Traditional technique of embroidery in contemporary art
Tocar, Sofia ; Štefková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Rakušanová, Marie (referee)
The present master's thesis discusses the traditional textile technique of embroidery in the context of contemporary art and analyses the way in which this craft technique has evolved from its invention to this day. The historical development points at the inevitable link between this artistic technique and women's history in Western societies, where embroidery strove to maintain stereotypes on femininity. In the twentieth century, embroidery as well as other textile techniques take on a new, subversive quality which enables the beginning of a social dialogue through art. It becomes a part of the public space in the form of banners in demonstrations or craftivist interventions in city streets. It tries to free itself from stereotypes and become an accessible technique for which the artistic process is as important as the finished piece. The work of contemporary artists reveals the shifting position of textile art, which cannot be considered as a simple offshoot of artistic craftsmanship for it has turned into in an autonomous and widely used medium of expression in current artistic production.

The first part of the text is focused on basic concepts, moreover, it describes the most important exhibitions, theoretical contexts or considerations associated with the concepts of political or engaged art and it includes a brief reference to examples of older socially oriented art of the 20th century. The thesis strives to give a picture of the main themes through which artists reflect on humanity within a current societal system with its various old or new phenomena. The topics and the particular relevant artworks are described in four main chapters that should reveal the working methods or the development of the artists approach or strategies of artistic groups that have simultaneously reflected changes in the Czech art scene for the past 25 years. The prime motives are classical or newborn topics like reflection on motherhood, transformation of the present-day family, attitudes to the phenomenon of age,...

Reflection of the internet in Art and Theory of the 21st Century
Cepáková, Kateřina ; Lahoda, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Štefková, Zuzana (referee)
The purpose of this thesis is to show several examples of how the Internet affected art and theory in the 21st century. We can trace the origins of these changes as far as the 1990s when the Internet became a massively used medium. At that time, the art movement of net.art was born and new media studies were established. This so-called digital avantgarde used the unprecedented possibilities of communication and distribution that the Internet offered and pushed further the boundaries of artistic practice. This avantgarde was followed later by new generations of artists who experimented further with the medium and reflected on it critically. The Internet however changed dramatically many times ever since then - its interface and contents were being more and more influenced by the users. Artists connected to the term post-internet started to translate Internet aesthetics and themes to physical space. They were the first to do that in such a big measure. Currently the Internet has become so banal and transparent that it's difficult to recognise how far its influence on art and the art theory reaches. The second part of this thesis concentrates on concrete examples of theorists and artists whose practice is being influenced by the Internet in greater matter. These examples will show that it's no longer...

Reichelová, Kateřina ; Štěpánová, Irena (referee) ; Štefková, Zuzana (referee)
WOMEN AND THE BRA: QUALITATIVE RESEARCH INTO SOCIOCULTURAL CONTEXTS OF ITS USE - SUMMARY This paper presents the brassiere not just as an essential part of women's clothing which has undergone very interesting evolution, from a strip of cloth or leather covering and forming the breasts, through corsets in various shapes and sizes to the bra in the form as we know today. This rather personal part of women's underwear is also introduced as a phenomenon with many sociocultural and psychosocial aspects. The first part of the paper focuses on different ways of forming and shaping of the bust throughout history, on innovations in textile technology which influenced the look of underwear in general, on the beginnings and evolution of the brassiere and on changes in its functions and symbolism in recent history. The second part describes preparatory work for a modest qualitative study. It presents theoretical and methodological grounds of the study, including an essential introduction of basic principles and characteristics of qualitative research as a specific approach to social reality. How the research, which comprises semi-structured interviews with 21 female participants, is organized and put into practice is delivered further on, in the third chapter. Issues addressed in the interviews include the...
