Meislová, Kristýna ; Blažek, Jiří (advisor) ; Skokan, Karel (referee)
The study deals with application of related variety concept and other evolutionary economic geography approaches in the economic landscape of postsocialist states of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The goal was to define different types of variety and explore the relationship between these varieties and economic development in CEE countries between 1993 and 2009. The analysis is based on the theoretical and analytical framework presented in studies realized in the most developed countries of Western Europe. The important finding is that this kind of research allow to conclude that different types of variety influence the economic development, but some of the results are different from those in prior studies. The porfolio effect of unrelated variety was not confirmed. However, the results show strong evidence that related variety stimulates employment growth and usually contributes to GDP growth of CEE countries. The results also indicate, that high variety of related sectors could be crucial for future development of new industries (especially in Central Europe). Keywords: evolutionary economic geography, related and unrelated variety, economic development, Central and Eastern Europe

Labajová, Zuzana ; Blažek, Jiří (advisor) ; Rumpel, Petr (referee)
The thesis submitted deals with the matters of perception and spatial preferences of inhabitants. The main target is to explore the attractiveness of Bohemian regional towns by university students from the four Moravian regional towns - Brno, Ostrava, Olomouc, Zlín. Through ascertaining what the Moravian students' perception of regional towns is, it will be possible to confirm or disprove the identified polarity Bohemia versus Moravia in the antecedent work of M. Wernerová, to which this more thorough, detailed and revised study represents - in a certain regard - a follow-up. The research is based on an extensive questionnaire survey that was conducted during April and May 2009 in the four Moravian regional towns. Three essential spheres are researched - occupational, residential and recreational preferences. The results of the questionnaire survey were then compared with a quantitative evaluation by the means of socio-economic indicators. The last chapter of the study is concerned with a confrontation of the results with those of M. Wernerová's work. It has been proved that the Moravian students' perception of the regional towns attractiveness is not in a great deal influenced by subjective indicators (such as the image of the town, knowledge and proximity of the locality), and thus the preferential...

Health and reducing disparities in health between and within countries are among the principal global sustainable development objectives for the period 2016-2030. The incidence of Occupational Diseases (OD) is characterized by very distinct differentiation, both regional and sectoral, and has considerable dynamics in time and place. Given that Czechia is at the top among all EU member states in terms of employment in the automotive industry and production of new vehicles, new research on OD in the automotive industry acquires importance. The Ph.D. Thesis is conceived as an ecological correlation study focusing on the study of the determinants of OD in automotive industry. Its own core work is to analyze 32,646 cases of OD (in the past 20 years) and a set of data from a survey of 247 companies of the automotive industry (employing nearly 110,000 employees, i.e. 78 % of the economically active population working in this sector). In the present work are used available data from routine statistics, data from registers and basic sanitation data from a questionnaire survey. The study innovatively links research of Global production networks and medical-geographical approach. At the end of the Ph.D. Thesis, specific outcomes for praxis and discusses possible topics for further research in this area are...

Analysis of financial centres' position changes in the hierarchy of the European financial centres between 2005-2012
Hejnová, Tereza ; Blažek, Jiří (advisor) ; Rada, Hynek (referee)
This master thesis investigates recent dynamics of the European financial centres' hierarchy. In particular, the changes in this hierarchy during the financial crisis have been scrutinized. The first, the second and the third-tier European financial centres have been identified on the basis of total assets of banks localised in a given financial centre. The major impact of the global financial crisis has been a further accumulation within the banking sector (measured in terms of total assets), as the two biggest European financial centres increased their position significantly during the financial crisis. The analysis of pre-tax profits indicator showed that the second-tier financial centres have been hit hardest during the crisis. The results of analysis of evolution of employment in the financial sector provided the evidence that the change in the levels of employment follows the changes in banks' profits with a certain delay. However, despite the severity of the 2007-2010 financial crisis the changes of employment were relatively modest compared to changes in banks' profits. Our analyses also showed that there is no statistically significant relationship between the change of the banks' profits and the change of GDP of a region, in which the respective financial centre is localised. Following...

Boháč, Ondřej ; Blažek, Jiří (advisor) ; Květoň, Viktor (referee)
This paper evaluates the benefits of investments in cycling infrastructure for regional development. The case study deals with socio-economic impacts of cycling transport infrastructure built for the Orlicko-Třebovsko region. The main thesis does not assume profitability of such investments in socio-economic realm of the region. Overall societal benefit has been assessed through the cost-benefit analysis. Individual elements of the analysis are focused on short-term, long-term, direct and indirect effects for the development of the region. The benefits are to be found in connection with implementation, management and operation of the project as well as transport sector, services sector and recreation. Specific positive effects take mainly the form of business sales, employment and savings for the population. The analysis has taken note of certain positive effect that is nevertheless economically inadequate to the amount of initial investment. Therefore in this case cycling transport infrastructure proved to be ineffective tool of regional development.

Kotinská, Radka ; Blažek, Jiří (advisor) ; Kokeš, Michal (referee)
3. Abstract The Czech Republic became a member of the European Union in 2004. As a member state none of whose NUTS II regions (except Prague) reaches the level of 75 % of the European annual per capita Gross Domestic Product, it has the opportunity to receive support from Structural Funds under the terms of Objective 1, whereby the largest volume of finance is being provided. The Joint Regional Development Programme is one of the programmes set up during the first programming period (2004 - 2006) in the Czech Republic. The programme differs from others in its field of activity because it combines infrastructure, human resources, information technology, tourism and small and middle enterprises, whereas each of the rest of the programmes specializes in just one sector. The total funds withdrawn from the European Regional Development Fund and European Social Fund amount to €60,2 million. The main purpose of this study is to explore the level of cohesion between the programme results and the needs and problems of the less developed NUTS III regions in the Czech Republic (Olomoucký, Moravskoslezský, Ústecký and Karlovarský). The second part of the analysis concentrates on the results of the programme at the state level. The aim is to determine how succesful the programme was and whether there are sectors of the...
