Random triangles
Matula, Dominik ; Anděl, Jiří (advisor) ; Dvořák, Jiří (referee)
The author summarizes some previous results concerning random triangles. He describes the Gaussian triangle and random triangles whose vertices lie in a unit n-dimensional ball, in a rectangle or in a general bounded convex set. In the second part, the author deals with an inscribed triangle in a triangle - let ABC be an equilateral triangle and let M, N, O be three points, each laying on one side of the ABC. We call MNO inscribed triangle (in an equi- laterral triangle). The median triangle is a special case of that triangle. Author starts with the median triangle and one by one replaces it's vertices by random points with uniform distribution on the corresponding sides. He proves that propability of such inscribed triangle to be an obtuse triangle increases with number of randomly chosen points while the expected area reminds constant. The whole thesis is concluded with a simulation study. 1
Non-regional govermental policies as a key mechanism of regional development: The case of regional dimension of sectoral and horizontal policies in the Czech Republic
Macešková, Marie ; Blažek, Jiří (advisor) ; Anděl, Jiří (referee) ; Ochrana, František (referee)
Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Science Department of Social Geography and Regional Development Marie Macešková NON-REGIONAL GOVERNMENTAL POLICIES AS A KEY MECHANISM OF REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT: THE CASE OF REGIONAL DIMENSION OF SECTORAL AND HORIZONTAL POLICIES IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC Synopsis of PhD Thesis Prague, 2009 Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Jiří Blažek Marie Macešková Synopsis of PhD Thesis 2 Marie Macešková Synopsis of PhD Thesis 3 1. INTRODUCTION Fiscal policy seems to be only a purely economic issue. However, social geographers have caught this topic in order to depict implications for regional development. As Martin and Minns (1995) pointed out, without the understanding of regional patterns of (not only) public financial flows, our knowledge of mechanisms and factors of regional development is severely limited. As regards the social geographical research of public finance, the attention has traditionally been paid to the issues of regional policy financial flows and their regional impact in connection to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of regional policy (e.g., Armstrong, Taylor 1985; Martin 1998, 1999; Cappelen et al 2003; Bradley 2006; Gripaios et al 2008; Crescenzi 2009). However, this sort of policy represents only a relatively small proportion of the entire governmental policy of...
Environmental migration in the Ústí region: perception of the environment and potential migration
Cejpek, Jan ; Čermák, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Anděl, Jiří (referee)
The diploma thesis analyses environmental migration, that is, the human migration as a result of environmental change. The aim of the thesis is to assess and explain this trend in the Ústí region in Czechia, a region with an extensive experience of environmentally induced migration due to the deteriorating conditions of the local environment. Special attention was paid to potential migration and the perception of the environment by young people aged 15-29 years. A questionnaire survey was used as the main research method, covering questions about the environment and migration (including the perception of the environment, migration motivation or the character and preference of potential migration). The results suggest, for example, that young people living in an area with deteriorated environment perceive it in a relatively positive way. Most importantly, environmental conditions are not the primary factor leading to the decision to migrate, but a secondary one. Economic factors are becoming more significant when choosing the ideal place to live, rather than non-economic factors. Key words: development displacees - environment - environmental migration - environmental perception - environmentally motivated migrants - migration motivation - potential migration - residential preferences - the Ústí region
Reterritorialization of the Western Ukraine Borderlands. The Case Study of Lviv Oblast.
Seidlová, Alexandra ; Jelen, Libor (advisor) ; Anděl, Jiří (referee)
The Diploma is focused on the EU's external borders impact on the border area of Lviv. Both local and regional level of social and economic development of the border area and its relations with Poland and EU are examined in the context of political development from the beginning of independent Ukraine until presents. Mixed-Methods approach has been applied as it allows case studies to be set in a wider context. Structural and regional disparities of the development are observed by methods of quantitative analysis and Descriptive Statistics. Qualitative Research is applied to analyse a cognitive role of the border. From the political point of view, the development of Eastern European border area is controlled by European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) and related EU regional political initiative. In the Western Ukrainian regions these are mainly represented by micro-projects focused on local problems and their solutions and intensification of the local cross-border cooperation development. Statistical analysis states that remarkable economic development has not reached the required level yet. However, the increasing social and infrastructural potential ushers in its rise in the future. Key words: Ukraine, border area of Lviv, border impact, cross-border cooperation, European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP)
Water resources of Kyrgyzstan as a geopolitical tool
Dresler, Jan ; Jelen, Libor (advisor) ; Anděl, Jiří (referee)
The thesis deals with the importance of water resources and their influence on political development with the example of Kyrgyzstan. The main objective was to find out the role of water resources in domestic politics, how water influences the relationship between Kyrgyzstan and its neighbors, and whether water resources are of interest to the world's superpowers. Geopolitical analysis was carried out on three levels. At national level, water scarcity, uneven distribution and obsolete water systems are a cause of civil discontent. Corruption in the state sphere negates the possibility of modernization of existing water facilities. Water management is dependent on non-governmental associations and foreign financial assistance. At regional level, there is constant tension between Kyrgyzstan, where all the important rivers of the region rise, and the states lying downstream of these rivers. The cause of this tension is different demands of individual states on water use. International treaties address the situation, but are mostly non-functional in the long term. At the supra-regional level, the interests of especially Russia and China collide. Both superpowers seek to prevent US influence in the region. At the same time, they gain a dominant position in Kyrgyzstan in the economic and security spheres....
