The Role of Greenland and Nunavut in International Relations in 1979-2009
Zettlitzerová, Radka ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (advisor) ; Kozák, Kryštof (referee)
Greenland and Nunavut are territories with a limited measure of autonomy. Greenland obtained it's autonomy when the Greenland Home Rule Act came into effect. Nunavut instead, obtained it's autonomy from the moment it was created in 1999, via the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and the Nunavut Act.. Both Greenland and Nunavut have no authority to interfere with international affairs, but they do have options to get involved via different Inuit organizations (the majority of the population both Greenland and Nunavut are Inuits). This bachelor thesis, Role of Greenland and Nunavut in international relations in 1979 - 2009, aims to find an answer to the possibility of Greenland and Nunavut having an active part in international affairs (based on the documents mentioned above), if they can be considered of subjects of the international law and if some examples of their international involvement even can be mentioned. Even though according to their constitutional acts, niether Greenland nor Nunavut are allowed to act independently in matters of international affairs, the author of this thesis defends the hypothesis that in fact they can, participate in international discussions and even, on a limited scale, decide their own foreign policy. The first part of this thesis introduces a basic geographical,...

Immigrants or Refugees: A New Type of Exodus from Mexico to the United States
Kamal, Tereza ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Toth, Gyorgy (referee)
Apart from trade and drug control, immigration is one of the three major issues affecting U.S. - Mexican relations. The U.S. today has more immigrants from Mexico alone than any other country in the world has from all other countries of the world. The scale of this human movement, the persistence and the large proportion of the unauthorized low skilled migrants, which dominated this flow for decades, make Mexican migration unique. The decision to migrate North has always been driven by economic motives; the prospect of higher wages and a better living standard have been the main push factors, until recently. Since 2007/2008 there has been a significant change in the character of Mexican migration. This can be attributed to several factors influencing the process at once, but the primary reason is the escalation of drug related violence on the Mexican side of the border. The focus of my thesis is to analyze the transformation of Mexican migration since 2007/2008. I argue these years have been a turning point in the dynamics of migration for two reasons. Firstly, in 2007 the American economy turned into recession, which significantly affected the flow of unauthorized migration. Secondly, in 2008 the drug related violence in Mexico spiked dramatically. This had a deterrent effect on the unauthorized...

Lucie Pávková Concept of "Evil" in US Foreign Policy - the Example of George W. Bush Administration The bachelor thesis "Concept of "Evil" in US Foreign Policy - the Example of George W. Bush Administration" deals with the problem of "evil" created by the Bush administration in the period of first presidency of George W. Bush (especially between 2001 - 2004) and influence of the concept of "evil" on the formation of US foreign policy. It is a discursive analysis, which is divided into two parts - the quantitative and the qualitative one. On the basis of most significant speeches of George W. Bush, the quantitative part tries to find out the most important elements of the concept of "evil" and the actors considered "evil" by the Bush administration. These elements and actors are assessed with support of other administration's documents in the qualitative part of the analysis. The last part of the thesis deals with the relation of the new concept of "evil" and the actions in foreign policy led against these "evil" actors. In the first phase (2001 - 2002) the "evil" actors are mainly terrorists, while during the second phase (2002 - 2004), the "evil" actors are considered rogue states defined as Axis of Evil. The most significant elements of the new concept of "evil" are dualistic perception of the...

Sošťáková, Markéta ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Šafařík, Petr (referee)
The bachelor's thesis The American Media's Failure before the Iraq War in 2003 deals with the media's uncritical coverage of the threat posed by Iraqi program of weapons of mass destruction. The thesis analyses American print media coverage in period after the attacks of September 11, 2001 until the beginning of the Iraq War in March 2003. It seeks to determine the cause of this major crisis in the history of American journalism The thesis is divided into three sections. The first part deals with intensive pro-war campaign under the Bush administration in an attempt to achieve political and social consent for the invasion to Iraq. The political marketing campaign consisted of the manipulation of WMD intelligence, escalation of rhetoric about the danger that Iraq posed to the United States and speculations about Iraqi support of terroristic organisations. Mexican Drug Cartels: Dynamics of Supernational Organized Crime
Kristlík, Tomáš ; Smetana, Vít (advisor) ; Kozák, Kryštof (referee)
After the end of the Cold War global security environment changed significantly. Major threat of global nuclear conflict was replaced by a number of less challenging security concerns. One of them is transnational organized crime. The phenomenon of organized crime, traditionally more of an internal security issue of individual states, expanded to global stage taking advantage of new opportunities raised by globalization of international environment. Relative shortage of distances, easier communication and transfer of financial sources, all this contributed to successful upgrade of organized crime to international level. The thesis "Mexican Drug Cartels: Dynamics of Transnational Organized Crime" explores one specific representative of the phenomenon, that is, Mexican drug cartels. The main argument here is that Mexican drug cartels became such a threat for Mexican state sovreignty, because they took the full advantage of opportunities offered by the changing international environment during 1990's and adapted both its vertical and horizontal structure to maximize effectivness of the illicit drug business minimizing potential risks at the same time. In order to secure the operational environment cartels expanded their activities and engaged in arms-trafficking trying to gain means to protect their...
Comprehensive immigration reform suspended: Lessons from the U.S. Senate 2004-2010
Švajda, Michal ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Calda, Miloš (referee)
The M.A. thesis "Comprehensive Immigration Reform Postponed: Lessons from the Senate 2004- 2010" elaborates upon the causes hindering in the years 2004 to 2010 the adoption of a comprehensive immigration reform in the United States of America. The main goal of the thesis is to assess the consequences of the polarization of the American political scene on the immigration reform and to evaluate the party divide on the matter upon the floor remarks made by the members of Senate Committee on the Judiciary taking in account the differences in between the 109th and 111th Senate. The focus on the Committee on the Judiciary is justified by the role played by its members in the drafting process of particular reform proposals. The scope of the polarization of the Committee is assessed upon the aggravated means attributed to the most dominant narratives used by the senators. The remarks used in the evaluation are addressed in the context of the most significant contemporary factors influencing the polarization of American political scene as well as under the light of the development surpassing the domestic affairs.
ObamaCare 2010: political aspects of U.S. healthcare reform
Dujčíková, Katarína ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Calda, Miloš (referee)
ObamaCare 2010: Political Aspects of U.S. Health-care Reform Katarína Dujčíková Abstract The enactment of the comprehensive health-care reform in March 2010 is one of major political achievements of the administration of the 44th president of the United States of America, a Democrat Barack Obama and the 111th Congress with the majority of Democrats in both chambers. Democratic politicians reacted to the need to answer three major problems of American health care system; rising cost, average quality and limited access to standard health care services for million Americans. The historical passage of health-care reform enacted despite unified opposition by Republicans was possible due to the rare combination of favorable conditions, or so-called window of opportunity and legislative tactic, which had to be adopted in order to diffuse opposition and secure enough votes from undecided congressmen. Compromises that had to be made necessarily altered an initial reform proposal. This diploma thesis has focused on two major aims. First, it examines in detail the legislative process of health-care reform, actions of its major players (public, congressional parties, president, and interest groups) as well as its result (the reform bills), which compares to the initial reform proposals of President Obama. The findings...
