The Soldiers of the Kaiser. Identities, Experiences and National Awareness of Czech Participants of the First World War The topics of presented dissertation are identities and experiences of Czech soldiers of the First World War. The sources of the dissertation are ego-documents of Czech soldiers, in particular mostly their diaries, in lesser extent also pieces of field correspondence and memoirs. The aim of the dissertation is the analysis of representations of identities, experiences and national awareness of authors of analysed sources. The research questions of the dissertation inquire about representations of constructions of identities in the sources, particularly about national, regional, religious or social identities; about construction of the otherness and depiction of the enemy in texts, about relation to the otherness and potential conflict of loyalties to the Czech national society and to service in the Austro-Hungarian army; about their gender identity; and about the question of construction of corporeality and experience of corporeality and the body as the construct of masculine identity. The presented dissertation belongs to the discipline Historical Anthropology.

Jews in Polná in first half of the 20th century

Annotation: This bachelor thesis deals with the issue of the Jewish population in the town of Polná. It pays the most attention to the interwar period, but marginally focuses on the period during both world wars. The work deals with both the daily life of the Jewish community and more general contexts. The work is based on the testimony of witnesses who were not themselves members of the Jewish community, but were connected by personal ties with the Jews, so their destinies were very directly influenced and affected. Very marginally, the work also deals with the post-war period. The main goal of this bachelor's thesis is a comprehensive presentation of information about the Jewish community in Polná in a specified period of time. Another ambition of the work is to contribute to the local bibliography on the topic and to raise awareness of this issue. Due to the current situation where the coronavirus pandemic complicates access to information and resources, the work is mostly based on the literature and edited sources.

Torwads new man! Social experiment in Post-war Czechoslovakia demonstrated in the example of Emil Zátopek.

In this diploma thesis I deal with the concept of a new socialist man in Czechoslovakia between 1948 and 1956 on the example of Emil Zátopek. The aim was to analyze the form of the new socialist man on the example of selected fiction, newspaper articles, visual, audio and archival material, taking into account the person of Emil Zátopek. The research was conducted using methods of discursive analysis. I approached the concept of the new socialist man as a social construct. Research has shown that the image of the new socialist man was dynamic and was misused by communist ideologues to create images of ideal citizens and emphasize the negative qualities of external and internal enemies. Exceptional personalities, such as Emil Zátopek, were shown by period propaganda as ideal citizens who were a harbinger of a new world. Zátopek's period image consists of two forms that intertwined with each other. Their combination enabled the communist propagandists to present Zátopek as a new socialist man, yet an ordinary citizen. The diploma thesis is divided into three chapters, which refer to each other. The chapters were conceived according to the image of Zátopek in contemporary propaganda.

Allied relations of the Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia between 1918--1938. On the example of the 48th I. R. "Yugoslavia" celebrations.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the relationships between allied nations Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia in years 1918 and 1938 from the perspective of selected commemorative acts. The main aim of this thesis is to define the role of the 48th Infantry Regiment in these celebrations. This Thesis is based on the hypothesis that through its honorary title "Jugoslavia" was created symbolic function of the regiment, which was strengthened mutual friendly relationships between Czechoslovakia and the Kingdom of SHS. My thesis statement is not chronologically limited on the years 1918 and 1938 because the "seed" was planted before the founding of the independent countries. The thesis examines relationships between Czechs and South Slavs before and during 1st World War, focusing on the relationships and short history of 102nd Infantry Regiment "Potiorek", which has been precursor of the 48th Infantry Regiment "Jugoslavia". Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The author deals with the institution of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier / Warrior in historical borders of Czech Republic. It focuses on its centuries-old development, its influences on creating national identity and its uses as a tool for a political campaign. First part of the thesis deals the period until 1938. The second part follows the development of the institution during World War II and its transformation after 1948. The final part maps the last decade of its reconstruction and its advantages to contemporary society with an aim for the teenage generation and last but not least as a place of tradition and bounds with current Army of the Czech Republic. This thesis works with available archive materials of the Central Military Archives in Prague, National Archives of the National Museum, period press, proceedings and monographs related to the National Memorial in Vítkov. Training and Operations of Officers of the Intelligence department of the General staff in Vienna in 1955-1989

The presented bachelor's thesis focuses on the under-researched topic of Vienna's intelligence department (residency, rezidentura) from the 1950s to the 1980s of twentieth century. On the basis of archival materials author analyses specialization of the residency, work experience of ZS/GŠ intelligence officers and their training for operation /operating/ in foreign countries. The bachelor's thesis also examines the sylabus of secret services training course and preparation of ZS/GŠ personnel for their work in residency. On the example of particular intelligence officer author tries to ilustrate the life of individual in the frame of army intelligence structure and team of intelligence officers of Vienna residency both in "peaceful" period of 1950s and critical period after 1968. The thesis is especially based on heuristics of archival sources of the Security Services Archive (Archiv bezpečnostních složek, ABS) and accesible monographies, memories and studies. Anglo-American culture and Czech society 1918-1938

The Diploma Thesis deals with an influence of Anglo-American culture upon Czech society in 1918- 1938. The main focus is dedicated to the Czech intellectual environment, which has accepted Anglo- American culture and spread it among general public. An importance of T. G. Masaryk to introduction of English philosophy at the Czech philosophical faculty is shown here as well as his support of Anglo- American culture in the time of establishing the Czechoslovakia. Famous Czech author K. Čapek is presented as an admirer of American pragmatism and his further relationship towards American culture is also shown here. A part of thesis deals with Čapek's well known travelogue called Anglické listy. Except of famous personalities, the importance of English department at Prague faculty of arts is also taken into account. The department was lead by the founder of Czech English studies Vilém Mathesius, whose linguistic and cultural studies are also presented here. The last part of thesis is dedicated to introduction of compulsory English language classes into secondary schools and to analysis of curriculum and text books.

"Old Maid": Czech Society and the Honour Shield of the Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia

Presented diploma thesis focuses on research and analysis of the only decoration founded in the name of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. It is not only focusing on the timeframe of the Second World War, but it also tracks the phenomenon of civil decorations and medals across entire modern Czech history. The main research question is following: why was not the preceding First Czechoslovak Republic creating similar institutions and why after 1945, or more precisely 1948, the time has come to create enormous inflation of them. The main aim of the thesis is to define the Honour Shield of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia as probably the very first civil decoration of modern Czech history. The thesis is not only focusing on the period of the occupation (1944-45), when the decoration was distributed. It also concentrates in detail on the previous thinking of the Nazi occupation authorities, which then resulted in founding of the decoration, together with the postwar retribution, with which were the awarded people confronted after 1945. The thesis is modifying so far common purely phaleristical approach to the topic, which it is supplementing with wider context. Military history in interwar Czechoslovakia

1 Annotation This work tries to tackle concept of history of knowledge and possibilities of its application for study of history of military historiography. With the use of this concept, the work will analyse processes of organisation, creations and spread of military historiography in interwar Czechoslovakia. It tries to come to terms with historiographical definition of military history but also its contextualisation considering history of knowledge and sociocultural factors describing the relationship of warfare and society. The work attempts it on the example of main, institutional centres of knowledge management of military history in first Czechoslovak republic. 2
