Lexical idioms in English

According to the standard definition phraseology deals with multi-word lexical units, i.e. word combinations. Voices claiming that even complex words composed of two or more meaningful units may qualify for the status of (lexical) phrasemes/idioms, especially when their meaning is non- compositional, are still very isolated, in spite of the fact that linguistic literature is teeming with references to idiomatic compounds and derivatives (Chap. 3). In fact, the only systematic treatment of lexical idioms seems to be that offered by Čermák (2007), who focuses primarily on lexical idioms in Czech. The aim of the thesis is therefore to explore the situation in English and attempt to develop a useful definition of, and especially criteria for, distinguishing lexical idioms from other complex lexemes and provide an outline of the main types of lexical idioms obtaining in English. After an introduction (Chap. 1) and the presentation of state-of-the-art approaches to phraseology and the relevant information about phraseological units and their features (Chap. 2), the thesis reviews Čermák's theory of lexical idioms which inspired their quantitative study in Czech (Chap. 4). Lexical Expressions of Timbre of Musical Sounds in Czech

This bachelor thesis addresses the general nature of lexical expressions used to describe timbre of musical sounds in Czech language. This part of vocabulary has not been linguistically described in Czech language yet, the main goal of the thesis therefore is to find out what kind of expressions are used to describe timbre in Czech language, how expansive this area of vocabulary approximately is, with what frequency do these expressions occur in language and whether they are used in a systematic way. The thesis also focuses on a semantic nature of these expressions. Since many of them are in fact metaphorical, the thesis aims to find the source domains from which the expressions describing timbre are taken. Data for the research has been collected by filling an on-line form. In ideal case, this thesis should describe the general nature of this part of vocabulary and offer some possibilities for further research. Keywords: timbre, music, frequency, conceptual metaphor

Sense Inheritance in the Derivation by Suffixes from Polysemous Words

The present thesis deals with, and elaborates on, the concept of sense inheritance (particularly with respect to suffixation in Czech). Drawing on more general remarks on lexical meaning, polysemy, and the semantic relatedness of a derived word and its base, the theoretical part of the thesis delineates the notion of sense inheritance, originating within the framework of construction grammar. It is shown that the idea of sense inheritance has at least implicitly been present in Czech lexicology (cf. the derivational criterion for identifying senses of polysemous words) and lexicography. It is argued that the traditional Czech theory of word formation relies on the assumption of the semantic transparency or even compositionality of motivated words, which can hardly be squared with empirical evidence concerning sense inheritance, nevertheless. In the empirical part of the thesis semantic relations are analyzed that hold between derivatives within 43 word families of polysemous bases (denoting body parts), and subsequently the sense-inheritance properties of the 80 most frequent (hence established and lexicalized) derivatives with the agentive suffix -tel and polysemous base verbs are contrasted with those found in 100 hapax legomena derived from polysemous bases with the same affix. Language cliché in contemporary TV news

This diploma thesis focuses on language cliché in contemporary TV news. The aim of the theoretical part is to define the term cliché, specify its key features and describe language of the TV news. The analytical part focuses on finding and describing language clichés in the analysed material, which consists of TV news texts from three different Czech TV stations. The analysed material is restricted on preselected period of time. The chosen material is acquired from Newton Media archive, and the descriptions of particular clichés are accompanied by frequency and collocation data from language corpus SYN2015. The core of this diploma thesis is systematic definition of the term cliché and the linguistic analysis of particular clichés that can be found in contemporary TV news.

Dynamics of Language Expression in Contemporary Mass Media

The main objective of this thesis called "Language Innovations in Mass Media" is to identify and compare language innovations in articles produced by major printed mass medium with language innovations in news programme broadcasted by public TV channel. Thesis aims to describe actual trends of language innovations, specifically lexical and word-building process. Overall, author analysed language of 17,723 reports and 1,174 articles from TV programme Události (produced by Česká televize and broadcasted daily at 7pm) and front pages of daily newspaper (MF DNES) from one-year period. Author detects similar patterns in terms of language innovations in both sources, however, the realization of the innovations is different.

Figurative Names in Contemporary Czech Christian Literature for Children

This bachelor's dissertation analyzes the lexical content of contemporary Christian literary works for children. It looks at a corpus of prose story books (original stories, rather than re-told Bible stories), intended for children aged 6-12 that were published between 1990 and 2017. It focuses on figurative names (metaphors and symbols), which are used to help children understand basic Christian truths and terminology (heaven/paradise and eternal life, hell, satan, the Bible) and the persons of the Holy Trinity. It also examines the most frequently used metaphors (contrasting terms such as light and darkness, cleanliness and dirt, wide and narrow pathways) and the symbolism of colour. The metaphors are assessed from the perspective of their origin (in particular to what extent they are rooted in the Bible) and on the basis of their cognitive function, judged from their use within the book's content. The work maps the market for this type of literature and provides an annotated list of existing titles. Medical Doctors' Language Humour

The diploma thesis focuses on the language humour in medical practice. In its first part, a general characterization of humour and comicality is analysed, based mainly on models by Henri Bergson, Bohuslav Brouk and Ladislav Dvorský. The work then focuses on the medical humour, particularly on humorous stories and jokes with medical setting. A basic typology of medical humour was created based on selected examples by comparing similar signs and elements occurring in the analysed material. The main established typological categories were: homonymy and polysemy, metaphor, metonymy, puns or slang. The diploma thesis also contains a short survey, summarizing the experience of doctors with medical humour directly in medical practice.

The development of Andrej Babiš's Czech from a second-language acquisition viewpoint

This thesis deals with the develompent of Andrej Babiš's Czech. Babiš is a Slovak politician and businessman, who lives in the Czech Republic and whose speeches and media appearances have been part of Czech public discourse for the past few years. The aim of this thesis is to describe how Babiš's language changes over time and how Slovak interference influences it. Hypotheses focus on the number of errors in Babiš's speech, the specific types of errors he makes and the interlingual / intralingual error ratio. The theoretical part of the thesis introduces basic second-language acquisition terminology, which is later used in the practical part. The practical part consists mainly of an error analysis of recordings of interviews with Babiš. Lexical, syntactic, morphological, phonetic, phonological and other differences between Czech and Slovak, which are the source of negative language transfer in Babiš's Czech, are also described. The conclusion shows how parameters of the politician's speech changed over six years and offers an explanation of the change.

Czech schools without borders. Multiple case study

Multiple case study Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to describe the development undertaken by the Czech Schools without Borders since their establishment and to illustrate how they currently operate, what is the outcome of their function especially on the field of Czech language education, and how their executives, pupils and their parents evaluate this functioning and its outcomes. The thesis is structured as a multiple case study focused on two such schools with a longer tradition - the Czech School without Borders in Brussels and the Czech School without Borders in Geneva. Its methodology will be based on ethnographic procedures of data collection and handling. It will focus on analyzing the development of the mentioned Czech Schools without Borders (mainly on the basis of official written documents), on the current operation of these schools (on the basis of an analysis of administrative documents, especially curriculums and learning materials) and its outcomes and on the reflection of the function of Czech Schools without Borders by their executives (school principals, through analysis of semi-structured interviews), current pupils and their parents (through a questionnaire survey).

The placement of the Common Czech in the teaching of Czech as a foreign language

The aim of this thesis is to find out, and then to analyze, whether adult students of Czech as a foreign language can recognize the differences between Literary and Common Czech language, whether they define where they meet them and whether they are able to use the proper words of Literary and Common form of the Czech language appropriately in selected communication situations. Equally important is the discovery of their personal preferences in teaching whether the Common Czech is intended to be taught in an institutionalized environment or not. The questionnaire survey itself is preceded by a theoretical starting point, in which we deal with the definition of Common and Literary Czech language and the characteristics of their most frequent differences. A partial part of the work is also a brief analysis of the selected teaching material, taking into account the way of presentation of Common Czech language.Based on the results of the questionnaire survey, we will present a linguistic recommendation at the end of the work.
