Film adaptations of Émile Zola's Nana

In this thesis, four movie adaptations of naturalistic novel Nana by Emile Zola will be analysed. It will describe differences caused by the time in which the adaptations were filmed covering the period from the third decade of the twentieth century, when the most famous adaptation of Nana by Jean Renoir was created, till its modern form from the year 2001. The thesis will be mainly interested in the loyalty of each adaptation to the book. It will describe dominant features of the novel and assess how the directors succeeded in the preservation and depiction of the typical Zola's style together with the atmosphere and overall impression of each film. Throughout the work, I will try to answer a question whether the directors put emphasis on the same storylines as Zola did in the original novel and what is the cause of their modifications. Identity and variations in the novel Lignes de faille by Nancy Huston

The present study compares identity formation of the narrators in the novel Lignes de faille, who are six years old children of four consecutive generations. The aim of the thesis is to link and analyze two basic elements of Huston's creation, namely identity and variations. The first part of the study deals with the definition of identity and then describes the stages of identity formation according to the psychosocial concept of Erik H. Erikson. Afterwards, the thesis outlines family environment factors such as family composition, parenting style or religious denomination that contribute to the formation of identity. The second part of the comparative study focuses on the similarities and differences between the four children stories of which the novel is composed. The analysis deals with variations related to body perception, religious beliefs and family models. The thesis provides a point of view of the identity formation of the children and at the same time shows how the reactions to the factors that affect this formation resemble or differ across the four stories.
Linguistic and didactic interpretation of translation

This thesis is focused on the linguistic and didactic interpretation of translation. Its objective is to introduce the reader to the issues of language-focused findings, which are reflected in translators' work and besides, to describe the situation of didactic contribution of translation in second language teaching. The work is divided ino two main parts. In the first one, there is translators' work and his competences being presented on the ground of chosen linguistic theories. These are further extended by a practical part of description and analysis of translation methods. The whole thesis is being closed by the second part which mediates the didactic point of view of the given issue. The basic overview facts of actual situation of the use of translation in modern language classes are summarized in here.
Horizon of expectations of Czech and French speaking readers of children's literature

The aim of the thesis is to find out if and how the expectations of the readers change with their literary context and to discover the extent to which the contemporary writers Petr Nikl and Philippe Lechermeier come to meet their audiences. To answer this question various methodological procedures are employed: observation and then comparison of Czech and French literary context to form the hypotheses. The hypotheses are verified by the case study based on the analyses of two books (Záhádky by Petr Nikl and Le Journal secret de Petit Poucet form Philippe Lechermeier) and on the analyses of critical reviews and comments. 400 Blows - film of many faces

The film 400 Blows has been directed by French director Francois Truffaut who belongs to the New Wave, a movement in French cinematography in 1950s. This thesis examines not only the wider context of the author and the New Wave, the creation of the film and its great success at Cannes Film Festival in 1959 (best director). The main focus of the thesis is the analysis of the film's content, focusing on the autobiographical aspects and on the elements of the New Wave in the film as well as on more specific topics, namely childhood, one of the most important topics in Truffat's creation, and the character of Antoine Doinel, portrayed by Jean-Pierre Léaud, who is the hero of four other movies about other phases of his life.
Transgenerational transmission theory in La Vie devant soi by Émile Ajar

9.2 Abstract In this Master's thesis we have attempted to interpret Émile Ajar's novel La Vie devant soi using knowledge based on the psychoanalytic theory of trans-generational transmission. This theory assumes that a person who has been the victim of a traumatic experience cannot consciously refer to it, either through embarrassment or due to the fact that the trauma cannot be referred to verbally. However, he or she can refer to such traumas subconsciously in hints or symbols, precisely because expressing traumas, or their symbolisation in words, is the most effective therapy. If the trauma is not erased, it is transferred further trans-generationally. We consider Émile Ajar's La Vie devant soi to be a suitable work for applying the above- mentioned theory, not only due to the extraordinary life story of the author, but also as concerns the novel itself. Émile Ajar is a pseudonym of the well-known author Romain Gary (born Roman Kacew) who created the character of Émile Ajar in order to write freely regardless of what was expected of Gary as an established author and moreover, a well-known supporter of de Gaulle. As Gary's play on identities was brought to light only after his death, he was the only author to have ever been awarded the Goncourt Prize twice - the second time as Émile Ajar in La Vie devant...

Teaching vocabulary

This thesis presents different points of view on vocabulary. Its aim is to define its role in language teaching. There are four main chapters in the theoretical part: history of methodologies, psychological and neurolinguistic aspects of teaching, fields of vocabulary knowledge and finally stages of vocabulary teaching. The work addresses both the historical development and current tendencies. In the practical part, we first made a didactic analysis of selected textbooks which deal with vocabulary. Furthermore, a selected range of vocabulary (family) was analysed according to the techniques of introducing, semantisation and practicing activities. Several shortcomings were revealed, such as lack of information about the pronunciation, word grammar, register, audio recordings and especially dearth of language skills nowadays often emphasised in Europe. The last part of this work was to create a separate file for teaching the topic of family, so that on the one hand it corresponds to the theoretical knowledge and on the other hand, is based on an analysis of textbooks. Therefore it was possible to demonstrate their applicability to the given range of vocabulary. Resemblance of the heroines of Madame de Lafayette

The diploma thesis deals with a literary creation of Madame de Lafayette, one of the most important French writers, of not only 17th century, and her three novels The Princesse de Clèves, The Princesse de Montpensier and The Comtesse de Tende. The first part of the thesis regards to a social situation in France during the reign of Louis XIV and it also offers the literary-historical insight into this period. The next part devotes to public acceptance of writer's novels both in the period of their publication and in later times. Following chapters deal with the analysis of these novels as far as the main characters and plot are concerned as well as from the linguistic and stylistic point of view. The final part focuses on a phenomenon called paraître, or appearance, which is typical for all three novels and which significantly influences plot as well as psychology of characters.
