Sight translation - double transfer

In this thesis we addressed the subject of sight translation. This special type of interpreting is often not given adequate academic attention even though it can be considered one of the most difficult exercises due to its dichotomic character. Sight translation is not mere transfer from one language to another, it is also transfer from written mode to oral mode. The most important characteristics, as well as the largest area of differentiation, of written and oral texts is syntax. Therefore, we centred our research on this issue. Our research is qualitative, with no hypothesis. We merely describe the situation in sight translation from English into Czech. We chose non-participant observation as the method of our research, thus decreasing the number of variables. The observation took place from January 2006 to September 2007 during State Final Exams at the Department of Translation Studies of the Charles University in Prague. All students specialized in interpreting. The empirical material consists of 13 original texts, 13 interpreters' renditions and 4 official translations that were available on official websites of the relevant institutions. Self-assessment and peer assessment in interpreter self-training

The theoretical-empirical thesis deals with the importance of self-assessment and peer assessment for interpreter self-training. The first part is focused on the theoretical foundations of the thesis. First, the thesis covers the question of interpreting quality, its definition, and the assessment of interpreting in interpreter training. The thesis then presents the expertise theory, both in general and in the field of interpreting studies specifically, and provides recommendations by several theoreticians as to how to apply this theory in interpreter training. The next chapter clarifies certain concepts from learning theory that often appear in literature on interpreting didactics. The theoretical part concludes with a presentation of two types of tools that can be used in interpreter self-training, namely e-learning tools and reflective diaries. The empirical part then analyses data collected in two pieces of research. The first of these is a questionnaire research that aims to map the self-training habits of MA interpreting students at the Institute of Translation Studies, Faculty of Arts, Charles University, and to find out whether the students, while self-training, act in line with the expertise theory. Creativity in simultaneous interpreting

This work deals with creativity in simultaneous interpreting. It regroups knowledge about the creativity in different fields, mainly in psychology, and presents the actual state of the research of creativity in translatology. It brings out the similarity of interpreting with improvisation and art, which are both highly creative. On the basis of the existing models of process of interpreting, it proposes an empirical study of the product of interpreting, using language transformations, with the aim to prove that simultaneous interpreting is a creative activity on more levels (lexical, syntactical and semantic). This experiment was not convincing on a lexical level, but in general it helped to confirm that interpreters are creative during simultaneous interpreting.

V této práci se zabýváme kulturními aspekty, které mohou ovlivnit výkon při konsekutivním tlumočení, konkrétně reáliemi každodenního života. V teoretické části nejprve definujeme pojem kultura ve vztahu k translatologii. Mezi různými kulturami existují větší či menší rozdíly a chápání světa a skutečnosti se podle příslušníků různých kulturních společenství liší. Je úlohou překladatele, aby tyto rozdíly překlenul a umožnil mezi osobami úspěšnou komunikaci. Aby svému úkolu dostál, má k dispozici určité množství překladatelských postupů, které však musí volit obezřetně a s ohledem na znalosti a očekávání adresátů. Úloha tlumočníka je o to těžší, že na volbu adekvátního řešení nemá příliš času. Konsekutivní tlumočník má sice možnost požádat řečníka o upřesnění, nemůže si však na rozdíl od překladatele danou reálii dohledat. Práce se věnuje ověření pracovní hypotézy, podle které se profesionální tlumočníci díky bohatším zkušenostem z oblasti tlumočení dopustí méně chyb a vynechávek a ze strategií častěji použijí ekvivalenci nebo vysvětlení, zatímco studenti častěji převedou reálii jako takovou (pomocí transference nebo doslovného překladu) i v případech, kdy tato reálie jako taková v přijímající kultuře neexistuje. Hypotéza se vztahuje na tlumočení v obou směrech. V empirické části popisujeme
Spoken and Sign Language Interpreter Training in the Czech Republic and Austria

The thesis focuses on possibilities of spoken and sign language interpreter training in the Czech Republic and Austria. The theoretical part describes the situation of the deaf in the Czech Republic and in Austria and explains the terms connected with communication of the deaf. Furthermore, it contains a brief overview of the history of spoken and sign language interpreter training and a description of the conditions for interpreters in both countries respectively. The most detailed chapters of the theoretical part deal with training institutions for spoken and sign language interpreters. The main focus is on the Institute of Translation studies at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague and the Department of Translation Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of University of Graz. The empirical part presents the results of a questionnaire survey conducted among Master students of the two institutes who evaluated how well the university prepares them for their future career.
Telephone Intepreting in a Large Global Company

This diploma thesis is an empirical study outlying how telephone interpretation is used in a large global company. The theoretical section provides a comprehensive insight into telephone interpretation, covering its history and presence, describing various settings in which it is used and pointing out its specifics. It tackles issues of quality and reports on contentious approaches of various scholars and professionals. The practical section describes how the company Ariba uses telephone interpretation in order to facilitate communication with its customers. Analyzing 73 authentic telephone calls from this company, the author investigates English-French, English-German and English-Spanish telephone interpretation and verifies five hypotheses pertaining to it, namely the use of the 3rd person singular, audio quality, stability of connection, situational context and customer satisfaction.
Ingrid Kurz and her Contribution to the Development of

The MA thesis Ingrid Kurz and her Contribution to the Development of the Theory of Interpreting is a descriptive theoretical study dealing with the work of the conference and television interpreter, Interpreting Studies scholar and professor of Translation Studies at University of Vienna Ingrid Kurz, born Pinter. This thesis analyses individual stages of her research and looks into the development of her opinions and interests, which can be followed chronologically in her articles, studies and extensive publications. It also informs on teaching and interpreting projects of this researcher and, last but not least, reflects her contribution in the area of interdisciplinary cooperation. The interconnection of psychological and interpreting education inspired her towards the first experiments in the field of simultaneous interpreting. Interpreter's strategy for simultaneous interpreting into the mother tongue and into the B language

Malkovská, Alžběta: Interpreter's strategy for simultaneous interpreting into the mother tongue and into the B language, ÚTRL FF UK 2012, p. 149, supervisor: Prof. PhDr. Ivana Čeňková, Csc. This thesis focuses on the topic of the KISS strategy ("Keep it short and simple") as a hypothetical ideal solution for simultaneous interpreting into the active language. The purpose of this theoretical and empirical study is to describe the issue of interpreting into the active language (B language) and the strategies used in simultaneous interpreting, with emphasis on the KISS strategy. The paper is divided into two parts: theoretical part and empirical part. In the theoretical part, we set up the working hypothesis that we will confirm or disprove in the empirical part. We suppose that the KISS strategy is the ideal and predominant mechanism used for interpreting into the B language. The first chapter is devoted to interpreting into the B language focused from different perspectives. Time lag in simultaneous interpretation from English into Czech and its dependence on text type

The aim of this M.A. thesis was to prove the correlation between text type and time lag in simultaneous interpretation. Two text types were examined: a prepared speech read out by the speaker, and a spontaneous speech, not prepared in written form beforehand. The thesis is based on an experiment examining variations in time lag in simultaneous interpreting from English into Czech. Twelve students and recent graduates of interpreting at the Institute of Translation Studies, Faculty of Philosophy and Arts, Charles University in Prague, took part in the experiment. The interpreters' outputs were recorded on audiocassettes, then burned on CDs and processed with the help of specialized computer software (Cool Edit). The results were then evaluated, summed up in charts, analyzed, processed graphically, commented on and computed statistically. The results presented in the empirical part of the thesis were then tested against a hypothesis assuming a shorter time lag in interpreting the prepared read text. This hypothesis was confirmed. The results gained in the experiment showed there is a correlation between text type and time lag in simultaneous interpretation, with a statistically significant difference in time lag between the two types of speech.
