Comparison of changes in content of weekly Czechoslovakian television schedule magazine between years 1989 and 1990
Bednařík Štefl, Aneta ; Štoll, Martin (advisor) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)
This thesis compares two selected editions of a programme journal Czechoslovakian Television Weekly, specifically years 1989 and 1990. This journal had been issued between years 1965 and 1990 and used to be one of the main sources of a television programme of the Czechoslovakian Television, which was daily watched in many households. Except for the television programme, the journal also dealt with society-wide questions and this made it even more attractive to readers. As a result there was no shortage of readers, nor viewers of the television. Thanks to the vast popularity among readers as well as a close link to the Czechoslovakian Television, the journal was one of the tools to influence the public opinion. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the level of influence of changing political-economical- social situation in Czechoslovakia to journal editions of years 1989 and 1990. After the theoretical foundations that guide readers to understand examined documents and society-wide circumstances, the thesis identifies sections of the journal that are relevant for the analysis and subsequently in the practical part introduces the analysis of relevant sections of the journal. For each section, there is an analysis of both examined editions of the journal and by comparing them is reached a...

Moreover, the thesis tries to point out the trends taking place in television broadcasting such as digitalization, fragmentation of TV audiences and media convergence. These trends are illustrated by using specific examples from the Czech Television, as well as the theoretical foundation. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on describing public-service media, services they provide and their roles in fulfilling the cultural needs of society. In addition, it also draws attention to examples of culturally oriented channels within Europe. Character of Journalist in the Danish Series Borgen
Krištofíková, Klára ; Štoll, Martin (advisor) ; Novotný, David Jan (referee)
anglicky The aim of the diploma thesis Character of A Journalist in the Danish Series Borgen is to analyze the role and development of the journalist's character in terms of his professional life. At the same time, the aim is to create a representative typology of situations the journalist often gets into. The thesis deals with myths and stereotypes that surround the journalist profession and finds out how are these stereotypes reflected in the audiovisual work. The basis of the analysis and narrative approach is book Narrative as Virtual Reality: Immersion and Interactivity in Literature and Electronic Media by Marie-Laure Ryan. It takes a narrative as a mental image or construct, which consists of a world inhabited by beings who, by their actions, change the world. To create a situation typology the thesis works with set of diagrams. The diagrams visualise relationships and events between the characters. These diagrams are created by a visualisation program that makes it easy to understand the relationships between individual subjects, highlights the repeating situations and the characters at the heart of the action. It also allows more effective analysis through the overal view of the series and their systematic and complete description.
Normalization-era cinematography in Czech current television broadcasting
Jabůrek, Václav ; Štoll, Martin (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
There are lots of studies about normalization cinematography, its content or historical context of its creation. But there was no research about its presence in post-communist television broadcast in the Czech Republic. This work takes a look on five biggest TV channels - ČT1, ČT2, Nova, Prima and Barrandov - in eight chosen years between 1994 and 2015. Content analysis shows, how are Czech televisions dealing with movies and series from communist era, and whether there are any long-term trends connected with this genre. Thanks to the research method, we can see how the usage of those titles has developed up to present. Study also focuses on programmes during weekends and holidays and the amount of normalization movies on these occasions. One part of this work is dealing with communist propaganda and its presence in current broadcast. As Harald Welzer's studies show, old movies are hugely affecting people's understanding of historical events. Therefore, this survey focuses on Czechoslovak movies, which are falsifying modern history such as TV series Thirty Cases of Major Zeman or comedy Bourlive vino. Apart from those cases, less propagandistic movies have also been examined. For example those showing idealized image of normalization society and values of the former regime.

Mašek, Filip ; Štoll, Martin (advisor) ; Hroch, Miloš (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the American singer Marilyn Manson and his reflection in the mass media. Marilyn Manson becomes well-known in the early 90's of the 20th century and soon becomes a leading figure of the global music scene and one of the most controversial products of the American pop culture. His work, loudly criticizing the American society and religion in general, both shocks and entertains the public and causes one of the first major global discourses on the influence of violence and brutal art on the youth. He is accused of encourageing people to illegal actions, drugs and promoting homosexuality and sadism. Mass media are very present in all of Manson's career and that is the main interest of this thesis. The first part chronologically presents the artist's life and career and mentions the biggest controversies, which arose in the context of his work. The second part deals with the Czech media and looks into the trend of how was the public informed about Manson via musical and non-musical periodicals and their online versions since the international breakthrough in 1996 until today. Third part presents the survey on Marilyn Manson and also on the relations of controversy and media in general.
