Methodology of Assessment of Load of Indoor Environment of Archives and Libraries by Dust Particles.
Mašková, Ludmila ; Smolík, Jiří ; Ondráček, Jakub
The aim of the methodology was development of evaluation methods for indoor air quality in archives and libraries. For this reason a simple passive sampler for dust deposition was developed. For detailed analyse a new aerosol spectrometer was constructed. These measurements should be completed by chemical analyse of particles and than the influence to materials can be estimated.\n

Methodology of Assessment of Load of Indoor Environment of Archives and Libraries by Dust Particles.
Mašková, Ludmila ; Smolík, Jiří ; Ondráček, Jakub
The aim of the methodology was development of evaluation methods for indoor air quality in archives and libraries, targeted at reduction of damages on library and archival collections caused by adverse effects of environment. For this reason a set of procedures and tools of advanced monitoring of the indoor air quality was developed. The purpose of this methodology was to evaluate load by dust particles, describe the relationship between the indoor and outdoor environments, and identify indoor sources of pollution.

The Effect of Indoor Particles on Cellulose Degradation
Mašková, Ludmila ; Bartl, B. ; Smolík, Jiří ; Vodička, Petr
Indoor air pollution in libraries and archives can be harmful to paper-based materials stored there. Adverse effects caused by gaseous pollutants are well described, but less is known about airborne particles. The discussion regarding this issue mostly concerned the soiling of the paper, the possibility of surface abrasion or microbiological infestation (Hatchfield, 2002), but studies about the effect of particulate matter (PM) composition are scarce. This work was focused on the changes in the properties of cellulose-based paper caused by different size-resolved chemical components of PM.

The Methodology of Evaluation of Air Quality Effect on Library and Archival Collections
Mašková, Ludmila ; Smolík, Jiří ; Ondráček, Jakub ; Součková, M. ; Paulusová, H. ; Bartl, B. ; Benešová, M. ; Ďurovič, M.
The aim of the project was a development of evaluation method for indoor air quality in libraries and archives, targeted at reduction of damages on archival collections caused by adverse effects of environment. The project included indoor/outdoor monitoring of particulate matter and gaseous pollutants at four libraries and archives representing different outdoor environments: Zlatá Koruna (rural area), Třeboň (small town), Teplice (industrial area), and Prague (large city). The adverse effects of deteriorated environment were studied by comparison of identical incunabules from these locations. Parallel to field studies the deterioration of paper caused by deposited dust particles was studied at laboratory conditions. In addition different methods of mechanical cleaning of paper were tested. Based on the results precautions reducing the adverse effects of outdoor air pollution were developed.

Methodology of Selection of Means for Mechanical Cleaning of Dust Particles from Paper Surface
Benešová, M. ; Mašková, Ludmila
The aim of this work was to identify methods of mechanical cleaning of dust particles from the paper surface, which are suitable for use in the restoration practice. For this purpose 15 methods of mechanical cleaning were tested. The basic requirement was the applicability of the methodology for the most restorers. Therefore the methodology included only approaches which do not require any special equipment. The results showed that the type of paper has no effect to cleaning results and the main criterion for selection of means of treatment is the extent of soiling.

Characterization of Particulate Matter in Different Archives
Mašková, Ludmila ; Smolík, Jiří ; Vodička, Petr
Indoor air pollution in cultural heritage buildings such as museums, libraries and archives can be harmful for materials stored there. Adverse effects of most of gaseous pollutants are well described (Thomson, 1965), but less is known about airborne particles. Particles cover a wide range of sizes and have a variable composition. These characteristics determine their transport to the surfaces and also possible negative effects (Nazaroff and Cass, 1989).
