Bořil, Vít ; Lepič, Martin (advisor) ; Jelen, Libor (referee)
Symptoms of banal nationalism in the process of ethno-political contestation in the British Isles Abstract This thesis deals with the concept of banal nationalism (Billig 1995) and it's symptoms in Scotland and Wales. The aim of this thesis is to create theoretical and conceptual framework which is necessary for introduction to the study of banal nationalism. This is achieved by systemic review of the relevant literature. A broad spectrum of components of banal nationalism has been identified in Scotland and Wales. The review has found that banal nationalism is most commonly reproduced by the media, such as the daily press. It is also embedded in the landscape and manifests itself in the people's day-to-day lives. The thesis points out ways to identify banal nationalism in political documents, banknotes and postcards. It shows how individual manifestations vary in every region: For example, in Scotland, they tend to come from institutions much more often than in Wales. In Scotland, targeted guerrilla campaigns, which do occur in Wales, are not seen. Key words: banal nationalism, sub-state nationalism, Scotland, Wales, regional competence, devolution

Lepič, Martin ; Tomeš, Jiří (advisor) ; Jelen, Libor (referee)
The subject of research of this presented diploma thesis is the evaluation of the factors that influence the genesis of nationalist aspirations and separatist tendencies on two scale levels: the level of Spanish Autonomous Communities, and between comarcas in the Basque Country and Catalonia. Emphasis is placed primarily on the differentiation between the influence of economic aspirations and ethno-national identity. On the theoretical level, the thesis discusses approaches to nationalism, its typology, resources and activation, as well as the development of social organization and the asymmetrical division of powers in Spain. For the purposes of analysis, two indicators of intensity of expressed nationalism are used - constitutional preference and voting behavior - and then each are tested in relation to socio-economic characteristics, ethno-cultural manifestations, or relevant demographic characteristics. The thesis also evaluates the system of set fiscal redistribution between regions and central government.

Results and conclusion The process of Caucasian ethno-political mobilization began in the 60's of 20th century (somewhere has been running since the begenning of the Russian colonization), however its acceleration came on in the second of 80's. Unintended consequent of the reforms became absolute soviet power decline leading to dismantling of Soviet union. The totalitarian system release and the political decentralization are appeared to be key catalysts of the ethnic clashes with roots liying in ethnic trauma of the last century. Ethno- mobilization arised then out of ethnic interactions given by historical reminiscence and asymetric status of particular groups within the federal system defined by the soviet authorities during 20's and 30's of the last century. In its implication, social, economical and cultural discrimination called "internal colonization" occured. On the contrary, the "ethnic competition" about economical and political resource control within given territory happend in cases of a titular group superior status or equal status of two titular groups. Separatism, iredentism or territorial autonomism were final goals of ethno-mobilization efforts in both theoretical...
