Use of Sense Relations in Expressing Language Humour: TV Series Analysis

This bachelor thesis focuses on sense relations, the syntagmatic and the paradigmatic axis, and their use in expressing language humour. The analysis was carried out in a corpus extracted from the TV series Friends and How I Met Your Mother. It strives to answer the question whether the sitcoms display the same number of comical incidences both in the first and the last season. Furthermore, it sheds some light on the linguistic realizations employed and the way they operate to trigger laughter. Finally, the thesis provides an insight into the universal tendencies of humour realizations and their reflection in the amassed data.
Voice of a Woman in Three Versions of Pygmalion: Sociolinguistic Analysis

This diploma thesis focuses on the sociolinguistic analysis of the language of female characters in a play, musical and film. The theoretical part summarizes sociolinguistic literature and it also scrutinizes the current findings of the influence of gender, social class and identity on language. These concepts are discussed both from linguistic and sociological point of view. The practical part is aimed at the analysis of woman's language in George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion and its two adaptations, the musical My Fair Lady and the film Pretty Woman. It deals with the change of the main characters that become representatives of upper social class. The change is discussed diachronically in terms of language, especially pronunciation, lexis, grammar and style, but also in terms of identity and social class.
Linguistic analysis of on-line advertising in English

This thesis presents a linguistic analysis of on-line advertising in English. A corpus of 150 advertisements was divided into three thematically distinct categories: non-commercial advertising, advertising of alcohol and cigarettes, and unspecified advertising of various products. Then, the examination and identification of the linguistic features and rhetorical figures was carried out. The theoretical part deals with the concept of advertising and the most frequent linguistic devices employed in slogans. The practical part aims to statistically describe the most commonly used linguistic means in advertising slogans in relation to the thematic domain they come from, as well as to reveal the connection between the use of advertising language and advertising objectives. Interpersonal Multiple Intelligence and Its Development in B2 English Lessons

The diploma thesis "Interpersonal Multiple Intelligence and Its Development in B2 English Lessons" focuses on Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences with special emphasis on interpersonal multiple intelligence. The thesis consists of two main sections: theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part introduces the concept of intelligence, the theory of multiple intelligences and interpersonal intelligence. The practical part introduces the research that investigates whether, how and to what extent interpersonal intelligence is developed in B2 English lessons. It consists of two parts: the main part discusses the content analysis of two course books and the second part of the research - the questionnaire - complements findings of the content analysis.
Teaching Differences between British and American English in Lower-secondary EFL Classes

Presented thesis deals with teaching differences between British and American English. Its aim is to suggest a suitable way of teaching selected vocabulary differences between these two English varieties in EFL classes. The theoretical part of the presented thesis summarizes the knowledge background gained by studying relevant researches and professional publications. On that study the author's original teaching materials are based. The practical part consists of a brief research; original materials were used in five EFL classes, and consequently their efficiency and utility was examined. The main goal of this thesis is to propose this topic as a kind of useful enrichment of English lessons and to examine the way it could be included in a lesson plan without affecting it or burdening teachers with an extra preparation. Perception of the English Vowel Schwa by Czech Learners

This thesis deals with the perception of English vowels by Czech listeners with special focus on the mid-central vowel schwa. The theoretical part presents the current research findings in the area of cross-language speech perception as well as it explores the differences between Czech and English vocalic systems. Further, it focuses on the negative transfer from the mother tongue. The aim of the practical part is to examine the impact of the Czech sound system on the discrimination of the neutral vowel schwa in different positions using a perception test devised specifically for the purposes of this research. The results indicate that the students' perception is influenced quite strongly by their native language as successful schwa identification occurred in approximately fifty per cent of all examined cases.
Language and Ageing - On the Role of Second Language in Cognitive Training in People with Dementia

The thesis explores the influence of cognitive training carried out in a second language on the elderly suffering from dementia. Having described the basic anatomy of the nervous system, neurolinguistic theories as well as ageing and having dealt with cognitive aspects in relation to language learning, the thesis aims at performing an experiment that should help dementia clients to broaden their vocabulary in a second language. This is to be achieved through individual therapy- like units using worksheets created specifically for these purposes. The results indicate that cognitive training in a second language is beneficial to dementia clients and could be used more extensively. Image of British Culture in ESOL Textbooks

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the image of British culture in selected ESOL textbooks by evaluating the amount of content associated with it. The objectives are to discover the extent into which the culture is implemented in the selected sample - New English File series - as well as the series' focus on either elite Culture involving the great products of civilisation or culture in terms of behaviours, beliefs, and life patterns, and what the balance of its forms of representation is. Two major intertwined parts are covered within this paper: a specialist literature review and a content analysis, where the latter builds upon the theoretical background established in the former.
