Technical Translation and Organized Translating Activities in the Second Half of the 20th Century

This thesis discusses the topic of the organized translation activities in the second half of the 20th century. It focuses especially on translators of technical texts. The purpose of the thesis is to provide the basic overview of organizations and institutions which operated in Czechoslovakia, and to which the translation activities were concentrated. There is no similar systematic overview in the home professional literature yet. The research method of the oral history was realized via interviews with witnesses. Case studies, dealing in detail with one or another of the examined organizations or institutions, like International Federation of Translators, Translation Department of the Czechoslovakian Writer's Union, translation department in Škoda Auto a.s., International Organisation of Journalists, Prague City Tourism and World Federation of Trade Unions, resulted from the interviews. The information from the interviews was compared and general conclusions about the translating work in the second half of the 20th century were stated. Some Notes on Breaking German Word-Formation Rules in the Language of Advertising

In this thesis has been considered that the language of advertising should be viewed as an autonomous functional style due to its unique formulations. Existing literature which is concerned with the language of German advertising or advertising in general provides to this subject ambiguous information. My goal was to compare interpretations of different authors and on the strength of my own collection of examples to assess if the language of advertising is an autonomous functional style. This work focuses on breaking German word-formation rules especially on elements of spoken language, occasionalismus and comparison of adjectives. It was considered the function of the language of advertising as well which hangs nearly together with the choice of expressions. The function turned out to be the decisive argument by setting of the functional style.
