Cyprus (the Future of Divided Island)
Kratochvílová, Eva ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Riegl, Martin (referee)
Diploma thesis "Cyprus (the Future of Divided Island)" deals with current situation on Cyprus, which is for many decades divided and even a fter the entrance to the EU there is no solution to this conflict. Cyprus is also the last state in Europe, which is still split into two separate parts, and despite of the efforts of many mediators and UN negotiators, the comprehensive plan for reunification of the island was rejected in the 2004 referendum. The majority of the Greek Cypriots was against the acceptance of this plan, while in the Turkish Cypriot part of Cyprus the plan was accepted (despite the opposition of political elites). The aim of this thesis is with 4 the regard to the preferences of the actors of the conflict (in the process of its negotiation and also after its rejections) to create a hierarchy of possible future scenarios for the solution of the Cyprus conflict. Under this objective I will analyze the following scenarios: unification of the island on the basis of the UN plan (the so called Annan plan), de facto recognition of Northern Cyprus, continuation of the status quo, creation of the centralized state and Turkish Cypriot North becoming an EU protectorate. As a theoretical framework for the analysis of the resolution of Cyprus conflict, I will utilize the theory of conflict resolution....
A Search for Common Ground - Disparity With & Within the Arab League
Crisp, Daniel ; Riegl, Martin (advisor) ; Hrishabh, Sandilya (referee)
The Arab League is an International Organization that is not unifying the Arab Community. There are many reasons for this. It has many incongruences in what is necessary to have a unified and successful regional body. Some are infrastructural, some are cultural, some are behavioral, and some are a combination. Most notably the lack of commonality is a key issue especially in the face of a proclaimed Arab identity. That problem is further exacerbated by the polemic rather than academic nature of discourse on Arabism, Islam and the region. Another key problem faced in the region is the multitude of wars. The many wars have created instability, chaos, and an inability to move forward in the region often due to their cyclical nature. There is nothing uniting the region as a whole, although arab and islamic movements have tried. Nationalism has prevailed as the cohesive unit in the region. In that regard, the nation is the only structure in place to deal with the many crises that the region continues to face. There is no umma and what is more there is no concrete arab identity, it is only based on history. Though there are societal customs and institutions inherited from that history, one of which is the emphasis on honor over acquisition (though not absolute in the region). This makes the pursuit of a union of...
EU and UN in Crisis Management
Bertlová, Pavlína ; Rovná, Lenka (advisor) ; Riegl, Martin (referee)
7 Abstract The focus of this research is in the area of EU-UN relations crisis management, more specifically, the role which the European Union plays within the UN structure as a contributor to the UN crisis management as well as to numerous peacekeeping missions. This occurs at the time when the UN needs to face the crises and seek support of other world players to carry out the missions so that a chance to succeed in these difficult tasks would be higher. The research approach adopted in the thesis includes qualitative analysis and case study methods. The findings from this research provide evidence that the European Union is a competent partner for the United Nations in the field of crisis management, in spite of different policies and agendas. The main conclusion is that the European Union, after participation in several operations and commitment to take part in others, the organisation has already proved that it is a key player on the world scene in crisis management as it has shown its high attention to world crises, not only in Europe. 79
Constructive Engagement or Illegal Investment?
Levely, Ian ; Levrincová, Petra (advisor) ; Riegl, Martin (referee)
This thesis examines the role of transnational corporations in preventing human rights abuse and conflict, along with the limits to proactive strategies and engagement with host governments. It concludes by applying these principles in a case study: the oil and gas industry in Burma. The issue is approached both practically and theoretically from economic, legal and political approaches. In some cases it is possible for companies to avoid or mitigate risks by adopting proactive strategies that might included training and community development programs. A firm that recognizes these issues and adopts a socially responsible strategy may justify their presence in a given country based on the overall effect it has, despite some negative consequences, such as financing a corrupt regime. Furthermore, it can be assumed in many cases that a firm that withdraws will quickly be replaced by another firm, which may be less sensitive to these concerns. Based on these grounds, a company might argue that their presence in a country where the government does not respect human rights represents constructive engagement with the host country's regime. While this line of reasoning is certainly valid, and while this strategy is feasible in some cases, there are certain boundaries that firms should not cross. Firstly, any...
Typology of Quasi-states
Riegl, Martin ; Hnízdo, Bořivoj (advisor) ; Romancov, Michael (referee)
Subject of my diploma thesis is typology of quasi-states. I primarily clarify and explain the defnition of sovereign states. After that I focus on the definition of quasi-state, which is in its fundamentals a deviation from a sovereign state. I define four basic categories of quasi-states based on analysis of international community during the active presence of UN, which reflect missing attributes of gregariousness at individual quasi-states. These are not meeting the geographical (experiental) charakteristics of gregariousness, partial limitations or full absence of internal sovereignty, partial limitations or full absence of external sovereignty or limitation of both internal and external sovereignty. I section these four categories into further subcategories. These break up the quasi-states according specific characteristics in given subcategories. There is a general description of characteritical trait at each subcategory that belong into the subcategory. Subsequently brief analytical case studies are being produced for each subcategory. Their objective is to clcarify specific traits of each subcategory and substantiate the presumed typology I conclude that in the times of UN we can witness steep growth of sovereign states, which have been very weak already at the time of its establishment. This...

Region of Central Asia has its peculiarities because of the differences in culture, mentality and economic development that should be taken into consideration at planning of the joint activities.
