Israeli Folk Dance:History and Presence with a Particular Focus on Dancing in the Czech Republic

This thesis intends to introduce Israeli folk dance from a number of different perspectives. In the first part, based on literature review, the author presents the origins of Israeli folk dances in Israel as well as their roots and the way they further function in a current Israeli society. Special attention is given to the problematic labeling of Israeli folk dance as "folk". The second part of the thesis is based on the author's own field work and describes the ways Israeli folk dances are practiced in the Czech environment. Whereas in Israel these dances are mostly connected with demonstration of Israeli identity, they get different meanings in the Czech environment. Firstly the author attempted to reconstruct the history of spreading of Israeli folk dances in the Czech environment and to map the different groups involved in these dances. Collection of these facts can be further used as an information source for all researchers wishing to conduct studies on Israeli folk dances in the Czech Republic in the future. Secondly the author concentrated on the ways of practicing Israeli folk dances in a Prague group called Besamim. Evangelista Papazzone and his manuscript Tractatus de arte saltandi

The aim of this dissertation is to analyse and evaluate the content of a unique source from the Rudolphine period, the manuscript by Evangelista Papazzone, a dance master at the court of Rudolf II. The starting point is the independent transcription and translation of the manuscript into Czech. First, the thesis paints a picture of the situation in Bohemia in the second half of the 16th century and the court of Rudolf II, summarizes the existing knowledge about the relationship of the Bohemian nobility to Italian culture and the importance of dance in Bohemia, and discusses the professional possibilities of an Italian dance master in this milieu. The thesis also presents in detail the Italian dance style of the 16th century and presents an analysis of Italian dance treatises, in the context of which Papazzone's manuscript is considered. His treatise is exceptional in that it is the only one of the Renaissance Italian dance manuals to have been written outside Italy, but it shows numerous correspondences with them, especially in that it also favours the gagliarda, the most popular Renaissance dance. Folklore Revival Movements in Europe post 1950. Shifting Contexts and Perspectives.

This collection of papers emerges from a symposium on the folklore revival movement of the second half of the twentieth century which was held in Prague in October 2017. As the current findings of ongoing research in this volume demonstrate, across Europe, the performance and investigation of folklore revival movements, especially music and dance, is of vital interest and relevance to understanding their manifestation in the second half of the twentieth century. This present collection opens the door to further critical examination of the power of such cultural practices, their political salience, whether at national, institutional or individual levels, and their deep-seated impact on people who have encountered and evaluated folk revivalism in their lives.

Soundscape of Prague Psychedelic Guitar Rock Scene

Since its beginnings in the 1960s, psychedelic rock music and "psychedelic sound" sound has become an integral part of rock and Western popular music. This scope of this PhD thesis covers the performance of psychedelic rock music in Prague, Czech Republic, i.e. Prague's psychedelic soundscape (Shelemay 2006). The structure of the thesis is loosely inspired by the scapes concepts as defined by Arjun Appadurai (1996). First, it summarizes the development of the "psychedelic sound" and employs ethnographic research in order to elucidate what this sound means to its agents within the studied soundscape. Subsequently, it proceeds to discover who the agents of this scene are, how the roles of the performers and the audience blend together, how the agents understand their music within the multi-genre context of the scene, and what the phenomenon of psychedelic rock music means to the agents - both in terms of its sonic elements and the "ritual" (Turner 1969) aspect of live performances, often associated with the use of mind-altering substances. My essay deals with phenomenon of Czech folk. Emic part traces chronologically influencing aspects involving my artistic development from the viewpoint of author, listener and repressive organs. Urban music developed from the folk revival into the subversive protest song movement. Auto-ethnographic research of myself as concerned participant merges with temporary comments, opinions, photographic documentation of generational shift of sensibility. Commercialisation leads folk movement into the mainstream pop culture. Role of gens and mems, dreams, subconscious helped folk musicians survive totality regime. Czech folk is not dead. Emerges at the edge of new subgenres, exposed to commodifications of cultural industry.

Flamenco as a reflection of andalusian popular culture

(in English) The aim of the thesis is to treat the topic of flamenco culture in the place of its origins. It interconnects filological and ethnographical data and the manner of perception of the cultural region of its origin. Its main focus is to describe the history of flamenco as a complex as well as its compounds. Its contents are dedicated to the history and the fundamental elements that participate on the formation and function of the culture itself. The emphasis lays on the expression of the dance, and the so called canto. The end of the thesis is dealing with the phenomenon of flamenco outside Andalucía, in this case the czech cultural region.

Argentine Tango: A Portrait of Gender in Society

Master thesis "Argentine Tango: A Portrait of Gender in Society" deals with the parallel between the evolution of gender relations in society and in dance. The goal of the essay is to confirm the hypothesis that the reflection of social change in a cultural phenomena is visible in tango through the change of traditional roles which are challenged by the deconstruction of the formerly consistent parallel body - gender - gender role in dance - gender performance. The first part presents an overview of the sociological theories of social construction of the body and sociocultural meaning and communicative potential of dance. The theory of gender performance is a linking idea which enables the author to analyze human body and its movement as a text in a context. The second part is an introduction to history, evolution, structure and ethics of the argentine tango. The core of the essay is the third part, the analysis of the gender structure of tango and its evolution through the analysis of construction, performance, troubling and deconstruction of the gender stereotypes and archetypes in tango. The author points out the illusory hierarchy of these concepts and their postmodern characteristics.

Contemporary Dance and Ballroom Dance: Different Dance Environments from the Point View of Dancers and Audience

The thesis examines the phenomenon of nonverbal communication via dance from the perspective of anthropology of dance. The objective of the thesis is to analyze the dance environment of contemporary and ballroom dance, based on the point of view of the dancers as well as of the audience. I determine the differences in the ways these forms of dance communicate through dance performances. I examine how dance functions as a means of language, on which level the communication is processing and what meanings and messages the audience decodes within the dance performance. The phenomenon of dance in its natural environment is studied semiotically, as a form of language in certain context. The fieldwork method is based on participant observation and semistructured interviews with both dancers and audience. The research was conducted in the studio of Nová scéna - Lidé v pohybu in Prague, which teaches contemporary dance, and in the dance club Akcent Dobruška, which focuses on ballroom dance. Acculturation Strategies in Musical Self-presentations of Immigrants in the Czech Republic

This thesis is based on my research dealing with musicians - members of different immigrant minority communities, who explicitly identify themselves with their ethnicity and the region of their origin. The musicians mention that they come, e.g., from Cuba, Ukraine or generally from "Central Asia" and the music offered to the audience is presented as "Cuban", "Ukrainian folk" or "traditional music of Central Asia". The subject of study are their concerts, regarded as musical occasions - performances - with defined modes of participants' interaction. In the Goffmanian sense, the meaning of each selfpresentation is determined by the behavior of the musicians during the performances, and the repertoire, place and occasion of the event and type of audience are considered as "bearers of sings". In their self-presentations, the musicians expose in various ways who they are, where they come from and in various ways present the musical (not only) culture of their origin. Inspiring myself by typology of acculturation strategies formulated by John W. Journey of Mantra from India to the Czech Republic: Contribution to Ethnography of Music and Globalization

This PhD thesis is a multi-sited ethnographical study (Marcus 1995) of globalized world through focusing on the social life (Appadurai 1986) of one of the well-known Vedic mantras (the Gayatri Mantra) as a globalized phenomenon and a commodity. Chanting of mantras (Hindu sacred chants in Vedic Sanskrit; pronunciation, intonation and rhythm of which is prohibited to change in the Brahmanic discourse) which had been a local cultural practice, has become a globally known phenomenon. During the globalizing process of their cultural transmission from India to the West and later to the Czech Republic, the mantras have gained new sound forms, new social and cultural contexts, new functions and new meanings. Contemporary cultural productions of mantras are a thick example how the present inter-continental connectedness works in everyday life, music and in the relationship to the Sacred. Selected places on this trajectory will be sites of the fieldwork. The project will research, how the transmission process happens, what music forms it takes, and what meanings are attached to them by their agents.
