Brno Connectivity / Brno Democratic City
Vašková, Vendula ; Hrivňáková, Klára (referee) ; Nový, Vítězslav (advisor)
Living in a city means living with other people. We share streets, squares, and parks. When we come home, we become individualists. The concept is based on connectivity. The project focuses on connecting people, it blurs the boundaries between public and private space. The project aims to redefine the connection between public and private space. I work with this approach in both outdoor and indoor spaces. I create a sequence of several interconnected spaces that will lead the residents from the busy city to the privacy of their rooms. The project focuses on the design of community housing. Neighbors don't share a place, they share a life.

Being on the border between two different social and economical classes, this location is often looked down upon. However change the perspective slightly and it becomes an opportunity to integrate two contrasting communities. Therefore I‘m designing a space which blends different characters together. A green Oasis in the city where everybody feels safe and which encourages them to spend time, inspire one another and discover their potential. This is a place of culture, since everyone knows that sport, music and art are a powerful tools to breakdown social barriers.

The task of the diploma thesis was to find a suitable place in Brno and propose an intervention. An essential part of the design was thinking about the connection between building objects and the people between them. My work deals with social housing. The project stops the existing brownfield at the Cyrilská - Mlýnská intersection near the Vlněna Business Center. The choice of location is not random. In the center of the city, on the border of the new and the old, an opportunity arises for social diversity and the overall connection of different societies.

The conceptual-architectural design represents the restoration of the brownfield of wine cellars in Brno- Zábrdovice. It reflects on the possible use of the area, following the direction of the city’s philosophy in the improvement of dysfunctional, abandoned and neglected so-called vague places. It deals with the solution of the renewal of public space, the trend of urban interventions and brings to the owner a direct way of opening up the area of the currently unused space above the wine cellars. The restoration proposal responds to the historical context of the area, the continuity of the environment. Its main role is to bring an attractive public space to the site, with the added value of opening up the wine cellars and the opportunity to create a natural setting for the site, and bringing the proverbial genius loci to the site. The second part of the conceptual-architectural design provides detailed procedures, use and discussion of the functional program of the different parts of the proposal. The analytical-volumetric reflection formed the basis for this, which resulted in the site program. By organizing programmes, the ideas of the functioning of the functional fillings and their deployment in synergy with each other, a primary space was created with the possibilities of their year-round, but also seasonal use.

The master thesis deals with the design of urban rehabilitation spa in the centre of Brno. The main idea of the design is to create a quiet oasis full of relaxation and health in the busy city centre. I have created the oasis on the border of Brno-Zábrdovice and Brno-centrum. Zábrdovice is a new development area in Brno, where many residential complexes are currently being constructed. This means that new families, students and other social and age groups will start moving to this location. Oasis is defined as a quiet and peaceful place in the middle of something hostile and disturbing. It is typically accompanied by a blanket of pleasant greenery, a sense of rest and a source of water. In my case, I'm inserting a spa with a rehabilitation wing that offers hydrotherapy and other pool amenities into the bustling centre of Brno. My aim was to offer all people the same feeling of safety and relaxation in a watery and naturally green environment. The spa is also a place where people come together for an experience. To enjoy the environment, the materials and simply to take a break from the everyday hustle and bustle.

City. The main centre of all human activity, whose architecture reflects the art and maturity of its inhabitants and the values of the society in which it was founded. There are countless approaches and theories on how a proper city should look and function. Jan Gehl wrote: "A good city is in many ways like a good party: the guests stay because they are having fun." But is it as simple as that? And what keeps us from enjoying our city and having fun in its streets? In my master thesis I decided to look at the subject of urban space from a slightly different angle than usual, and through the potential of small interventions to try to encourage life between buildings.

A new public space for everyone. high line in Brno Imagine you are in the future. In the year around 2030. The main railway station has been moved away. You walk from the city centre and in the place of the current unfriendly main train station you pass through tree alleys and the first tower of the high line is just in front of you. The original train track is revitalised with greenery and you can walk high above street level, safe from cars, and you enter the brand new Spitalka district. You can see the city with its street life from a different perspective. The High Line is designed for everyone. There are cyclists, pedestrians, people on roller skates, mothers with strollers, joggers, it's a safe place for everyone. It doesn't just create a pedestrian link from point A to point B. It offers multiple connections and the opportunity to hang out and sit in the greenery on the high line and look out onto the streets. At the viewpoints you can go even higher, to observe the city, to see the landmark of St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in the background and to overlook the whole high line in the greenery. What more? The heart of the high line is the little square with the amphitheater and the circular oasis. The oasis creates its own safe world. It is the culmination of the entire connectivity of the high line. Connecting people in a circle.

The bachelor's thesis deals with the design of a new town hall for Staré Brno on the Mendlovo square with urbanism defined by the territorial study of New Mendlovo square after the important change in the concept of transport. Thanks to the new transport concept, space is freed up in the very center of Mendlovo square. Tram traffic is diverted to the location behind the Gymnasium. And so the traffic loop that is currently on the site will be removed. We have the opportunity to return the square of the First Republic. As few of our fellow citizens remember him from the beginning and first half of the 20th century. It is about searching for shape and ideal mass and internal layout within this public institution, which should become a city within a city in itself for the 21st century. An effort to leave the survival of the town hall as we know it from the 20th century and try a new concept within social, spatial and visual connectivity. The first part of the work contains analyzes of the territory and the conclusions obtained from them. The theory is followed by the project concept. The details are discussed in the architectural solution. The building construction section clarifies the design by describing the construction and construction details.

The proposal provides for the construction of an adjacent block of špalíček and the use of the created foreign area, which will serve as a new square. The purpose of the entire project is to connect administrative matters with the ordinary life of the citizen. In the first part of the work, an analysis of the territory is carried out, which serves as the basic for the proposal itself. The town hall's proposal itself is resolved in the further parts.

The bachelor's thesis deals with the design of the town hall in the center of Old Brno, on Mendel Square. The work is based on the situation of the new urban concept of Mendel Square, which is part of the assignment. The goal is to design an office for Old Brno on the theme of connectivity/democratic city on a predetermined parcel that replaces the tram loop. The town hall shouldn't just be a boring, cluttered space that closes out of office hours, it should be open to people. It should connect and offer different ways of use. The purpose of the project is to revive Mendel Square and to find ways to connect the concepts of town hall/connectivity/democratic city and create a pleasant space for officials and visitors.
