Ethnic Identity and conflict (on the Example of Multiethnic Territory of Cruise Ships)
Medvecká, Zuzana ; Skupnik, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee) ; Kobes, Tomáš (referee)
In my doctoral thesis, which I have elaborated on the basis of my diploma thesis Doubled Identity of Crew Members on Cruise Ships as the Instrument of Cultural Adaptation, supervised by Mgr. Helena Tužinská, PhD., I have analysed the way of life of crew members sharing the multiethnical territory of cruise ships. Crew members working there come from over 50 different countries. In spite of their different origins and cultures which have been forming their behaviour and way of thinking, they share small space without any conflicts. My goal is to sum up the basic conditions which should be met in any multiethnical society to ensure that there would not be any conflicts between its habitants. According to my hypothesis there is a need of other than ethnical identity which could unify them on other than ethnical basis. In the territory of cruise ships it is the socio-professional identity of 'crew member '. I found out that there are two main factors responsible for successful co-existence of people from different cultures here - communication and the system of values. That is why from all factors in which we can observe socio-professional identity of crew members I preferably analyse rules and norms established by crew members and lingua franca used on cruise ships called 'ship language'. The specific...
Anna Bayer's activities among the muslim women of Bosnia at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, in comparasion with the work of the Czech medical workers in muslim countries at the beginning of 21st century
Merklová, Nikola ; Uherek, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Matějů, Martin (referee)
The thesis strives to map out and shed a light upon the circumstances of the first Czech dostress's (Anna Bayer's) pioneer activities in Bosnia at the turn of the 20th Century. Being a doctor-female, for Anna Bayer it was her contact with her Muslim female patients that had given her the opportunity to learn about the life of the Bosnian Muslim society of that time. By searching for para/lel between Bayer's activities in the past and the activities of the Czech medical workers in today's Muslim countries of Iraq and Afghanistan, the thesis aims to emphasize the importance of our female doctors in cultures remotely distant to us, cultures, which have been build upon strong patriarchate tradition. The experience of these medical workers today underlines and praises the pioneer role of one of the first such women, Anna Bayer.

Gated communities and residential separation in Prague
Brabec, Tomáš ; Sýkora, Luděk (advisor) ; Ira, Vladimír (referee) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee)
The thesis focuses on gated communities (GCs) as an example of residential separation in today's Prague. The GCs are a new specific phenomenon characterising the society in present post-industrial cities. It is a type of residence where high social status population concentrates behind walls and fences. The number of GCs grows more or less globally which results in increased experts' interest in GCs. This type of residence occurs also in Czechia, primarily in Prague. Experts' interest in the subject in our environment is, however, not as high as in other post-communist countries. This thesis follows up with previous studies and assesses in detail if - in context of the post-industrial transformation - the high social status population is separated in Prague GCs and why such type of residence appears. The document also partly focuses on the development and situation of residential separation and the consequences of GCs formation. It is based on several quantitative (data analysis, questionnaire survey) and qualitative (interviews) research methods. It turns up that on one hand the level of residential segregation and separation in Prague decreases, on the other hand we can see that the number of specific separated locations such as the GCs where the high social status population concentrates grows....

The tbesis is foeused on sa!ient features of a eonerete loea! eulture, a village ea!led ''Nové Sady", whieh is situated in the region of "Žďár nad Sázavou". The work is eoneemed with theoretie and empiriea! ana!yses of symbols, eultural themes and eategories. The general eoneeption results from the presumption of uniqueness of the eultures. It is assumed that speei:fie views of the world exist within tbe frames of partieular loea! eultures. The eharaeteristie features are expressed in such eultura! eategories as pereeption of a territory and the way of understanding the f1ight oftime. It is likely to be impossible to rea!ize the phenomena by the means of "objeetive" researeh. As a result of this, tbe thesis gives atlention to a "subjeetive" point of view. The unique way of understanding the universe and the symbol s of the Ioea! eulture are taken down. Tbe thesis is divided into three parts: Territory, Time and People. Cultural identity of Czech emigration in the USA
Smyslem této práce nebylo ani cokoli vyčítat anebo chválit, ani dávat soudy, kdo měl emigraci těžší a kdo lépe uspěl.
Not so "Traditional" Healing: Constructions of Illness Reality and Spirit Possession in a Rapidly Changing Society in Venda, South Africa
Řezáčová, Vendula ; Kandert, Josef (advisor) ; Kotalova, Jitka (referee) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee)
The present thesis "Not so 'Traditional' Healing: Constructions of Illness Reality and Spirit Possession in a Rapidly Changing Society in Venda, South Africa" aims to analyze socio-cultural and political aspects of 'traditional' healing which had been the focus of fieldwork of the author in 'Venda', South Africa (in the period between 2004-6). In the first section of the thesis the author has shown that the medical concepts and symbols marked as 'traditional' have not formed a closed, time-less system. On the contrary, they have reflected and shaped far-reaching socio-cultural changes in the post-apartheid dispensation characterised by the neo-liberal market reforms, congealing of socio-economic inequalities, transformations of gender identities and the politics of 'tradition' and identity. 'Traditional healing' has thus been constituted through a constant process of (re)invention of symbols and practices which have referred to the 'Venda past' while aiming to delineate boundaries of 'tradition' in relation to biomedicine. The second section of the thesis has focussed on the phenomenon of ancestor spirit possession which has also constituted the means through which 'traditional' healers have been recruited and their claims to knowledge and healing power have been legitimized. In contrast to the...

This thesis is focused on the processes of motivation, selection and socialization of the media employees in Czech Television News as well as on the social structure, norms and values within the organization. The special attention is given to the people who are working as journalists. Those people - TV journalists - are the most important group of employees in every television news, others are cameramen, editors, producers or technicians. The journallists have special privileges. They are the only real decision makers and gate keepers and they are in fact creating the face of the news. The most important thing is that they are the only group of employees, who can enter the TV screen. The act of entering the TV screen is very atractive for the adepts of TV career. It gives them the oportunity of being exposed to millions of TV viewers and become somewhat more special and more famous than any "normal" person. Because of this reward of being a little bit famous, the TV journalist are often able to stand a strong pressure of time stress and relationships, which are full of rivalry. The organization has a strong pervasive effect on the individuals, who are often ready to give most of their lives to it. They consider their work very important and give much more attention to the content of TV broadcasting than any...
Revitalisating the city - interaction of the municipality and the citizens
Czastka, Sven ; Uherek, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Pargač, Jan (referee)
Current development in those European cities affected by its post-industrial history is designated as revitalisation. However, since many years this process has taken place in Western Europe and in the United States of America, in Czech towns has been this phenomenon quite new. Revitalisation or city revival is a complicated action encompassing different stakeholders, oscillating consecutively between construction of buildings and regeneration of citizens and their local identification. In this diploma thesis I focused on an interaction between main participants in the capital city o Usti Region - the City of Ústí nad Labem. I have identified the city administration, the city council and the civic associations and clubs as main city players. The aim of this diploma thesis was to determine the notion of revitalization and possible connotations of its usage related to cities and a concrete application in Ústí nad Labem. Furthermore to describe relations and acting of the city administration, the city council and the associations and clubs as stakeholders in the process of revitalisation. In the conclusion of this thesis I offered a few suggestions for possible more beneficent cooperation of both sides. In the course of participated observation and from the results of the inquiry has come out, that in Ústí nad...
