The Contemporary Meaning of Christmas Celebration.

This master's thesis focuses on Christmas celebration, the phenomenon which has been the key issue approached by ethnographers since the national revival. Combining semiotic and ethnographic methods, it examines the general semiotics (the first part), analyses the contemporary research on Christmas (the second part), and provides the qualitative research of this celebration.

Svou pozornost jsem v této diplomové práci zaměřila na oblast masopustních a karnevalových tradic. Zajímal mne především samotný obsah a původ těchto obyčejt1, který je velmi široký a nabízí velké množství přístupů a způsobú zpracování. O jejich přiblížení jsem se pokusila v první teoretické části diplomové práce. Na základě odborné literatury z oblasti antropologie, sociologie, etnologie a folkloristiky či teorie kultury a literární teorie jsem se snažila ukázat nejen púvod a kořeny těchto zvykll, ale i základní principy a aspekty masopustních pruvodiL Především j sem zdůraznila motiv svátečnosti, jenž je důležitým atributem těchto rituálú, velký akcent jsem kladla na herní principy a dúležitou roli smíchové kultury pro rozvíjení masopustní tradice od dob středověku, zároveň jsem poukázala na společenskou funkci těchto obyčejú, spočívající v upevnění a posílení vzájemných mezilidských vztahl!. V teoretické části jsem se dále zabývala masopustními obchúzkami voblasti Čech a Moravy. Snažila jsem se vykreslit jejich historii, pruběh a popsat tradiční masky, které se na našem území nejčastěji objevovaly či stále objevují. Teoretické poznatky jsem se posléze pokusila uplatnit na konkrétním příkladě masopustních pruvodiL Volila jsem oblast Pošumaví, především jsem se zaměřila na obce Hrádek u Sušice a Mokro...

"On the land". The original inhabitants of the north from the point of view of ecological anthropology

Work is concerned with possibility of the application of ethnology and landscape ecology methods in protection of the ethno-ecological landscape stability and landscape planning in the area of northwest Siberia. Valuable experiences were acquired from mapping in region northern Canada and on the basis of author's research in three northern regions (Sverdlovsk region, Jamalo-Nenets autonomous region, Russia and NWT, Canada). These regions are inhabited by original population in conditions of landscape balance threatened by outer factor. These conditions require to design feasible method of landscape ethno-ecological mapping and planning for region of the north-western Siberia.

The Benuaq funeral rituals

The subject of the dissertation thesis presented is the Dayak Benuaq and their funeral rituals in relation to their individual and collective identity. The aim of the thesis is to try to find an answer to the question "what role does a ritual play in creating, maintaining or changing objectivized reality and social relations and how can a ritual help in the case of group crisis inflicted by internal or external causes". And the last question studied is the role of a ritual in defining and presenting collective identity of a social group. This work first focuses on brief history of the Dayak in relation to their ethnic identity and burial rituals serving as an introduction to the socio-cultural context of the Benuaq. Subsequently, a description of secondary burial rituals of the Benuaq Idatn is presented. The task of the third part of this thesis is to try to find out how a ritual serves as an element of construction of social reality and individual and collective identity using Berger's and Luckmann's approach as a tool.
