Reading Literacy of Roma Pupils

Reading Literacy of Roma Pupils Thesis - Kateřina Šormová Abstract This work is a contribution to Roma pupils' literacy research. The importance of literacy for an individual today is absolutely crucial; applied research suggests that people with advanced literacy skills are more likely to have a higher self-esteem, improved health, more satisfying jobs and higher income compared to those with low literacy skills. Persons who are at greater risk of reduced literacy level are those from different cultural backgrounds, unemployed and unskilled people, those with very low level of education and people living in social exclusion. Roma pupils (very often) belong to such groups of people, therefore it is necessary to set up measures to eliminate these risks. The need to develop language competence of Roma pupils in the Czech language, including reading comprehension ability, is also included in the Roma Integration Strategy by 2020. This thesis examines whether and how the reading literacy test results of Roma and non- Roma pupils differ, and describes factors of home and school environment that influence the Roma pupils' literacy development. Feedback in Czech Language Courses for Foreigners

This thesis explores teacher's feedback, its definition, types, and is specifically focused on feedback moves in context of teaching Czech as a foreign language. The aim of this thesis is to present current research on the feedback in the context of teaching a second/foreign language and describe how the feedback is used in Czech language courses for foreigners and what instruments teachers use for such purpose. The first part is focusing on the feedback as part of the educational dialogue and communication in the language classroom; introducing some concepts and hypotheses of second language acquisition in which feedback figures. We also provide a description of feedback, both positive and corrective, and we present current studies concerning feedback within language learning. The empirical part carries out conversational analysis of transcribed recordings of participant observation in Czech courses for foreigners, in which we focus on feedback moves of lecturers. The thesis includes glossary explaining relevant terms translated into Czech. Specifics of communication in kindergarten

(in English): The present bachelor thesis examines basic specifics of communication in kindergarten. The theoretical part of the thesis is devoted to both general and specific communication between a teacher and children. The main focus is on communication functions upon which communication is built. The thesis also offers a basic insight into the Czech preschool education system and briefly presents alternative educational programs with special focus on the program Step by Step practiced in the kindergarten in which data were collected for the practical part of the thesis. The research reported consists of qualitative descriptive analyses of frequently repeated characteristics of the communication between a teacher and children. The conclusion calls for further longitudinal research in this area of communication.
Pathways to Understanding

This paper presents the results of our research. Its aim was to explore the wide field of understanding archaisms or rare expressions by 11 to 15-year-old school-age children. For this purpose, a questionnaire was designed and distributed to several Czech elementary and secondary/high schools owing to the help and co-operation of six local teachers. The data obtained by the questionnaire were qualitatively analyzed and interpreted in terms of the strategies our respondents used to understand the unfamiliar or less familiar words. The issue of reading comprehension was also touched upon. At the same time, quantitative aspects of the relation between the level of understanding and certain variables, namely the age and gender of the respondents, were revealed.
The Identity of Czech Deaf Roma

With the definition of Deaf people as a cultural and linguistic minority the research of Deaf identity became possible. Following this, questions of identity of minority deaf persons emerged. Do these persons affiliate to the Deaf community or to their ethnic minority? This bachelor thesis focuses on the topic of Czech deaf Roma identity. The underlying assumption of the paper is that identity is a continuing process dependent on the interaction of an individual and society and that it constitutes of various levels different form each other. The research the thesis is based on aimed to collect data about experience, opinions and attitudes of deaf Roma. In analyzing the collected data, the process of identity development in these individuals was explored. Deaf community and Deaf culture is described from different perspectives and the results of present research of deaf minority members is summarized in this thesis.

The aim is to assess how satisfied fiscal and socio-economic objectives of tax reform in 2008 in the Czech republic. The first chapter focuses on tax reform and tax theory. The second chapter presents a tax reform proposal to set targets. The third chapter focuses on the evaluation of the objectives set.
