Travelling Painted Pebbles as a Form of Gift in Public Space
Procházková, Alžběta ; Janeček, Petr (advisor) ; Půtová, Barbora (referee)
The thesis focuses on the contemporary cultural practice of painting and picking up travelling painted pebbles in the Czech Republic. These pebbles are left in a public space by their creators as a gift to a stranger. The finder of such a pebble can share photo of fit on electronic social networks and then move it to another place. The aim of the thesis is to determine and interpret the meanings that these pebbles have for both their creators and finders. It does so by proposing a typology of pebbles according to their functions. The thesis further specifies the actors' motivations for creating painted stones as well as for searching them and picking them up. The research has confirmed that by performing the activities associated with this practice, actors exchange gifts, and these gifts can take several forms. Travelling painted pebbles also show signs of objects of serial collaboration of Lynne McNeill's theory.
The late socialist Czechoslovak ethnography and folklore studies and its influence on the Czech tradition of sociocultural anthropology after 1989
Balaš, Nikola ; Bittnerová, Dana (advisor) ; Janeček, Petr (referee) ; Woitsch, Jiří (referee)
This thesis is an attempt to provide an account of the late socialist discipline of Czechoslovak ethnography and folklore studies and provide a basis for understanding of ethnography's post socialist transformation into anthropology and ethnology. The main theoretical framework of the thesis is the critical sociology of science of Pierre Bourdieu. The thesis focuses especially on two ethnography institutions - the Department of Ethnography and Folklore Studies at Charles University in Prague and the Prague branch of the Institute for Ethnography and Folklore Studies of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in the late socialist period, which covers the 1970s and 1980s. Apart from providing some intellectual dimension of ethnography, the thesis aims to uncover other dimensions of ethnographers' practices such as research methods, language competences, writing habits, academic hierarchies or attitudes to mutual criticism. The thesis argues that whereas ethnography as a label disappeared in the 1990s, ethnographers' practices continued to shape the nascent Czech anthropology and ethnology. The thesis makes an intensive use of ethnographers' scholarly writings, interviews with former ethnographers and also uses some documentary evidence and secondary literature as its sources. Keywords: history of...
Informal transmission of vernacular "folk recipes" among Czech young adults
Nôšková, Dominika ; Janeček, Petr (advisor) ; Půtová, Barbora (referee)
The primary purpose of the bachelor's thesis was to map out the process of informal intergenerational transmission of "recipe knowledge", vernacular, often family recipes that have to do with proper digestion and prevention of indigestion in the environment of contemporary Czech youth at the age of young adulthood (i.e., 18-25 years). The work is defined by research questions, "From whom, when and where did this generation gain knowledge of recipes", "Does this generation actively pass on recipe knowledge?" "To whom, when and in what situations is this transfer made?" " The data documentation was primarily conducted on the basis of both informal and formalized interviews with the interviewees. Part of the work is a theoreticalhistorical part, seeking to define the concept of "recipe knowledge" in dialogue with ethnological and folklorist literature. Using internet analysis, semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire investigation, I have come to the conclusion that recipe knowledge or advice is still a topic of discussion. Young adults, from smaller towns and villages, who moved to Prague between the ages of 12-15, are particularly close to this. Referring to the interviews and results from the questionnaires, it is more women who provide, pass on and practice grandmotherly advice in everyday life....
Between waking and dreaming: Cultural transformations of a sleep paralysis
Jedinák, Boris ; Janeček, Petr (advisor) ; Jakoubek, Marek (referee)
On one side, the diploma thesis examines the phenomenon of sleep paralysis (hereinafter referred to as SP), its cultural conceptualizations in archaic folklore in the Czech lands and in contemporary (modern) folklore - mainly it is focused on individual and collective explanations of its meanings. The theoretical part briefly outlines the character of SP from the perspective of modern psychiatry and the archaic folkloric interpretations of this sleep disorder appearing in various non-European cultures. The theoretical part is mostly focused on the phenomenon of the moth, the phantom, which the author considers to be one of possible understandings of this sleep disorder in the legends and customs of archaic Czech folklore. The research part of the thesis is based on ethnographic fieldwork. The aim was to map out, on the basis of ethnographic interviews with people who have experienced SP, how SP can be interpreted individually today, how this individual interpretation overlaps with the folkloric manifestations of the sleep disorder described in the theoretical part, relevant to a given cultural setting, and how pre-existing cultural models appearing in contemporary popular culture and modern folklore shape the individual experience of SP and the personal interpretation of informants. In yet another...
