The Evaluation of the Justice and Development Party's (AKP) approach to the EU
Polách, Vladislav ; Najšlová, Lucia (advisor) ; Weiss, Tomáš (referee)
The main aim of this diploma thesis is to evaluate the attitude of Justice and Development party (AKP) towards the European Union (EU). Moravcsik's Theory of Liberal Intergovernmentalism (LI) is used in the thesis for the evaluation. The thesis is divided into four main parts. The first chapter introduces two main theoretical attitudes which deal with process of EU enlargement. These two main approaches are Rational and Constructivist theoretical schools. The basic arguments of these two attitudes are used in several different particular theories. The first theoretical chapter is concluded by empirical limitations of constructivist approach in a case of the Eastern Enlargement. The second chapter is devoted to methodology. It justifies selection of the LI theory as well as selects main dependent and independent variables. Two other chapters pursue empirical part of the thesis while they reflect the logic of the LI theory. The empirical chapter focuses on Turkish domestic politics, especially on the AKP's position within this sphere. Rational behavior of AKP representatives is evaluated in the very first part of this chapter. Two other subchapters are devoted to the interconnection among the AKP and Turkish business interest groups and Turkish public opinion as well as their stance towards the EU....
The Justice and Development Party and the European Union: Analysis of the interest in joining the EU
Vaňousová, Daniela ; Aslan, Emil (advisor) ; Najšlová, Lucia (referee)
This thesis aims to answer the question why did Turkish ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) dropped the consistent reform initiative and effort to ensure fulfillment of EU entry criteria after starting accession negotiations in 2005. To answer this question the paper analyses the interest of AKP in EU accession. The causes of interest in the EU are examined firstly and then it is focused on the reasons responsible for the loss of interest. The paper demonstrates that the transformation of interest of the ruling party in EU accession was influenced by the combination of two factors. The first factor was the lack of credibility of the accession negotiations with the EU and the ensuing improbability of membership. The second factor was the consolidation of the AKP political power. With respect to the nature of the AKP original interest in the integration of Turkey into the EU, the thesis concludes that the interest depended on the necessity of the accession process for domestic political purposes of ruling party. Afterwards the party achieved its objective, which was to get rid of opponents and secure their position in the Turkish political system, the AKP had no reason to try to meet all requirements of the European Union, given the unlikely outcome of accession negotiations.
European Union - A Normative Power? Testing European Neighbourhood Policy in the Mediterranean
Strýčková, Katarína ; Weiss, Tomáš (advisor) ; Najšlová, Lucia (referee)
Normative Power Europe theory presented by Ian Manners defines the European Union as a normative actor in international relations. According to him, EU's ability to change what passes for "normal" in international relations originates from its internal set-up which the EU uses to shape its environment and international norms in its own image. After first studying Manner's tripartite analysis and defining normative goals, means and impact of the normative policy, the thesis then proceeds to test normative theory in the European neighbourhood, particularly in the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, by analysing EU's democracy and human rights promotion in Tunisia. It identifies discrepancy between EU's goals and means and discovers that on the one side, Euro-Mediterranean cooperation improves socio-economic development, however on the other it impedes the political one. This finding reflects incoherence and inconsistency of the EU's policies in the Mediterranean and arrives to the conclusion that EU is not a normative power in its neighbourhood policy.
European Union development policy and the emergence of new donors in the area of international development cooperation - the case of Mexico
Vorzová, Karolina ; Weiss, Tomáš (advisor) ; Najšlová, Lucia (referee)
This diploma thesis focuses on the development policy of the European Union in regards to its relationship to new donors. EU is the main provider of the official development cooperation worldwide with 55% of total ODA. Thus, the EU is a key player that is strongly influenced by the changes the international environment has been going through. The reasons for such changes in the established structure must be viewed from the perspective of the emerging donor entering the field of international development cooperation. These donors are mainly cooperating with public and private agencies from middle income countries that have undergone recent and significant economic growth and thus are seeking ways to strengthen their influence in the international environment. Providing development assistance is one possibility which exists. Despite the fact that many of new donors are still the recipients of ODA they have come with ambitious plans of providing aid to less developed countries. The main aim of this diploma thesis is to focus on the selected example of a new donor, namely Mexico, as a case study to respond to the research question: Does the EU react to the emergence of new donors in the field of international development cooperation? If so, how can the response be classified - is it a positive...
Turkey - EU Relations in the shade of the Middle East : The Arab Spring - Is it an inception of a rupture between Turkey and the West?
Karana, Elçin Sabahat ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (advisor) ; Najšlová, Lucia (referee)
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate and describe the effects of the Middle East policies of Turkey and the European Union on mutual relations between the two actors with particular focus on the Arab Spring and its repercussions on regional stability and international relations. The key components of Turkey's foreign policy are analyzed from the perspectives of EU-Turkey relations and political stances of Turkey and the European Union towards the Middle East. Analysis of Turkey's and the EU's responses to the uprisings and their impact on the situation in the region is an important part of the study. The conclusions of this study confirm that the strategic cooperation between the EU and Turkey and the necessity of compensating each other's relative weaknesses in order to achieve similar foreign policy goals in the concerned region after the Arab Spring led to a rapprochement between the two actors. However, a direct influence of this rapprochement on the negotiation process regarding the future Turkish membership in the EU has not yet been observed. Key words Turkey, the European Union, Turkey-EU relations, negotiation process, the Middle East, MENA, foreign politics, the Arab Spring…
Turkish membership in the EU: French, German and British Perspectives
Dražilová, Dominika ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (advisor) ; Najšlová, Lucia (referee)
The accession of Turkey to the EU has become one of the major unresolved issues of European integration and leads directly into bigger debates about the underpinnings and purpose of the EU. Should Turkey be a Member State with full rights or be connected to the through a yet undefined special relationship? That is the kind of question many are asking nowadays. Every Member State of the European Union has a different vision of Europe, with different views of how the Union should be defined and on what foundations it should be based. This work explores the relationship between the concept of Europe held by a country's political elite, through analysing its discourse, and the country's position towards Turkish EU membership. Three cases are presented: France, Germany and the United Kingdom.
Czech non-governmental organisations and EU climate change policy
Stuchlíková, Zuzana ; Najšlová, Lucia (advisor) ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (referee)
The thesis aims to analyse the relations of non-governmental organisations towards the European integration process, which creates an additional platform for their interest representation. This case study focuses on how Czech non-profit organisations, which are dealing in long term with the topic of climate change, try to use the instruments and channels available at the EU level to promote their idea of the 2030 Climate and Energy Framework targets and how the EU climate action policy translates to their understanding of the topic. The thesis is based on the Europeanization theory that assumes that non-state actors are adjusting their behaviour to the existence of another platform of decision making and interest representation. I, therefore, assume, that the selected sample of Czech ecological NGOs tries to actively use the opportunity to participate in the EU decision making - especially because a climate policy is decided mostly at the EU level and therefore the outcomes, such as the 2030 Framework, present another tool to achieve change in the climate policy of the Czech Republic. I conclude that from the perspective of selected NGOs the European climate policy is perceived as an important driver behind the development in this field in both Czech Republic and global negotiations - even though...
