Investigating the Pronunciation of Loanwords

Our analysis of Czech loanword phonology under the project “Pronunciation of non-integrated lexical items” is based on a theoretical framework which includes eight adaptation principles (phonological approximation; spelling pronunciation; original pronunciation; analogy with the donor language; analogy with the recipient language; influence of a third language; influence of universals; unclearly motivated pronunciation). A large-scale empirical survey of pronunciation practice, which is a part of this project, offers a realistic view of loanword phonology in Czech, with respect to both its current state and its dynamics. The data obtained provide socially stratified insights into problems such as the variation of vowel length, that of consonant voicing, the pronunciation of proper names, and the influence of spelling. The database of recorded variants may serve as a resource for lexicographic work.

The print on textile

The thesis is focused on print on textile. Theoretical part of the thesis describes natural and synthetic textile fibres, construction of textile fabrics, their history and ways of use. Next part is devoted to the art of printing, specifically hand printing methods. There is one chapter describing how to use the hand print in teaching at elementary schools of art. This is followed by the practical part of thesis. The practical part describes different procedures of hand printing on the different textile fabrics. There are presented final scarves with own patterns. Results of this thesis are described in the last chapter.

Problematic or interesting pronunciation of foreign proper names (a Czech Radio employees' view)

This article presents preliminary results from field research conducted at Czech Radio. Researchers from the Czech Language Institute conducted a total of 15 approximately hour-long semi-structured interviews with Czech Radio employees. Topics of the interviews included (a) words which are problematic or otherwise interesting in terms of pronunciation, and (b) potential solutions to these pronunciation problems. The article presents an overview of nearly 80 foreign-language names which have various pronunciation variants, respondents’ attitudes toward them, and in some cases their declared process of finding the appropriate pronunciation. Attention is further devoted to the respondents’ awareness of the rules for the pronunciation of loanwords and foreign language personal names in Czech.

Dialect features in magazine interviews

The article analyzes elements of the Wallachian dialect which appeared in selected magazine article interview. The interview analyzed is essentially written in standard Czech, yet it is to varying degrees permeated by elements of the Wallachian dialect. The occurrence of various varieties is connected to the so-called diglossic situation in Czech. Dialect elements are generally represented in the interviews through the use of well-known lexical units (dědina) as well as lesser-known ones (uškřekaná) or morphological differences (potřebujú). Dialect elements can be used to contribute to the overall lively character of the interview and bring the reader closer to the interviewee.

Loanwords and Foreign Proper Names in Czech: a Phonologist’s View

The objective of the present paper is to analyze phonological aspects of orthographically non-adapted loanwords and foreign proper names on a non-normative basis. A system of eight adaptation principles is put forward (1. phonological approximation; 2. spelling pronunciation; 3. original pronunciation; 4. analogy with the donor language; 5. analogy with the recipient language; 6. the influence of a third language; 7. the influence of universals; 8. unclearly motivated pronunciation). This system is then applied to a sample of Anglicisms taken from a recently published dictionary. We show that the most important principles are phonological approximation and, to a lesser degree, spelling pronunciation. The “secondary” principles (4–8) affect only a small number of items. Differences between British and American pronunciation are unproblematic for the system.

Bílej kůň, žlutej drak and the discourse of authorship

This article is devoted to the analysis of media texts (a total of 15 texts published between September 1 and December 12, 2009) which reflect the Knižní klub [Book Club] publisher’s awarding of its annual literary prize to Lan Pham Thi, at the time alleged to be a young Vietnamese author, for the novel Bílej kůň, žlutej drak [White Horse, Yellow Dragon], as well as texts which concern the revealing of the book’s real author – Jan Cempírek. The aim of the analysis, which is based methodologically on the concept of dialogical networks, is to gain an answer to the following research questions: 1. How do the media characterize Lan Pham Thi? 2. How do the media characterize Jan Cempírek? 3. What is the role of Jan Cempírek in the formation of the dialogical network? The analysis reveals that the authors of the selected texts considered it necessary to categorize Lan Pham Thi according to her ethnicity, many of them doing so repeatedly over the course of a single text. Jan Cempírek, the actual author of the book, tended not to be categorized in an ethnic sense – rather, the authors of the texts orient toward his non-ethnic characteristics, above all the city of his origin. Jan Cempírek plays an essential role in the formation of the dialogical network under study. He is the author of the book, which is the first turn in this dialogue, he wrote the two key sentences Jsem Češka. Jsem Vietnamka. [I am Czech. I am Vietnamese], which were reproduced repeatedly in the texts, and he also closed the network by admitting to his true identity.

The effect of different management on plant diversity and biomass production of grass stands

The aim of this study is to assess the effect of different management practises on submontane meadow plant diversity, species richness and biomass production. The experiment was carried out in the submontane region Šumava (Kaplicko, Velký Chuchelec, Údolí Velenovského potoka). There were applied four types of management {--} continual grazing, mulching, fallow (Velký Chuchelec) and mowing (Údolí Velenovského potoka). Plant diverzity and hay production has been observing for three years. Obtained data were used for calculation Simpson and Hill index diverzity, value of fodder quality and nutritive and water regime (condition) of site. Values were used for statistical computing (ANOVA, Fischer LSD test). The plant species diverzity and biomass production are significantly affected by grassland management (treatment). Mulching and fallow lead to lower species richness and increases the coverage of grasses. Hay production is higher on mulching and fallow stands and on mowed stands than on continuously grazed stands. Mowing leads to higher species richness. Is necessary to conserve this status by mowing or the better way is to intesify contemporary management.

International Markets Entry Strategy

It describes strategic management process as well as individual forms of international martets entry. The second part analyzes ČEZ Group strategy. The individual chapters assess recent activities of the company in domestic and international markets. The third part is dedicated to the analysis of a concrete business case, i.e. Turkey.

Firemní kultura

Firemní kultura ovlivňuje celý chod společnosti. Patří mezi nejzákladnější měkké předpoklady prosperity. Může se stát velmi mocným nástrojem pracovní motivace. Existuje jasná souvislost mezi vyspělostí firmy a její kulturou. Cílem je zhodnotit firemní kulturu jednak po stránce teoretické a jednak po stránce praktické se zaměřením na Skupinu ČEZ, v neposlední řadě také diagnostikovat firemní kulturu v této společnosti. Bakalářská práce se skládá ze tří hlavních částí. První část práce je zaměřena na firemní kulturu obecně. Druhá část nabízí seznámení s kulturou Skupiny ČEZ. Třetí část je věnována diagnostice firemní kultury se zaměřením na zjištění stavu kultury ve Skupině ČEZ.
