Perun. History and typology of the Slavic thunderer
Téra, Michal ; Svatoň, Vladimír (advisor) ; Sláma, Jiří (referee) ; Podolinská, Tatiana (referee)
The goal of this study of Perun is to systemize the existing knowledge of the given issue, to introduce the main sources, important theories and to attempt to find traces of the Slavic thunderer's cult in the folk culture of the Slavic nations. The study is divided into two parts: Perun's History and Perun's Typology. In part one there are main written sources about Perun, etymology of his theonym, traces of his cult with the Slavs of the Central Europe and the Balkans and the portrait of the Old Russian heathenism. The second part presents profiles of Indo-European thunderers, the main attributes of the Slavic thunderer, the transformations of Perun into figures of Slavic folklore and the main theories concerning Perun's role in Slavic archaic religion which have appeared over the past forty years. The chapter on sources contains texts dating back to the times of Kievan Rus - the only texts of the Early Middle Ages referring to Perun. Next, there are early modern age sources from Poland from which some errors concernig Perun's cult arose. The chapter on etymology proves the Indo-European root from which Perun's name was derived and its semantic extent which is connected with the thunderers' cult in the traditions of many Indo- European nations. The chapter which seeks traces of thunderer's cult with the...
Early medieval settlement in Kolín region
The acropolis of the hillfort in Libice on Cidlina, its character, structure and dating
Tomanová, Pavla ; Sláma, Jiří (advisor) ; Štefan, Ivo (referee)
The B.A. thesis deals with the issue of settlement development on the acropolis of the Early Medieval hillfort at Libice nad Cidlinou. Main part of the work consists of analysis and evaluation of the "trench S" that was excavated in the year 1950, and whose results have not yet been analyzed in detail. Essential part of this work is dedicated to analysis of the colection of finds and to methodology of processing the data obtained during this old archaeological excavations. On the basis of the analysis results, taking the latest results of non-destructive research into consideration, this thesis opens discusion regarding the theories of Rudolf Turek concerning the settlement development of the acropolis. So far, Turek's theories have not been discussed in detail. In its close, this B.A. thesis is supplemented with comparative overview of settlement areals and their forms attested both on Czech- and Great Moravian hillforts that share similar characteristics with the hilfort at Libice nad Cidlinou.
The early mediaeval fortifications with a frontal stone mantle in Central Europe
Kos, Luděk ; Štefan, Ivo (referee) ; Sláma, Jiří (advisor)
The presented work deals with the fortification with a frontal stone mantle in the area of Central Europe. It summarizes the current state of research with regard to the extension of the phenomenon, construction knowledge and chronological and cultural aspects. It also treats of some methodological problems in study of fortifications. The type in question was widely used in the Early Middle Ages in the Frankish area as well as in the Slavic one, the construction differences of the fortifications with a dry laid stone wall represent various manners of their usage reflecting territorial traditions. The Frankish origin of this fortification type is probable based on chronological reasons, historically attested contacts and influences on other parts of Slavic architecture and the lifestyle of the elite.

Archeological coin finds, deniers and their contribution to understanding of the Czech history
Polanský, Luboš ; Sláma, Jiří (advisor) ; Sommer, Petr (referee)
The study is dedicated to the particular selected examples where the coin finds - their archaeological context and numismatic analysis respectively - bring new data helping in completion and precision of our knowledge of the early medieval Bohemian history. The study is divided into three chapters covering the whole period of production of the deniers, i.e. the 10th, 11th, and 12th century with their special problems. Such analysis characterizes processing and interpretation of the archaeological material in the particular periods, and it also clearly shows which results (such as chronological classification) can be reached via detailed processing of the finds (hoards). The first chapter The Bohemian deniers of the 10th century in light of revision of the finds is focused on selected results got from research covered by the grant project, from detailed analysis of the material respectively. There are three subchapters gradually dealing with problems of the Slavníkid coinage, mint organization (the Vyšehrad case) and the mint-masters, plus characteristics of some important centers of the Přemyslid state based on the particular coin finds. The second chapter Jaromír, Oldřich and overcoming of the crisis after 1000 AD analyses problems of the coinage of the first half of the 11th century with respect to the...
Significance of detection of human papillomaviruses in draining lymph nodes in cervical cancer paients
Sláma, Jiří ; Dundr, Pavel (advisor) ; Svoboda, Bohuslav (referee) ; Špaček, Jiří (referee)
Background: Metastatic involvement of pelvic nodes is the most important prognostic parameter in early-stage cervical cancer. Still, approximately 15% of patients with negative pelvic nodes experience recurrence, majority of them in the pelvis. The presence of HPV DNA in histology-negative pelvic nodes is considered a subclinical metastatic spread. Methods: Patients with early-stage cervical cancer referred for surgical treatment were enrolled in the study. Cytobrush technique was used for sample collection from the fresh tissue to avoid any loss of material for histology. Results: Altogether, 49 patients were enrolled in the study. High-risk (HR) HPV was identified in the tumor in 91.8% patients, and in the sentinel node or other pelvic nodes in 49.9% patients. Among the 10 HR HPV genotypes detected, HPV 16 was the most frequently represented in both the tumor and the lymph nodes (66.7% and 71.4%, respectively). All metastatic lymph nodes were HPV positive. Conclusion: The presence of HR HPV DNA in a sentinel node had a positive predictive value for metastatic involvement of pelvic lymph nodes in our study. This could be considered a sign of an early subclinical metastatic spread; however, the prognostic value has to be evaluated through a longer follow-up.
The younger Great Moravian phase in Mikulčice and a question of its understanding by means of study of ceramic groups
Mazuch, Marian ; Sláma, Jiří (advisor) ; Wachowski, Krysztof (referee) ; Poláček, Lumír (referee)
The current state of archaeological research on Great Moravia can, with a bit of exaggeration, be described as archaeology of two faces. The archaeology of cemeteries and the archaeology of settlement situations in power centres of the Great Moravian state. This seemingly provocative division may symbolize a kind of dualism, represented in two levels. In part, there are naturally two completely different worlds in the sphere of the living and of the dead, but there is also the archaeological difference - in the representation of material culture. We find just a few objects that these two worlds have in common (with the exception of those either with functional and formative perfection or, on the contrary, with simplicity, that, at least till this time, cannot typologically be distinguished, such as knives or spindle whorls), or more precisely these common points are very rarely monitored and evaluated in settlement contexts. In my opinion, this fact can be of crucial importance while trying to create a general chronology of the period in question. Archaeological evaluations of cemeteries, according to my knowledge, can be considered to be truly archaeological only if carried out on the basis of a stratigraphic analysis and, in the first phase, at least with the elaboration of some relative chronological...
Early medieval fortified settlement in Praha - Butovice
