Classroom Instructions in Teaching English

The diploma thesis Classroom Instructions in Teaching English aims at presenting basic principles of giving instructions during English lessons and their practical use. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The latter is further separated into a list of textbook instructions and a list of instructions used in classes. The theoretical part describes an important relation of instructions and the classroom situation as well as the dependence on the immediate response from the students. The ensuing part deals with applying the theoretical principles in practice. The author gathered instructions used in the third edition of New Headway series textbooks and instructions used by teachers in English lessons at various types of schools (the age of the observed students ranged from 7 to 18 years old) not only to illustrate usage of the theoretical principles in practice but also to show the differences between textbook and classroom instructions and to present a sample of instructions that are used at several schools in the Czech Republic. Teaching Cultural Studies of English-speaking Countries at Grammar Schools in the Czech Republic in 21st century

This diploma thesis focuses on cultural studies as subject matter. Their roles are examined in teaching methods, in approaches to teaching by experts and in FEP SGE. It was found out from a questionnaire survey aimed at English teachers how and to what extent cultural studies are taught in English lessons at grammar schools. A content analysis of the three most used English student's books showed that cultural studies are included in them and they correspond to the requirements of FEP SGE; however, they do not include all of the topics and even some English-speaking countries rarely appear in them as well. The last part presents a lesson plan of cultural studies aimed at grammar schools. The country that was chosen for the lesson plan was Australia as it almost did not appear in the student's books. Teaching English Effectively with an Interactive Whiteboard

The diploma thesis Teaching English Effectively with an Interactive Whiteboard deals with the phenomenon of interactive whiteboards; their characteristics, installation in schools, possible ways of use and contributions to English lessons. The main aims are to examine the tool from various perspectives, to research the situation of IWBs in the Czech Republic and to provide technical as well as methodological support for teachers of English as a foreign language. The theoretical part summarises facts about interactive whiteboards on the basis of worldwide research and publications, whereas the main body is more teacher-oriented and focuses on the practical aspects of using IWBs at schools. Therefore, it includes a survey, guidelines with many ideas, sample activities created in the software ActiveInspire and accompanied by a detailed commentary, and finally, training for teachers which was organised in Prague. Mind Maps in English LanguageTeaching

The thesis discusses using mind maps in English language teaching. It explains what mind maps are and how to use them effectively. This thesis includes a theoretical as well as a practical part. The theoretical part offers two points of view of the problem - psychological and pedagogical. The psychological part deals with theoretical knowledge of memory and learning. In the pedagogical part, firstly learning styles in connection with mind maps are discussed; secondly some demonstrations of using mind maps in various English textbooks are presented. The practical part focuses mainly on new ideas. First chapter of the practical part shows various classroom or individual mind map activities that concentrate on different language skills. The second chapter is the most important section of the whole thesis as it introduces a new method for learning vocabulary via mind maps. Observations of four students using the method and reflections on it are offered in the following chapters. Finally, the results and conclusions of the observations as well as the advantages and disadvantages of mind maps in general are presented.
Motivation of Students Attending Lower and Upper Secondary Schools for Studying Foreign Languages

The Diploma Thesis deals with motivation. In the theoretical part of the Diploma Thesis the issue of motivation is first explained in general and then the issue of school motivation is discussed. The practical part presents the result of the research which was conducted at two lower secondary and two upper secondary schools. The research focuses mainly on comparison of motivation of the students of the schools for studying foreign language.
Text-based Computer mediated communication: forms, characteristics & influence on peripheral English vocabulary

This B.A. Thesis introduces main forms of text-based Computer mediated communication in order to demonstrate that they differ in the level to which they motivate user's employment of new English peripheral vocabulary. General characteristics of the forms as well as results of their influence on English peripheral lexicon are discussed to provide better understanding of the issue. The work also addresses potential threats of utilization of computer mediated communication to the English language. The final conclusion is that there certainly are differences between forms of computer mediated communication in terms of employment of new specific lexicon and also that this new vocabulary does not represent a significant threat to the English language.
Motivation of Adults in ELT

Tato práce se zabývá neformální výukou anglického jazyka dospělých. Pojednává o motivačních prvcích v jazykovém vzdělávání a jak je na motivační strukturu ve výuce anglického jazyka nahlíženo učiteli a jejich studenty. Cílem práce bylo prozkoumat motivační citlivost učitelů v tzv. one-to-one jazykových firemních kurzech a jaké motivační strategie v těchto kurzech učitelé využívají. Teoretická část této práce se zabývá pozadím tématiky vzdělávání dospělých a praktická čast práce se skládá ze dvou částí - dotazníkového šetření a pozorování výuky.
Use of "Friends" series in teaching English on B2 level

This thesis deals with the possibilities of using television series `Friends' in teaching English on B2 level to further linguistic and communicative competences of the students. The purpose of this thesis was to find out, whether a systematic use of the series, as a motivation to the students, for sparking a discussion or conversation among them or as means of immersion in the language and acquisition of the language, would be possible in a high school English teaching environment for a prolonged period of time. The thesis also debates the advantages and disadvantages of using series, compared to the advantages and disadvantages of using different multimedia. The thesis contains a list of activities that have been used during the testing of the series and several ideas on their modification.
Using Music as a Stimulus for Communication in EFL Classes

The thesis focuses on specific qualities of songs that can represent an effective stimulus for communication among students and that can contribute to the development of students' speaking skills. The theoretical part of the paper introduces general advantages of songs in foreign language classes. The main aspects of different learning styles, communicative activities, as well as important rules that should be followed when song-based communicative activities are to be used during English language lessons are outlined in the chapter dealing with the dialog between theory and practice. The action research project of the paper includes the questionnaire and six detailed activity plans that demonstrate a variety of approaches to the use of songs. The lessons are described, analysed and reflected upon so that their effectiveness could be evaluated. The final evaluation of the action research project presents conclusions that support the validity of the thesis and suggests the conditions for further using song-based communicative activities in English classes. Common mistakes Czech students make in English and their Remedial Treatment

Common mistakes Czech students make in English represent the main topic of the presented master thesis. The theoretical part mainly deals with the presentation of various TEFL (Teaching English as Foreign Language) methods. Moreover, they are discussed from several perspectives, including techniques, strategies and principles while using the particular method, the role of the teacher, his or her relationship with students, and especially the response to errors within each of the methods. The purpose of presenting TEFL methods is to show also the connection between mistakes and methods themselves. Concerning the area of mistakes and their corrections, we focus on the classification of mistakes and their division. The practical part is based on various illustrations of mistakes from students' writing assignments. These mistakes are divided into four major classes, including grammar, spelling, wrong word and word order. The thesis also deals with the remedial treatment which may hopefully reduce the number of possible mistakes. The aim of the thesis is to compare the level of students' English language knowledge at the Secondary School of Tourism in Prague where the author works as an English teacher.
