The Chamber theatre 1950-1976
Štérová, Dora ; Just, Vladimír (advisor) ; Miholová, Kateřina (referee)
This MA thesis is dedicated to the most important period of work of the Chamber Theater in currently non-existing space in the great hall of the Central Hotel in Hybernska Street, Prague. It was the home of the Cabaret Cervena sedma, and in the twenties of the Orion Movie Theater. Since 1930 the Chamber Theater belonged to the Vinohrady Theater, and in 1950 it became one of the stages of the City Theaters of Prague. During the ,,vinohrady era" the Chamber Theater was intended for generally "lighter" repertory but from half of 1950's until its elimination in 1976 it became an exceptional occurrence in the context of contemporary professional theaters. It managed to effectively fight against political imperatives; it produced such shows as Bulgakov's Escape, Durrenmatt's Physicists, Play Strindberg and Romulus the Great, Sartre's Flies, Kllma'a Jury, Barnes's The Rulling Class even Shakespeare's Richard II. This theater was the birth place of one of the . most famous productions by the director Alfred Radok, Rolland's ·Game of Love and Death. Apart from Radok many other regime-unpopular directors have worked there as well - for example: Karel Dostal and Miroslav Machacek. The repertory of the Chamber Theater can be considered as an example of a precious dramaturgic policy which was balancing on the edge of...

Kunderová, Radka ; Just, Vladimír (advisor) ; Herman, Josef (referee)
This master thesis deals with a so far not explored area - a detailed analysis of the Czech theatre review criticism under the totalitarian communistic regime. The criticism in the magazíne "Divadlo" (1949 - 1970), the main theatre periodical in the fifties (from 1957 together with "Divadelní noviny" ("The Theatre Newspaper")) has been chosen as a sample. The analysis focuses on the year 1953 when the Soviet dictator J. V. Stalin and the Czech president Klement Gottwald died and that is why this year is generally identified with the first liberalization in Czechoslovakia as well as in the other Sovietized states. The aim of the master thesi s was not only to precisely describe the reviews, but also to find out, whether they changed after these fundamental events in the political and social development. The essay consists of two basic parts: the first one handles the historical context, both the social and in the area of theatre, resumes the history of the magazine "Divadlo" and shortly describes the theory and history of social realism unti11953. The second part focuses on the detailed qualitative analysis ofthe texts. The chapters about history show briefly the character of the theatre sphere which hinged on the policy ofthe state and the Communist Party. The magazine "Divadlo" was created one year after...

Ortová, Barbora ; Just, Vladimír (advisor) ; Topolová, Barbara (referee)
This Diploma Thesis documents the remarkable theatrical project directed by Vladimír Morávek - a tetralogy of F. M. Dostoevsky dramatizations, collectively known as One Hundred Years of Cobra and its insertion in the context of other Czech stage productions by Dostoevsky. First, I briefly deal with the F. M. Dostoevsky's dramatizations in general. I am noticing the author's supreme fictional creations, I analyze their prerequisites for dramatizing and I am sketching the main themes of selected dramatizations. Then I am concentrating on the said tetralogy, which was gradually staged during the years 2003 - 2006 in the Brno's Husa na provázku Theatre (Goose on a String Theatre). (Specifically it involded the staging of Raskolnikov - Crime and Punishment, Prince Myshkin - The Idiot, Stavrogin - The Devils and The Brothers Karamazov: Resurrection). First, I am analyzing the concept and ideological line of tetralogy and I am mentioning the unifying elements of all productions. Then I move to the actual productions, which I analyze from the point of view of text and stage poetry. In conclusion I describe the day-long marathon of Stripping from the Skin, through which I summarize the director's intention about the tetralogy as a whole. The Morávek's project has aroused a considerable attention among experts, as...

The end of courage. Kačer's staging of Mother Courage and Her Children in the period and social context
Pitterová, Zuzana ; Just, Vladimír (advisor) ; Jiřík, Jan (referee)
My thesis deals with the play of the German playwright and director Bertold Brecht Mother Courage and her Children, which was introduced in 1970 at the stage of Prague Tyl's Theatre under the direction of Jan Kačer and which became for a long time the last expressing of free theatrical creativity at the National Theatre after the entry of Warsaw Pact troops in the breakthrough year 1968. The performance was an exceptional event in many ways. Not only because of the fact that the life performance of Dana Medřická in the title role was really stunning, but it was also the work of the director who managed to touch in the Brecht's war story from the disorganised Europe in the 17th century the timeless core, which in the concrete political situation of the beginning "normalization" of Czechoslovakia resonated with the audience in an extraordinary way.

Budařová, Jana ; Herman, Josef (advisor) ; Just, Vladimír (referee)
The study analyzes the influence of surrealism on the Czech theatre in the twenties and the thirties of the 20th century. Surrealism is a style in which fantastic visual imagery from the subconscious mind is used with no intention of making the artwork logically comprehensible. Founded by Andre Breton in 1924, it was a primarily European movement which attracted many members of the Dada movement. The Czech Surrealist circle was made up of many of the prominent artists, including Jindřich Štyrský, Jindřich Honzl, Vítězslav Nezval, Karel Teige, František Muzika, Toyen. The study tried to analyze the influence of surrealism on the dramatic art, the direction, plays and scenography and demonstrate how surrealism change the creation of Vítězslav Nezval, František Muzika, Emil František Burian, Jindřich Štyrský and Jindřich Honzl.

This thesis is dealing with the work of the dramaturge, translator and the theatre theorist Karel Kraus (1920 - 2014). The activity of this author is presented gradually with an accent on the chronology and domains of his production, as well as on the most significant subjects in his works. The main purpose of this thesis is to characterize and summarize Kraus's work as a whole unit. And there are primary sources (writings of Kraus) which are used to accomplish this intention. While the unit of Kraus's works is described step by step, we are also getting familiarized with his way of writing and his attitude. The thesis is extended of a supplement which consists of the bibliography of the essays and articles by Karel Kraus in the period from 2000 to 2014.
Jan Neruda, the theater critic
Kášová, Michala ; Topolová, Barbara (advisor) ; Just, Vladimír (referee)
The topic of this bachelor thesis is the theatre critiques and essays of Jan Neruda dedicated to Provisional Theatre, which functioned in the years 1862 - 1883. In the first part of my thesis, I am presenting Neruda's journalistic work, while further I describe the form, style and topics of his critical treatise. I tried to classify his critical works into the social, political and cultural context by using secondary literature and by including selected passages from his critiques. I present significant celebrities of Provisional Theatre, as well as important leading personalities and milestones in the development of this theatre. Neruda dealt thoroughly with practical aspects of staging and he closely observed the acting work. In his critiques he described general acting principles of the late romanticism with occasional realistic tendencies, but he also commented on concrete theatrical and non-theatrical phenomena. His importance lies in the consistent critical observation of the practical theatrical aspects, which he pursued with sustained journalistic regularity and thoroughness. With his theoretic work he helped to achieve the professionalization of the first Czech systematically operating theatre and he portrayed it for future generations.
