Smrž, Pavel ; Picková, Dana (advisor) ; Švec, Luboš (referee) ; Voloshchuk, Myroslav (referee)
SMRŽ, Pavel, The Trade Relations between the Hanseatic League, Livonia, Veliky Novgorod and Pskov from the 12th to the early 16th Century Abstract The thesis examines the historical dynamics of interactions between the Livonian state and the Hanseatic League on one side and their eastern counterparts, the cities of Novgorod and Pskov, on the other. The study's temporal scope spans from the 12th century to the early 16th century, respectively through the year 1503. During the 12th century, merchants hailing from Scandinavia and northern German regions initiated initial engagements with medieval Russia and the final treaty, dating from the era of Grand Prince of Moscow Ivan III, was ratified in 1503. This ruler, on one hand, definitively put an end to the political autonomy of Veliky Novgorod, and on the other hand, strengthened the ties between Pskov and Moscow, thereby significantly altering the political conditions in which the two cities coexisted with their Livonian neighbours and trade partners for three centuries. The author set several objectives in addressing the chosen topic. One of them was to, through content analysis of extensive source material, particularly diplomatic treaty texts, explain how the practical dynamics of relations between Novgorod, Pskov, and their Livonian partners operated, how...

Pastuszek, Ján ; Picková, Dana (advisor) ; Drška, Václav (referee)
- 1 - Abstract: Zawisza Czarny of Garbów was not only among elite warriors and tournament fighters but also among prominent and respected diplomats of his time. His versatile services were used by two significant Central European rulers - Vladislav II Jagiellon and Sigismund of Luxembourg. The aim of this thesis is to explain and characterize the activities of Zawisza of Garbów alongside Sigismund of Luxembourg, a topic that historiography has only addressed in a general manner. The starting point is the results of previous research.. The thesis focuses on the study of sources, especially narrative and documentary ones, as well as their analysis and comparison. Individual episodes from the life of Zawisza of Garbów associated with Sigismund of Luxembourg are placed within the broader context of the political developments in the countries of Central Europe, particularly the Kingdoms of Poland and Hungary, their mutual relations, and the political activities of King Sigismund of Luxembourg. Another aspect of the thesis is dedicated to contemporary social phenomena, such as the phenomenon of chivalry. Last but not least, the thesis attempts to answer the question of the mutual relationship between the ruler and his prominent knight and its reflection in later tradition.
The Province of Gallaecia during the Reign of Suebi and Visigoths: Transformation of Society between Antiquity and the Middle Ages
Mestek, Oto ; Picková, Dana (referee)
During the reforms of emperors Diocletian and Constantine the Great, the new Roman province of Gallaecia was created at the turn the 3rd and 4th centuries located at the northwestern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. In 411 it was seized by the barbarian tribes of the Suebi and the Hasdingi and the Roman government lost control of it. While the Hasdingi left, the Suebi created their own kingdom in the province. Their kings and warriors played essential role in the transformation of the province during the period which we consider to be the transition from the classical antiquity to the Middle Ages. The Suebic kings, after converting to orthodox Christianity, managed to reorganize the Galician episcopal structure and allowed their country to continue the Roman Mediterranean trade. Subsequently, in 585, Suebic Gallaecia was conquered by the Visigothic king Leovigild and incorporated as a province into his kingdom. Gallaecie thus traces the Visigothic period which lasted there until the arrival of the Arabs. This thesis seeks to capture and describe the regional transformation during this transitional period. It traces the political, social, and economic development of Gallaecia during the era of the Suebic and Visigothic kings.
The analysis of correspondence between the tsar Ivan IV the Terrible and the Prince Andrej Kurbskij
Brůha, Petr ; Stellner, František (advisor) ; Picková, Dana (referee)
In my study I tried to reveal the subject-matter of the correspondence between the tsar Ivan IV the Terrible and the prince Andrej Kurbskij considering historical relations in the easterneuropian region in the second third of 16th century. Together with the content of each single letter I focused on the scope and the overall course of this correspondence, even the scientifical controversy about its credibility. Except the main topic, this study contains a historical introduction with the information about both authors and about evolution of the relationship between the tsar and russian nobility. Influenced by tsar`s and prince`s different views on the same events, there are some issues to be found in the correspondence and I attempted to compare them with more or less succces. The conclusion contains the results arising from the bibliography or straight from the correspondence.

In this paper I will be comparing tree chronicles from times of Edward IV. They are Chronicle of abbey Croyland, Historia Anglica by Polydore Vergil and The London Chronicles. My attention is concentrated on construction of image of King Henry VI. and Edward IV., reasons of similarities and differences between description of affairs - influence by political currents, extension of interests, education of author and his personal motivations. Chronicle of abbey Croyland is monastic chronicle, which author is a member of Edward IV.`s court. Polydore Vergil is humanistic scholar, who wrote on comission of Henry VII., Tudor reinterpretation of history of England. Author of The London Chronicles was Robert Fabyan, alderman of London and leader of draper`s guild. From differences and similarities of their interpretation of common affairs I will criticize possibilities of work with their chronicles

Kovaříková, Šárka ; Drška, Václav (advisor) ; Picková, Dana (referee)
King Edward I reigned in England for thirty five years. The authors of medieval chronicles speak about him as magnificent ruler, capable warrior and politician. Modern historians write about many problems and wars he had to resolve or win, mostly with success. England of Edward I had two more outer parts - Wales and Ireland. Wales was divided among powerfull barons who had to perform homagium to English kings. Between 1272 and 1307 there were three rebelions led by native princes. After last of them, in 1292, Wales was finaly conquered by English. Ireland was supposed to be firmly in English hands; Edward never visited the country nor had to send army to it. In the thirteenth century there were two kingdoms on the British Isles - England and Scotland. English kings tried to obtain influential position in the northern realm; Scottish kings had to perform homagium to them. Question is whether this was for Scotland or only for lands which Scottish kings held in England. In 1290 the dynasty of Scottish kings died out and Edward I took the opportunity. He chose new ruler and after John Balliol failed in his duties to England, Edward entered Scotland with army. The campaigns, thanks to resist in the northern part of the kingdom, continued until the end of Edward's reign. Scotland was never fully conquered. The...

Travelling to the Near East at the Turn of the Middle Ages and Modern Period Vedoucí
Homolka, Vojtěch ; Picková, Dana (advisor) ; Bláhová, Marie (referee)
The main goal of this thesis is to analyse everyday aspects of travels to the Near East at the turn of the Middle Ages and early modern period. The emphasis of my research project is, in particular, possibilities and customs of obtaining food, hygiene, lodgings, ways of spending of a leisure time, perils and the relationship of travellers to natives. I drew information primarily from the itineraries of Czech, German and Italian Jewish pilgrims, who undertook pilgrimages to the Holy Land between 1470 and 1550. From fragmentary mentions of individual authors I try to create a comprehensive mosaic about the selected aspects of pilgrimages, which I compared then with the everyday life of noblemen and burghers around 1500. I try to catch differences in the behaviour of Christian and Jewish pilgrims and to draw attention to gradual changes in the course of the sixteenth century. Pilgrims had to face an unusual composition of their diet during travels to the Near East and often to settle for lower portions and narrower diversity of their dishes. On the other hand they kept at their disposal a better selection of salt water fish or subtropical fruits. By keeping various hygienic habits pilgrims tried to prevent illnesses, which could cause death in some cases. Sleeping on an overseas ship or in oriental...

Ženka, Oldřich ; Drška, Václav (advisor) ; Picková, Dana (referee)
This work is focused on the period of the faU of the Frank empire in the 9th cen tury and on the role of the tribal duchies, which is demonstrated on the example of Bavaria. The author analyzes the most relevant contemporary narative resources of this period in order to characterize their terminology and conception of the empire. A portrait of Bavaria is icorporated into this wide scheme in an effort to demonstrate its local specificity, its close affinity to the ruling house and other concomitants of this phenomenon. The work also puts down an accent on the rising importance of aristocracy in the empire and in the Bavarian duchy, because this social class had to become the key player in policy of the 10th cen tury in the future German territory.
