Sládek, Miloš ; Royt, Jan (advisor) ; Med, Jaroslav (referee) ; Svatoš, Martin (referee)
Individually Published Czech Festive and Occasional Preachings of the End of the 17th and the First Two Thirds of the 18th Century Miloš Sládek The thesis concentrates on the area of festive and occasional homiletics in Bohemia after the Battle of White Mountain. Since the end of the 17th century, homiletics had represented the Czech leading literary genre with extraordinary influence on the masses. This influence was even strenghtened when printed preachings gradually became popular reading. The main focus of the thesis is on the questions of preparation of preaching, problematics of preaching handbooks, relationship of a preacher and his listeners, as well as the area of Classicist and conceptual preaching. The Baroque concept is described in connections with the aspect of growing author's self-esteem at that time. Editions of chosen sixteen preachings with introductions are added to demonstrate (or relativise) the conclusions of the first part of the thesis. Festive preaching in Bohemia was essentially influenced by legends, German Catholic preaching and myths and folk-tales. Emphasis on Christian morality is typical for Sunday preaching, however, it also appears in festive preachings. The influence of festive and occasional preaching of the end of the 17th and the first half of the 18th century on...
Marian devotion in Bohemia after the Battle of White Mountain: example of the work of J. I. Dlouhoveský
Smyčková, Kateřina ; Zdichynec, Jan (advisor) ; Sládek, Miloš (referee)
This thesis engages in the Marian cult in Bohemia in the second half of the 17th century. The first, general part is the characteristic of the Marian devotion with the secondary literature, followed by a chapter on Czech prints with the Marian theme (1650-1750). The base of the thesis is the analysis of the work of J. I. Dlouhoveský (1638-1701). The analysis focuses on some forms of the Marian cult: pilgrimage, cult of saints (especially of Bohemian patrons), Marian devotion in the Habsburg dynasty and a folk piety. The last chapter deals with the literary self-presentation of Dlouhoveský (example of the Marian devotee). The appendix consists of the inventory of all works of Dlouhoveský, and of the graphs that summarize information about the Marian prints (1650-1750).
Comparison of Kronika česká by Václav Hájek z Libočan and Poselkyně starých příběhů českých by Jan František Beckovský
Koucká, Vladimíra ; Sládek, Miloš (advisor) ; Havelka, Tomáš (referee)
This thesis compares two chronicles - Kronika česká by Václav Hájek z Libočan and first part of Poselkyně starých příběhů českých by Jan František Beckovský. The comparison showed that both texts (especially in the second part) are very different in their content and manner of processing. Chroniclers supported their narration by many sources of different nature. J. F. Beckovský corrected Hajek's errors, if he had other sources. He interspersed his chronicle with number of documents and own experience he gained while traveling. The authors differ mainly in the content of chronicles. J. F. Beckovský deleted almost all the messages that relate to events abroad and retains only those that are linked to events in the Czech Kingdom. Further differences can be seen in the concept of historical figures, such as Boleslav I., Jan Hus or Jiří z Poděbrad. At the ideological site V. Hájek accented against-town and catholic tendencies. These tendencies are not confirmed in my research. V. Hájek opposes all those who (according to him) disturb peace in the country - against the Germans, Jews and Lutheran priests. Furtermore, in conjunction with these chronicles commonly talked about their Catholic spirit and hatred and anti-Hussite attitude. However V. Hájek assumed an attitude to Jan Hus and Jeroným quite...

Georg Barthold Pontanus of Breitenberg and his funeral orations as a historical source
Daňková, Tereza ; Hojda, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Sládek, Miloš (referee)
Funeral orations, as a literary genre on the boundary between written and verbal communication, experienced a resurrection in the Czech Republic during the 1990s as part of a reawakening of interest in Czech Baroque literature and culture and associated literary genres pertaining to the subject of death. In seeking the origins of this literary form one must go much farther back than the beginning of the modern era. Literary tributes to the dead have deep roots in European culture, originating already during ancient times. The textual construction of funeral orations in the early modern era was based on the classical form known from the ancient orators Menander and Dionysius of Halicarnassus. During the period around 1500 the development of this homiletic genre was influenced by two factors. The first was the invention of printing, which already in the late fifteenth century led to publication and dissemination of speeches, and thus of course to a rise in their level of dignity and their didactic function. At the same time, with the arrival of the Lutheran reformation came a new manner of perceiving life after death, the fundamental change lying in a different conception of salvation, purgatory, and the associated activities of those surviving the deceased. The purpose of this study is above all to...
Holy curiosity of Štěpán František Náchodský
Ludvíková, Kristýna ; Sládek, Miloš (referee) ; Havelka, Tomáš (advisor)
Postila Svatá všetečnost is a very remarkable piece of work of a no less remarkable author, Štěpán František Náchodský. The Postila, a set of homilies for every Sunday of the liturgical year, took its form in the Early Modern Age which saw a renaissance in the Catholic Church and a great rise of homiletics. Nevertheless, this period has lost much of its splendour in the course of history and has even been marked as decadent due to erroneous interpretations. The usage of inappropriate methods of researchers at the end of the 19th century has led to a distorted view and a certain degradation of results. Through this work, I aim to contribute a small part to the gradual illumination of a period long denoted as the "Dark Age," which has thus been dispraised subjectively. Many works of undeniable artistic and expressive value were being left out by both specialists and the public. Nowadays, strong efforts are taking shape to judge Baroque period objectively. Among the works unrighteously neglected is the Postila Svatá všetečnost by Štěpán František Náchodský, an author whose contradictory character surely deserves close attention. Veiled in many obscurities, his personal life is in sharp contrast with the spirit of the compilation. The author and his work hence create a bizarre combination, which nonetheless...
The Education of Childern and Parents in The Broadside Ballads and Sermons of The Early Modern Period
Baloghová, Eliška ; Havelka, Tomáš (referee) ; Sládek, Miloš (advisor)
The thesis is focused on the questions of education of children and their parents by the broadside ballads and sermons in the time after the battle of "Bílá hora" (after the year 1620). It examines the way in which the ideal relationship of children and parents is presented, by whom or what are the relationships influenced and of what importance is God in the families and lives of the early modern people. The thesis describes the similarities and differences of the stated genres in both content and form. Through study and analysis of sources, the thesis attempts to describe two aspects of education: how the proper education should proceed and how the authors of broadside ballads and sermons try to influence and educate both the children and their parents. It describes the means of both genres and possible influences on the community. Other subjects dealt with in the thesis are: the children's and parents' misdeeds and punishment, women's status, the most common "exempla" (examples provided in sermons) and the most frequent rhetorical and linguistic means appearing in the discussed literary works.
Motifs of Death in Baroque Poetry and their Overlapping
Janečková, Vendula ; Havelka, Tomáš (advisor) ; Sládek, Miloš (referee)
Moje diplomová práce nese název Motivy smrti v barokní poezii, s podtitulem Interpretace motivu smrti a zmaru ve vybraných dílech barokní literatury.
