Horizontal job-education mismatch in the Czech Republic
Veřtát, Jakub ; Pertold, Filip (advisor) ; Pintera, Jan (referee)
Most studies examining a mismatch between education and job focus only on vertical mismatch, i.e. the discrepancy between the level of education attained and the level required for a given job. Less attention has been paid to the match between the field of study and job, so-called horizontal mismatch. This thesis explores horizontal mismatch among tertiary-educated workers in the Czech Republic. First, we measure the incidence of horizontal and full mismatch (combination of horizontal and vertical mismatch) between 2005 and 2019. Second, we examine determinants of horizontal mismatch using the binary logit model and full mismatch determinants using the multinomial logit model. We apply two different objective measures of horizontal mismatch. The results suggest that the incidence of horizontal mismatch has slightly decreased since 2005, while the incidence of full mismatch has more than doubled. Among other factors, the field of study significantly affects the likelihood of horizontal and full mismatch. Gender influences only the probability of full mismatch.
Regional Convergence in the European Union: Do the Business Services Make the Difference?
Pintera, Jan ; Baxa, Jaromír (advisor) ; Kopečná, Vědunka (referee)
Despite years of deepening economic integration among the states and regions of the European Union, empirical research remains inconclusive about speed of convergence across regions, if not its existence. This thesis provides novel evidence on convergence in the EU while focusing on development at regional level after the Great Recession. It uses recently developed log t convergence test by Phillips and Sul (2007). Our findings speak against the convergence in level of income per capita among the European regions and give us five clubs of regions converging in their income growth rates instead. Investigating further the geographical distribution of the convergence clubs, we confirm high inequality within the member states and find large continuous area of high convergence clubs in the urbanized part of Western Europe. Furthermore, we investigated the determinants of convergence club membership using Logistic Regression. The main explanatory variable of interest were Business Services (BS), a dynamic sector of the economy with presumably strong positive effect on regional innovative potential. We found positive effect of BS on membership in higher convergence clubs. Yet, this effect seems to diminish for the very highest club.
Different Social and Economic Strategies Taken in Spring 2020 in Response to the Covid-19 Pandemic and Their Medium-term Economic Consequences across the EU Countries
Stuchlík, Jan ; Pertold-Gebicka, Barbara (advisor) ; Pintera, Jan (referee)
This thesis describes measures taken by the EU countries during spring 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and explains the effects of these measures on unemployment and economic growth using panel data regression analysis. We compare different approaches of the countries. Most of the restrictions caused unemployment to increase and economic growth to decrease. The effects on unemployment were often delayed for up to three months. Bans on in- door events, stay-at-home recommendations and closures of non-essential shops had the largest negative effects on employment in the EU. Closures of primary schools, closures of accommodation facilities and bans on indoor events had the biggest negative effects on GDP growth. The changes in economic growth were not directly proportional to the number of people infected by COVID-19. Countries that imposed wide restrictions were not proven to suffer from larger economic losses than countries introducing less strict interventions. 1

Indirect Rule and postcolonial development in former British African colonies
Pintera, Jan ; Kochan, Jan (advisor) ; Havlová, Radka (referee)
The thesis deals with an indirect rule in colonial Africa, namely with this type of management of the indigenous population in British African colonies. The thesis focuses on finding connections between this form of colonial management and post-colonial development of selected British colonies. The main goal is to determine what effect had the indirect rule on postcolonial development in these countries. For this purpose, the thesis uses regression analysis and study of scholarly literature. The thesis concludes that the indirect rule has negative effect on post-colonial development and outlines other factors that could either strengthen or weaken this effect.
