Characteristics of metakaoline modified mortars applied on historic objects
Slížková, Zuzana
Samples of two lime-metakaoline plasters applied on historical walls in the Czech Republic a few years ago were investigated and analysed using optical and SE microscopy, EDS, XRD, and mercury porosimetry. Mechanical and other physical characteristics of small samples were also determined. Results and recommendation are presented in the paper.
Analysis of art objects by mass spectrometry
Kučková, Štěpánka ; Hynek, R. ; Kodíček, M.
This paper reviews the latest progress in the identification of the proteinaceous materials and organic dyes presented in art and in historical building materials using mass spectrometry as a dominant method.
Characterisation of historic mortars. Determination of characteristic properties with respect to repair
Válek, Jan ; Slížková, Zuzana ; Zeman, Antonín ; Frolík, J. ; Bruthans, J. ; Chotěbor, P. ; Měchura, P.
Paper presents approach to characterisation of historic mortars, which is a part of a project that aims at a development of an advanced parametrical data base of properties of historic mortars and renders. The project develops its own method of sampling and selects the information to be collected.
Historic materials – challenges and inspirations
Drdácký, Miloš ; Slížková, Zuzana
The paper presents selected examples of historic building materials analyses and at the same time the utilisation of results for the innovation in the field of material engineering. Particularly there are presented analyses of traces of historic surface paints on timber, investigations of historic lime mortars modified with burned clay and a study of present-day lime mortar with addition of metakaolin designed as repair mortar for renovation and replacement the historic mortar.
Analysis of mortar and stone samples extracted from the Charles Bridge in Prague
Drdácký, Miloš ; Slížková, Zuzana
The report summarizes detailed results of physical and chemical analyses of samples of medieval mortars and stones – sandstones and argillite – extracted form historical masonry of the Charles Bridge in Prague.
Design of a new mortar based on lime modified with pozzolanic materials for the repair of an historical exterior plaster floor at Karlštejn castle
Slížková, Zuzana ; Drdácký, Miloš
The result of the report is an assessment of key characteristics (mechanical properties, absorbtion, porosity, resistance to frost) of samples taken from a mortar applied on exterior plaster floor at Karlštejn Castle as a trial test performed in 2006. The results of performed tests and a recommendation for a next conservation strategy is presented.
Comments on practical application of metakaoline
Slížková, Zuzana ; Bárta, J. ; Matal, L.
The paper presents results of a development of a premixed lime binder modified with metakaoline. The example of practical application of lime putty in mixture with metakaoline for historical render restoration is presented.
Tests for desing of mortars and renders compatible with existing historic material
Válek, Jan ; Slížková, Zuzana
Design of masonry mortars and renders for repair of historic structures includes tests and testing procedures which serve for evaluation of compatibility between existing material and repair mixtures. Paper describes current possibilities of tests and analysis of historic and new mortars. The authors stem from published definitions of compatibility and emphasize a necessity to take into account also more detailed technical specifications, e.g. position of evaluated material in structure, type of structure, material exposure conditions, degree of deterioration of material and its ability to serve its original function.
Mechanical and physical tests on lime mortars with metakaolin and their suitability for repair of protected historic monuments
Válek, Jan ; Slížková, Zuzana ; Zeman, Antonín
Mechanical and physical tests on lime mortars with addition of metakaolin from new sources in the Czech Republic were carried out in the laboratories of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics AV CR during 2004 to 2006. The tests results were used for design of optimised calcining temperature of kaolin, proportion of gauging between lime and metakaolin, and evaluation of influence of addition of Portland cement. Discussion of the results includes suitability of metakaolin gauged lime mortars for repair of historic monuments.
Design of repair exterior plaster floor of a medieval rampart at Karlštejn Castle based on modified lime mixtures
Slížková, Zuzana ; Drdácký, Miloš
The article describes a case study aimed at analysis of an ancient exterior plaster floor at Karlštejn Castle and the development of a repair mortar of similar characteristics
