Járová, Hana ; Novotný, Josef (advisor) ; Kabrda, Jan (referee)

Globalization, military power and the state
Fendrych, Luboš ; Novotný, Josef (advisor) ; Riegl, Martin (referee)
The diploma thesis aims to verify the validity of neorealism, institutional neoliberalism, and critical geopolitics about consequences of the economic globalization for the structure of Finnish and Swedish defence forces. For this purporse, the author primary used the method of congruence. The next step led to the comparison of congruence between observance implications and theories predictions. Based on the results of the Finnish defence forces, the theory of neorealism was confirmed because there is no significant shift in the scope/structure of defence forces in the favor of expeditionary/reconnaissance units. Moreover, there is no evidence to waive the balance of power reasoning even in the geopolitically-low-intesive region. Last but not least, it was shown that difference between the Finnish and Swedish geografic location is one of the key factor for its distinct approach towards potentional threats and instruments how to resolve them. Key words: economic globalization, security, defence forces, Finland, Sweden
Imaginative geographies of developing world: an analysis of practices in Czech geographic and travel magazines
Winkler, Petr ; Novotný, Josef (advisor) ; Baštář Leichtová, Magdalena (referee)
This study is concerned with the role of contemporary Czech geographic and travel writing and its involvement with the creation and reproduction of spatialised identities and imaginative geographies as they relate to the 'developing world'. It employs the method of discourse analysis (mostly research tools taken from Critical Discourse Analysis) to examine the contents of articles from all issues of the magazines Koktejl and Lidé a Země for the year 2012. This is done in order to analyse the portrayals of such spaces within the context of imaginative geography and the post-development critique and bring attention to the kind of popular geopolitics that is being created. The main topics covered includes the construction of identity between the authors, readers and the objects of writing, the linear understanding of the flow of history and progress and the relationship between the writers and their objects (both places and people). The main findings of the research consist in the identification of the continued prevalence of the perception of linearity of history which constitutes the developing places as subjected to a universal historical process whith the European civilisation as the current endpoint of history. These places are therefore considered a legitimate domain of knowledge, appreciation...
Welfare state in developing countries: Case study of Botswana, Ghana and India
Šanc, Filip ; Novotný, Josef (advisor) ; Matoušek, Roman (referee)
This diploma thesis explores the emergence of the welfare state in developing countries, in particular shown on the example of Botswana, Ghana and India. The inquiry is focused on the period beginning in 1990, when the neoliberal paradigm was dominating, untill 2010. The recent years are in token of the shift from the neoliberalism to the post-neoliberalism characterized by a number of concepts, which are taking into account. The common feature of these concepts is the diversion from the narrow focus on GDP, as the only indicator of the growth, to the social dimension of the development. This shift is also being distinguished as a transition from the basic-needs concept to the rights-based approach. Therefore, the thesis explores, if these shifts are remarkable in the analyzed countries, eventually, if there are any divergences as compared to the theoretical concepts. To achieve this goal, a broader analysis of the welfare state was used, which involves social, health and education policy. Based on this analysis, the diploma thesis tries to classify the analyzed countries into the welfare state typology; eventually, in case such classification is impossible, it describes the weaknesses of this welfare state the typology. Examination of international division of labor using a network analysis
Skyva, Jan ; Novotný, Josef (advisor) ; Čadil, Vladislav (referee)
The objective of this study is to analyze and to examine the international division of labor using a network analysis. The system is evaluated by similarity matrix of countries on the basic of industry specialization. In the first part the hypothesis presumes the existence of steady clusters of countries. Results find four clusters but the system of the international division of labor is more complicated for simple clustering. The second part is asked, whether similarity matrix of export bases gravitates to convergence or divergence. Results say - on the one hand it tends to convergence within developed countries, on the other hand from global view it tends to polarization of relative similar and relative dissimilar countries. Keywords: International division of labor, Network analysis, Industry specialization
