The Contribution of Farmers' Market to Czech Farmers
Procházková, Alena ; Fendrychová, Lenka (advisor) ; Spilková, Jana (referee)
This paper is focused on the represented contributions of farmers' markets to farmers and rural areas. The goal of this research is to find out if farmers' markets can be a thriving strategy for Czech farmers and if they represent the same contributions as the western authors introduce. The theoretical portion of this paper provides a review of the new paradigm of rural development, alternative food networks, farmers' markets and specifies the conditions of Czech agriculture. The contributions based on the literature research were used as material for interviews with farmers from three selected farmers' markets in Prague. According to the results from the interviews, it seems that the farmers' markets are partly a thriving strategy for Czech farmers despite differing conditions in agriculture. The farmers' market can be, for small Czech farmers, a way to increase their profits as well as provide them with a larger portion of the sales price. By contrast, the potential to increase employment by generating new job opportunity was not proved to be true. Only a small part of farmers needed to employ another person. Farmers'markets. Function, attendance, relations
Jarolímková, Kamila ; Bičík, Ivan (advisor) ; Fendrychová, Lenka (referee)
The bachelor's thesis deals with a topic of farmers' markets, their function, attendance and relations. The goal of my thesis was classification of trends of the farmers' markets to broader socioeconomic context and analyze customers at farmers' markets by questionnaire research. The theoretical part describes functioning and attendance of farmers' markets in the USA, Great Britain, France, Germany and in the Czech Republic. There are discussed related trends like "boxing" and farmer's shops as well. There is included general chapter about consumption with evaluation of problem of the excessive consumption, consumer lifestyle, globalization and (un)sustainable development. It is apparent from the results of questionnaire research, that customers of the farmers' markets are not only wealthy people, it was one of the main hypothesis. It was verified by the questionnaire research, that most of people do not think, that the farmers' markets are only trendy. It is described in literature and it was proven by research that people shop there because of quality and freshness of food and because of support of local producers. Keywords: farmers' markets, consumption, "boxing", customers of farmers' markets
"The other" geography of alternative food networks: farmers' markets as a travelling concept
Fendrychová, Lenka ; Chromý, Pavel (advisor) ; Kostelecký, Tomáš (referee) ; Pauknerová, Karolína (referee)
Boom of the farmers' markets in 2010 represented a brand new phenomenon in the so far rather calm development of the Czech alternative food networks (AFNs). Unprecedented was the extent of political support at the local and state level as well as the interest of media and consumers. My PhD project originates in the desire to understand this phenomenon. I realized qualitative research of practice and discourse of the farmers' markets in the territory of Prague metropolitan area (PMA) during the years 2011 and 2012. The main research methods included interviews with organizers, observation at the markets, and the content analysis of the mass media. In the course of the research it became obvious that the current academic discourse, rooted primarily in the Anglo-American context, cannot be applied to the Czech reality. Also, the specific features of the farmers' markets in the PMA could only partially be explained by the differences between the Czech post-socialist context and "the West". An interpretation of the boom of farmers' markets in the PMA, consistent with the results of my research, was only enabled by an innovative approach which combines the concept of the travelling theory, postcolonial sensitivity to the mutual relations between source and target contexts, and the findings of the studies...

Societal Driving Forces of LUCC in the Boží Dar Model Area, Krušné hory Mts., in 1842-2009
Kašková, Magdalena ; Fendrychová, Lenka (referee) ; Jeleček, Leoš (advisor)
The thesis deals with land use development in the model area Boží Dar, situated near the Czech-German border in the Krušné hory mountains, from 1845 to 2009. Based on an analysis of data taken from the LUCC Czechia Database, changes in land use patterns are explained and the primary driving forces, particularly societal forces, behind these changes are explored. This was made possible by analysing the historic-geographical development of the territory in question, focusing in particular on the last twenty years. Tendencies in land use development were similar to general trends for Czechia; however, they were more significant in the studied area. Major changes took place between 1949 and 1990. Besides the exodus of the Czech Germans after WW II, the primary factor of land use change was isolation, caused by the establishment of a border zone. Changes of similar importance, recorded in the 2000 - 2009 period, were caused by unique economic developments in Boží Dar. These are based on support for sustainable tourism, effectively drawing on financial resources from the EU and the active participation of local government administration. The most significant change was a decrease in permanent grasslands. At present, their overall area is increasing again, due to the renewed use of waterlogged land for...
