Commented translation:Frida Kahlo, 1907-2007, selected chapters

The aim of this thesis is to translate six chapters from the book Frida Kahlo: 1907-2007, which originated under the guidance of the mexican writer Carlos Fuentes, and present a commentary of the translation. The first part the commentary provides a general translation analysis of the original text. The second focuses on translation problems and shifts and their solutions. The last part describes the selected translation method. There is an annex attached, consisting of the original text and the respective painting reproductions.

Rhetorical Figures in the Translation of Political Speeches (the 1970s and 1980s)

The diploma work is divided into two parts - theoretical and practical. The first part is further divided into the theoretical linguistic subsection and theoretical political science subsection. The theoretical linguistic part comprises information on metaphors, metonymies and synecdoches taken from Czech and Spanish linguistic handbooks and is focused on a phenomenon of levelling and it also deals with the function of the aforementioned rhetorical figures. In the first part there is also a chapter on the rhetorical style and translation of rhetorical figures. The second, practical part deals with the analysis of the rhetorical figures in selected political speeches, their function, frequency and possible levelling when translating them into the target language. The analysis is carried out on the basis of a comparable sample of political speeches in the Czech and Spanish languages. They are the speeches of two important personalities of the 1970s, President Ludvík Svoboda's speeches in the Czech language and in terms of the Spanish linguistic background - the speeches of his Chilean counterpart - President Salvador Allende, and their Czech translation. Figures of speech in non-literary translations

The present thesis deals with figures of speech in non-literary texts and with the problems connected to their translation. The first part is dedicated to the theoretical description of figures of speech. First we deal with their definition according to the Czech and Spanish terminology and next we proceed to the figures that can be expected in popular science texts. We deal mainly with metaphors, their classification and opinions of translation scientists about the possibilities of their translation; but we mention also simile, metonymy and synecdoche. The second chapter is dedicated to popular science texts, to the problems connected to their translation, to the presence of metaphors in this type of texts and to their translation. In the second part we describe the analysed texts and the methods used in our work; the third part deals with the results of our analysis. During our analysis we found the same amount of figures of speech in both languages. Metaphors predominate in both languages, but while in Czech they represent the absolute majority of all figures, in Spanish they represent only a half of all the examples. Proper Names as a Potential Indicator of "Strangeness" in Translation of Non-literary Texts

The subject of this thesis is proper names in Czech and Spanish language and proper names in translation from Spanish into Czech. The theoretical part of the thesis comprises of an overview of the current state of investigation in the field both in Czech and in Spanish. In Czech linguistics, onomastics is a comparatively developed discipline. In Spanish, it is mostly grammatical manuals that deal with proper names. In both languages, authors tend to agree on the definition and classification of proper names into anthroponyms, toponyms and chrematonyms; however, Spanish authors usually do not separate chrematonyms as a category under such name. Furthermore, nobody has yet defined or classified the functions of proper names in Spanish language (an action which has already been done for the Czech language). Opinions on the translation of proper names differ to a large degree. Authors recognize proper names as polyfunctional units and agree that their translation (or non-translation) is in large measure conditioned by norms and specific historically conditioned conventions; by the function of the text, text type and genre; by the relationship of the working languages and so on. The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to provide a translation and a commentary of a number of chapters from "Historia de la literatura hispanoamericana", written by the Spanish author Manuel Villar Raso. The first part of the translation commentary will contain a stylistic analysis of the translated text, the second will focus on grammar, syntax and vocabulary used in the original text. The third part will outline the typology of problems that we came across during the translation process. Our main focus is to provide the Czech reader with the most functional translation of the original possible, keeping all stylistic and grammatical norms. The original text can be found in the annex. Expression on interpropsitional relationships inthe translation of art historical texts

The author of this paper focuses on the transfer of interpropositional relations in the translation process of art- historical texts from Spanish into Czech language. When analysing the real, synchronic and representative texts, she applies the descriptive-contrastive approach using both qualitative and quantitative descriptive methods. The emphasis is placed on the genre conventions, interpreted as a determining factor of the compactness of the expression. El objetivo que la autora persigue con este trabajo es el análisis de los medios de expresión de las proposiciones, así como el estudio de los modos en que las relaciones interprosicionales toman cuerpo en ambos idiomas, el checo y el español. Para este fin, la autora aplica método tanto cualitativos como cuantitativos y trabaja con textos reales, sincrónicos y representativos con el objetivo de describir y comparar dichos fenómenos sintáctico-semánticos en ambos idiomas. Ideology, censorship, indirect translations and non-translation: Czech literature in 20th -century Portugal

The present doctoral thesis investigates book translations of Czech and Slovak literature into European Portuguese in 20th -century Portugal. The Introduction gives reasons for choosing the topic, argues for its relevance and outlines the structure of the thesis. It defines the main research question, 'What was the presence of Czech literature translated into European Portuguese in 20th -century Portugal?', and formulates the hypothesis to be tested: 'The translations of Czech literature in 20th century Portugal exhibited a tendency, a pattern.' Chapter 1 attempts to operationalise seven theoretical issues pertinent to Translation Studies in general: (1) ideology, (2) censorship, (3) indirect translations, (4) non- translation, (5) canon and world literature, (6) paratexts, and (7) medium-sized lingua- & socio-cultures. Chapter 2 delineates the research subject, discusses the most important types of sources and materials used and presents the methodology.
