africa, problems linked to fishery, the dispute of Western Sahara and the Spanish North Africa territories of Ceuta and Melilla that are claimed by Marocco.
